The HP VT21 4-stroke RC model plane engine

  • This is a 30 year-old 4-stroke engine which has an Aspin Rotary Valve in the head rather than more conventional poppet valves and camshaft.
    These engines are very weak but also amazingly quiet.
    The airframe is a very old design from the 1960s I think and it weighs a ton. Flying this engine/airframe combination requires a very light touch on the sticks because it'll stall in an instant if you attempt to slow it up or use just a fraction too much elevator.
    Still, it makes a nice change from grossly overpowered trainers, 3D machines and pulsejet-powered RC models.

    A friend of mine lives next to an R/C airfield. Last year, he found the shattered remains of an airplane in his yard, and the only thing salvageable was the engine - an early version (brass valve barrel) HP vt.21. He gave it to me, as he isn't really interested in R/C planes, and I'm going to scratch-build a Lazy Bee over the upcoming winter months, because it's the perfect airframe for this "oddball" engine. Thanks for the video!

    The VT21 is known to be the most gutless 4 stroke. Yet here it performs admirably.

    What take off's and landing's. Steerable nose gear or no that was Awesome!! Glad to see you kept the lead wind screen. Love watching you fly this no matter when you do it. 👍👍👍

    I love this Bruce.
    Just bought a little .21 on ebay to put in a lightweight airframe.
    Cheers.

    This is one of my favorite vids from you. It looks to me that it is fun all out of proportion to its size, I like that!! You dont need a 1 to 1 power to weight ratio to fly.

    Thanks for this video. Just got one of these engines and see many have issues and I have to wonder if the tank vent is best to atmosphere. I’ve done this with some old Saito engines and improved consistency with idle and high rpm.
    Thanks again!

    Love that sound. Think of the neat little models you could build around that one. Polk's has a 36" Tiger Moth. Also I'm thinking scratch-built monoplanes a lot like this one. A Corby Starlet, say, or a Jurca Tempete.

    A real non electric four stroke internal combustion engine!
    The real excitement begins... HERE!
    PS xjet:
    If you need full throttle to land... move just a tad of the weight forward aft.
    Aircraft, like commecial airline aircraft have a 3 or more detent on the elevators to keep the nose down. However, for smaller RC aircraft the oposite would do better. The object is to balance speed vs climb.
    If you need more rpm's to land its because your nose is too heavy.
    But what do I know... I'm only a jet engine mechanic, airframe and balance was my room mate's proffession.

      Bill Yost Hi Bill, I own two of these engines, the issue is that they don’t idle well below 5000 rpm, they just stop. Seems to be a design issue. That’s the reason of landing at high rev compared to normal rc engines. Cheers

  • @ricsudukai1
    @ricsudukai1 10 років тому

    Been after a .25 version for a while myself.
    Seems the trick is castor oil only, no synthetic, fit only a standard short reach plug and prop them to rev out to two-stroke speeds. Can't get valve float at least!
    These are available brand new in .21, .25, .49 and possibly .61 - and all the parts as well via MECOA

    Just thought I'd put my two penny worth in and say, why don't you use a restrictor tie down when starting up your engines because if the engine was set on full throttle by mistake it could easily run into your hand causing severe lacerations.

    • @pauljames3993
      @pauljames3993 6 років тому

      That is mandatory at our local flying club Phil.

    • @laidalylc7
      @laidalylc7 6 років тому

      Hi Paul, it's quite the opposite here at our club since a member started his engine mistakenly on full throttle and it lurched into his hand and the prop lacerated his fingers and taking the tip off one, but having said that we all know that this is a dangerous hobby and sometimes it can bite back.I will say that I do enjoy watching your video's and only wish our weather here in England was as great as yours.Re; Phil.

    • @bernardw4842
      @bernardw4842 5 років тому

      Yeah I thought it was a little scary watching that starting technique. I'm careful starting mine, the first thing they make you do when you get your solo wings at most RC clubs is a safety check to make sure you're doing it right. But 9/10 times the very same examiner does your check then goes straight back to dangerous techniques himself! I always use either a hold-back or a starting table, and walk around behind the model after starting, I really don't like the way most ppl reach over the spinning prop to remove the glow igniter. Maybe I'm a fuddy duddy about it but I'd rather be super careful and know there's nothing to go wrong.

    i like your videos. me and my dad just got a thunder tiger f 54 4 stroke and we are lost when it comes to tuning 4 strokes right now when we give it full throttle it goes up and then falls in rpm. i have looked everywhere for 4 stroke tuning videos and nothing. we are using a tach but we dont know what that means. thanks in advance Paul F paul9299(at)gmail(dot )com
