In September 2011, St Vincent took a giant leap forward with the release of third album, Strange Mercy. This time out Annie Clark was to combine her long-celebrated musical virtuosity with ambitious songwriting that ran a gamut of emotional cadences, all the while underpinned by a colourful sense of melody.
Recording these songs live for the first time, St Vincent performed four tracks from Strange Mercy for the tenth visual installment in the 4AD Session series. Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie's new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums). Given St Vincent's transgression from the underground to the pop spotlight over the course of three studio albums, it's somewhat fitting that Shangri-La host the session having initially earned its name as a secret spot known only through word of mouth.

She makes the guitar playing on 'Surgeon' look effortless when it is not.
Taffy O'Keefe Right? Especially singing while doing that shit... Not easy at all!
i know right D:
I tried learning Surgeon and I thought my fingers were going to fall off. i cannot play that fast lmao
Stole the words from my mouth.
Her hands look like a machine playing that riff. Doesn't look that easy.
Because it is easy... To her. Just like Les Claypool playing "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver."
Really, if you practice enough, it's not that big of a deal. It's like talking while walking.
I am so violently impressed right now. Holy cow.
***** Accurate.
This set it incredible
0:05 Chloe in the Afternoon
3:03 Surgeon
7:32 Strange Mercy
11:53 Year of the Tiger
thank you man!
+Eduardo Roth Sure, I love doing that. I just have one question:
Why have some of my lists for songs vanished? Not in this video in particular, but other ones.
Maybe because the uploader wants the viewers to watch their video in its entirety.
Maybe.
Why they (4AD) didn't add Cheerleader to the tracklist?
Lost count of how many times I’ve watched this! So amazing!
What a sound! St Vincent usually sounds better in live performances than in the records
It's good to see avant-garde music hitting the ears of people for once.
I must have been watching this session already 5 times this week.
You are not alone bro..
The ability to lend one's voice through a variety of styles, and retain original quality, is a rarity among today's artists. Wonderfully delicious vocals.
I am 100% smitten with this talented individual. Annie Clark aka "St. Vincent." Not only is she very easy on the eyes she destroy's the guitar. She is also on a very good label as well. Balling out of control.
she's got the craziest set up for her guitar effects. that pedal board in front of her is completely run through a MIDI controller which is plugged into the laptop that her keyboard player is sitting behind. he controls when the guitar tones change. most of these songs she has 3 or 4 changes from verse to chorus to solo.
Astounding level of talent.
This is guitar playing that I've always wanted to hear but never have. She is mind-blowing.
That guitar phrase she plays in "Surgeon": Awesome!
guitanthony riftfano
Sublime.

My friend tried to get me into her years ago I just couldn't do it. I'm a guitar player.myself and her style rubbed me in so many wrong ways and Ive always loved obscure stuff. But I saw a video a month ago. And it bothered me still. I knew she was talented and had a style of her own but It triggers my critique and soul. So this last month I've been forcing myself to keep listening. The fact that it made me emotionally bothered intrigued my curiosity As a guitar player and musician. I'm finally getting it... Her studio albums are amazing. It's rare when I fall down a new rabbit hole like this.... She is amazing. I needed this
She's so beautiful that I don't know what to do
One of the sweetest guitarists! So gorgeous.
This is so ridiculously amazing!!
so amazing. I've had a crush on Annie ever since the first time I saw her play live like 10 yrs ago. what a thoroughly amazing individual. Her music is a great reflection of her being.
I love this artist, l feel lucky I got to hear who St. Vincent and the music from she, the artist.
She's definetly going to get haters, but that's only because she's going to get lovers.
Wonderful ST.VINCENT, she continues to surprise me & to enlighten me !
She's got the stuff. I grow more and more interested the more I hear. Influences.... maybe Dexter Romweber, Karlheinz Stockhausen, David Bowie, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Hoagy Carmichael, Don Preston, and Lao Tzu. These songs seem to have been discovered in the diatonic DNA of popular science primordial music soup. It makes my brain dance. I give it a 10.
Kate Bush
Apparently she really loves Nick Cave as well, lil bit of an unlikely one but still cool to hear.
Annie knows her music she even covered a Big Black tune.
Badassery indeed!
I was far from being a St Vincent fan when I saw her play the Treasure Island festival in San Francisco years ago. As I watched her play, it seemed as if she stood ten feet tall. I felt like a snake being charmed by a snake charmer. I was instantly hooked from that time on. Her talent is immense.
Seriously who would dislike this?! I mean
Soggy. Interesting word to describe music... may adopt that one. :)
People that don't understand it. It's not easy to listen to this music, it's not poppy, neither "radio friendly", and most of people prefer something that's comfortable for their ears rather than something experimental and with sense. I'm not throwing shit, it's just what it is.
***** You have a point, definetly, but from my personal perspective, I like to be challenged by these songs, in following the tempo with lots of twists, listen to those guitar sounds that are super original, etc. I don't agree with the "it's not catchy" statement because I don't think a song has to be catchy to be good, but I liked the "conceptual girl that was left alone" part, lol.
Point being, it is NOT music for everyone, that's for sure, but I can respect your dislike because you actually know what your talking about, and it's just not your cup of tea, rather than people disliking it because it doesn't have a cute boy singing it.
***** And Astor is major word here in Argentina, obviously, 'cause being a genious...
"catchy"?
Stunning live performer - happy to see her get so much love on Best of 2014 lists...
I saw St Vincent Thursday night in Memphis at Minglewood Hall and could have cried when the show was over. What am I gonna do? Come back soon!
I had a fascination for St. Vincent but I'm over it now.
came back here after checking out annie's new song, this one gives so much more feelings in my opinion, stellar performance
underrated! St Vincent deserve more attention.
Ah the good ol days of 4AD.
Her fingers flying on "Surgeon" fills my heart with... makes me feel all... tingly inside- like a tomato!!!
Strangly beautiful Lady! And her vocal and the style of singing reminds me BJORK. GREAT!
Beautiful in so many ways
annie
she looks so good here! WOW
I Love her De-pitched Overdriven Fuzz sound. Brilliant. I read somewhere that she feeds her pedalboard into guitar rig to get many of her sounds. NIN did this a lot.
She is definitely in my home movies.
Her playing the bass on Surgeon was BOSS.
I so wasn't ready for such epic awesomeness
The first time heard this I was high asf and I thought it was Alien music hahaha
This sounds way better then the album. Amazing set up with the synths and that digital sounding guitar.
so freagin good...especially that tapping riff on Surgeon
por fin encontre un grupo nuevo donde la cantante es linda, canta y toca bien la guitarra y que me gusta la musica sobre todo...
No es grupo, es solita, se hace llamar Saint Vicent, es muy egocentrica como todo genio
I am amazed how the synth fits with her vocals. The whole approach to these short guitar phrases is amazing. Great camera work I wonder the frame rate? I like the Overlays of her singing feels at times that her voices carry away and multiply with the synth. Weird how you cannot hear her or Bjork inhale when singing great skill to carry voice in length like that.
Wow, I am soo loving her right now!!!
You're such a nice guy. I hope everything is just bright and sparkly every time you open your eyes.
I'm in love with this music.........
Dang i wasn't planning on watching the whole thing but i couldn't tear my ears or eyes away this is incredible
I'm in love with her finger movements...
Both the camera angles and the editor are immaculate
Wow this is so amazing I love Annie Clark so much
_Heal my heart_
that guitar freakout at the end of surgeon is one of the top 10 sexiest things ive ever seen.. the stagger, then the smile.. perfect
I'm not totally sure but if you go to the Wikipedia Entry for Annie Clark it details a relatively recent rig configuration and links to the interview on guitarplayer where she talks about it. The interview really underscores how talented of a player she is.
Ok... bookmarking this page for frequent use... :)
New fav band, new crush
same here!
Sounds like Laurie Anderson & David Byrne's love child
shes gnarly
Outstanding.
that's some next level guitar technique.
@EGarrett01 your left with that hauntingly familiar repeated guitar melody. Then back to the same build up, with a different melody on top, and in a different, but recognizable fashion. It leaves you needing something more, and she gives it to you. The drums lead into the catharsis of "if i ever see that..." That part is magnificent, full of emotion, for her and her listeners, the soaring vocals and togetherness of the whole band are a stark contrast to the syncopated and fractured other parts.
pretty talented
This is super! Thank you very much!
"if i ever meet that dirty police man that roughed you up..." man she means it! Shes so real.
She is a complete monster on guitar
I love Annie Clark's music.
Sheer Brilliance!
and Tom Morello, hehe. Malupit.. Lalo na yung bagong album niya na kalalabas lang last week.. Tom Morello na yung guitar solo sa kantang "Digital Witness"
Trying to read while watching this in the background is NOT working. She is hypnotizing.
Tracklisting:
1. Chloe In The Afternoon 0.00
2. Surgeon 3.03
3. Strange Mercy 7.33
4. Year Of The Tiger 11.53
Anyone else fall in love?
Some probably do it to "pose," but there are those that are simply struggling to find a way to do something different - to be original, to be new. And some people are just being themselves. I think it's impossible to tell them apart though, and even more impossible to speak for them. It's an interesting discussion though.
Now I don't know no why?... 😂😂💙®️🇺🇲🇮🇹.... Love you...
Lana DEL Rey and Annie Clark are certainly not the same...
St Vincent is an extraordinary guitar player, she's absolutely amazing in gigs, and her songs are truly well written. LDR is a pure marketing product without soul.. Uncomparable ..
Que buen gusto!
I've been in a song writing rut for months and feeling generally lacking in original creativity. That all changed when I discovered St. Vincent a few days ago.
yes
why is she so beautiful?
I saw her first!!!
Music HERO
Some pretty weird sh*t. Not sure I like it that much, but love that someone creates and performs music like this - brilliant!!
im a new st. vin fan (getting totes obsessed of course) so i could be wrong, but cuz she's a portlandia fan, i wonder if chloe in the afternoon is about that hilarious episode with chloe sevigny picnic, lol
Bomb!
whoa, thought the same after only hearing the first song
portis head meets regina spektor? ethier or iam falling in love with st vincent!!!
Well, the feeling is probably be mutual so I guess you have nothing to worry about.
For the lazy:
0:00 - Chloe In The Afternoon
3:03 - Surgeon
7:30 - Strange Mercy
11:53 - Year Of The Tiger
this is so cool. i wonder where I could get the mp3s
cool stuff :D "year of the tiger "
Strange mercy is so good fuck
I read and interview that it's a fuzz pedal + overdrive pedal + boss super shifter
Her guitar sound is original and I dig everything she's doing. The guitar choice is what makes her sound different. I don't see what's wrong with the timing and all the things you said and there's not anything random about this band, when you want to sound different you have t approach music n other ways. You're entitled to have an opinion but assuming things about a band or their fans makes you look bad. You are not talking with just pretentious people you never know who's behind the computer
Well, this is what if Sade Adu started singing in an alternative rock band.
And by the way I liked it a lot.
I'd judge them how they perform live. I'm an instrumentalist and I'm around tons of Musicians. In the studio, you can perfect errors and dislikes with the technology. Which is why pretty much anyone can be a "artist" these days. But in person, there are things you can't do in a mechanical/tech way. Unless you have a bunch of computers and shit. Imogen Heap is enchanting live! She's interactive with the audience. She would ask for a note/key from the audience and create a song right there,
I can't get enough! it's musical CRACK!
Man I wish Northern Lights was on here
Interesantes!
@ThePersonWhosCool I think it's a Hagstrom of some kind.
😍😍😍👏👏👏
The best female version of Robert Fripp... KIng Creamson " Paranoid " !!
whatttttttttttttttttttttttt sounds a lot like bjork. Her voice I mean, and style at times.
The solid editing work captures the essence of Annie's badassery. I dig.
Word.
Badassery in deed.
same
Yes. Fully does.
omg, perfect. #RT
A way better and more talented guitarist than all those oh-so-manly fuckers that rip off the same Slash solo in every fucking song (like, well, Slash himself). Those who dislike her just for developing her own style and being a woman are disgusting people. St Vincent is just crazy good.

Show that you can do different, or better, to back up your claim. A simple request to show that you are not anything but a troll. I look forward to your silence.
