As OZ indicated, you must check it level and warm as oil expands greatly. Once you know your reading is on the full mark, then check it cold and mark the dipstick.
My owners manual says to warm it up.....and let it sit for 20 minutes. This is about the stupidest setup I have ever seen. They should have it so you can check it before you start the engine (cold). Makes it kinda hard to check it when you change the oil.
Yea you gotta let it sit, itll always show oil after being driven, gotta let the oil settle back down then check it, so the first time u checked it in the street that was prolly the correct reading with barely anything on it
O.K. So if one pulls their dipstick and finds no oil level, the correct procedure is to start and drive the vehicle? I doubt ARod would recommend that....
Agreed, sounds stupid to me too. Say you don't have enough oil in there, and you drive it around first? Or go ahead and add all 13 quarts, so when you get back in check it, you have to drain some out becuase its above the "full" line.
Owner’s manual says to let it set for 15 minutes before checking. Allow for drain back..

Yep. If you crank and check cold it takes forever for the oil to drain back to the pan.
