- The free bike challenge - part 30 - insane bike park sends! I visit Phoenix cycle works MTB trails bike park and ride the sickest jumps ever on an old free hard tail mountain bike with horn handlebars, but how long will it last?
I return to this crazy bike park to find that they have a whole new side filled with incredible dirt jumps and fast flowing MTB trails which turns out to be a perfect place to put this hard tail free bike to the test. I start off on the old smaller beginner MTB trails before getting into the huge slopestyle jumps and pulling off tricks that really shouldn't of been done on this flimsy bike with ridiculous horn handle bars which must have came straight from the 80's!! Phoenix Bike park is filled with endless lines of jumps and wooden features to get sendy on, and I had so much fun here, I just wish I was on my normal bike and not the dangerous free bike!! What sort of tricks or free bike videos would you like to see next, let me know!!?

There is zero chance that bike was ever 360'd in its lifetime, then Sam comes along. I love how Sam takes a bike that was literally on the brink of extinction and gives it the most incredible day of it's existence instead.

Sam you should organise a game of bike with some other good mountain bikers and everyone has to ride a bike they genuinely got for free, they can do basic maintenance, tyres, tubes, grips, fix but not replace brakes etc.

Sam sending is just what the doctor ordered.
Best free bike challenge yet?!! Goes to show how its like 90% rider skill was absolutly ace to see that old school fully rigid mtb ridden hard and to its limits! Sam hitting almost all of the landings near perfect kept that bike alive. Makes me want to grab my old pub bike and try some of those moves that won't be nearly as easy as Sam makes them look.

Because of you I am now getting my mountain bike into the shop for some repairs, then I am going to attempt some of the easier tricks you taught in one of your videos. keep the frame an forks but upgrade everything else. wheels, tires, handlebars, crankset... you get the idea. create the ultimate rigid bike.

That's the first one I think really held up apart from the tyre. Sam Pilgrim, showing everyone, it's not what you ride but how much fun you can have on anything you ride! Legend.

"Look how the rubber on the rear tire is dry rotted and about to explode. Let's replace the rear, but LEAVE THE FRONT???" That was the sketchiest part of the entire thing! Well, that and leaving the "impaler" ends on the bars when you're jumping 12 feet in the air, on a free bike, ON A ROTTED FRONT TIRE. That was fairly sketch too. :-)

Excellent freebike challenge! Super fun and definitely inspirational to get out on the old bikes. Reminds me alot of my buddy's old fully rigid GT Avalanche from the late 90s. This also reminds me of something I think Hans Rey mentioned in one of his Q&As, responding to a question from a younger rider interested in getting into trials riding, he said the cheapest way to get into it was getting a used small or xs sized aluminum fully rigid v-brake mtb from the 90's, and learn how to ride trails on it before upgrading.

Wicked video, but also proves a point that is sometimes forgotten: the right bike to have is the one you've got.
The video proves a point, the Carrera was a high quality bike when it came out. There are a lot of bikes like that out there that were top of the food chain once that can be had for a song or for free. If you know what you're doing, you can still shred the hell out of them. Old don't mean crappy to the right rider and all that it takes to be the right rider is practice practice practice.
Now I'm gutted after spending all that money on a DH bike when I didn't have to 🤣

I got this for Xmas in 1992, loved it so much I put some ballistic shocks on it.

Strange that we used to think bar horns were helpful. Shocks didn't start being common until the 80's. V brakes were a godsend, and quick release was fancy. lol
