- Reverend Peyton of The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band teaching about finger style guitar techniques.
I've been wanting to shoot something like this ever since I met Rev, Breezy and Jayme back in 2007.
We had a few minutes before their recent show at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City. This was in an upstairs room in the old railroad boardinghouse right next to the tracks. You can hear the train whistle about halfway through.
Like I say ...damn you got that shit covered impressive my friend I love the old timee slide sound
The passing trains adds something to the music...in a good way!
That's some serious skills!
Right Royally blown away by that !
If anyone on here in the UK want to see this guy and his band, book yourself a ticket for Drumcamp Suffolk ! Apart from the Rev there'll be loads of other great performers and workshops.
I was lucky and saw him here in Detroit with Flogging Molly. Honestly I think the big damn band stole the show lol. My brother and I went and grabbed discs and they signed them for us. Great music and great musicians. It's nice to see both
Really good video. In a strange way, kinda reminds me of watching dimebag’s how to videos - watching something from a master that is nearly impossible for us mortals to ever achieve
wish we could get you guys to come play the newly restored McPherson Opera House - would be a perfect venue for your acoustic style.
True organic entertainment. So rare nowadays. Love them....
This is a unique style of fingerpicking
Rev can you teach us step by step?? No way I will ever get that at your speed. You Rock, thanks for showing us what we might be able to do if we stick to it. Be safe on your tour.
4 minutes and 4 seconds ago i thought i knew how to play a slide. maybe i'll take up a washboard
this is so awesome
woow fantastic !!!!
Yep, missed the group last time they played Topeka :( Purposely missed the Korn show at the Throttle last year to catch BDB - didn't dissapoint! It was a kick-ass show!!! I've passed along a couple vids to the executive director...not sure we can afford the fee but I'd love to see BDB come to town - right along I-35, just south of I-70 - two colleges in town. I know it'd be a success if the logistics could be hammered out...
@bigdamnfan I forgot to notice what video this was. There are no amps here at all. This was the Rev totally acoustic, with me picking up his voice with a shotgun mic and his guitar with a condenser.
@ChoppaBtch Ah, OK. I wanted to get these up before the Warped Tour started. This is not just to show off Rev's chops, but to introduce this style to a whole generation of players who might have never heard of it.
@bigdamnfan The acoustic is in standard, but his resonators are all open tuning, you can tell by how he strums all the open strings and it sounds a chord.
@BulletProof2088 On the recent Van's Warped Tour the Big Damn Band had a new T-shirt "Your favorite band's guitarist should have taken lessons from Reverend Peyton".
If you use the Firefox web browser and get the Download Helper add-on, you can download this video and import it into another video player so you can freeze the video and slow it down and get the fingering.
And do see the Big Damn Band in concert. As long as I've known him, the Rev is has always been willing to help other players.
@ThatBrittany True. I've seen him play borrowed guitars and get the same sound. His "tone" is in his fingers. I can also confirm that he has no effects at all, ever. There are two amps, a Fender Twin (I think) and a bass amp. He has a 3-way switch to move from guitar to guitar without switching cables. That is the only thing on the floor.
both are tuned to dadgad i think he uses it a lot I just stumbled onto them a couple weeks ago, great stuff,
@PwnageGravy I'll ask. I do know that I've never seen him re-tune a guitar on-stage, and he didn't while we were shooting these videos. When asked, he's always said he is using standard tuning.
@traywilson They've played Topeka and Wichita. It looks like a great venue - maybe someone will put together a festival to draw folks to McPherson.
2:05 is my favorite lick
@wtfomgbbq4 Yeah, the Rev is something. It's a bit like a drummer who can play in two different time signatures at the same time, like Billy Cobham or JD Bonebrake.
@ChoppaBtch Nah, whenever I get a comment in a language other than English, I use Bablefish and Google Language tools to find what it said, and try to translate a response. But I don't speak or read any language other than English.
@traywilson They are going to be tied up through fall with the Warped Tour. I know they'd like a venue between Kansas City and Denver - that's a long drive. I don't have any business connection to the band, they're just friends.
@mrgregory121 It sounds like an open tuning, I think this one is in open G and he has another one in open D.
@kdallen1234 Next time I see him, I'll see what we can do. Rev and his wife Breezy live in a very rural area and high-speed Internet is not available, otherwise he could upload his own instructional videos.
Lushes beard bro!
Tha train only makes it better.
@KodyRobinson1 Nah, like the Big Damn Band's music, the Rev's beard is genuine.
FLYING SQUIRRELS!
I think he has beard extensions
@csigusz27 Szívesen.
