First I want to say Korean think the lyrics are cute and innocent, same for most of the country in Asia, so I think the reason why is because we don’t have cookie as a slang word there, cookie is just cookie, nothing more. Also, the girls told us the meaning of the song is cookie represents their CD, so it’s like they “bake” music for the fans. But I know people from the US is gonna get confused for sure, I already knew it when the song came out. since Hybe also want them to succeed in the US market, they should be more careful in order to avoid these kind of problems

Yeah. I personally believe that cookies=cds. We’re eating up their cds. There could be a double meaning, but I still think it’s genuinely about their cds. A saw a Korean person’s take on the lyrics, and it cleared up most of lyrics for me.

It doesn’t make sense for it to be about cds…let’s be honest. They talk about boys and how the boy can only get the “cookie” at their “place.” I think the company definitely knew what they were doing when writing this. A lot of their songs talk about boys..Cookie was definitely written with a double meaning. Just like red velvet ice cream cake.

@@bertram5806 some groups do that. For example, Loona. Their lore is shown throughout the mv and is in the lyrics. Lore-wise they’d be talking to each other(saying the lyrics as a conversation between their lore characters), but then they’d randomly add boy in it, even when their lore has nothing to do with a boy. It might just be for the people not interested in watching the mv’s so that the song sounds like a regular song. The “slang” for cookie in Korea is cds. If an artists’ song is good, they’ll say they’re making cookies, cuz I guess they eat them up. And in Cookie mv, during the “bet you know, bet you know” part, the cookies were quite literally turning into cds. NJ isn’t RV. They’re not even grown adults. I’m sure they wouldn’t blatantly make this song about the English slang knowing they’ll get backlash. Think about it. I’m not saying there’s no double meaning, but I think the overtone is genuinely about cds.

Koreans have referred to cookies as CDs that they ‘bake in the oven’ for a long time and the members of NewJeans have explained that the meaning of the lyrics is this, specifically. In Korea cookie just means cookie like most non-English speaking countries.

Cookie is supposed to be slang for CD in Korean that’s why you see their CD in the background of the mv. Cookie here in the USA it has a different meaning which is why people are not liking the lyrics especially since they’re young.

Cookie means CD in korea. For the phrase "baking a CD", making music.

You have to understand cultral dtfference, OMG in my prospective I am a Korean the lyrics no problem at all. I know what you think and it's disgusting sorry but English is not the only one language. I mean American English.

While we do understand that English is not the only language in the world, we also understand that k-pop has become extremely global and therefore have many international fans that English is their native language. As groups (especially from the big 4) seek to become global stars, you would think someone from the company would see that the context could be misinterpreted and just rework it so that people could pay attention to the song and their talent and not the lyrics (especially for a debut and the controversy the CEO was already facing). 💪🏾🎭🇧🇷

Understanding cultural differences is a two way street though. So that mean Koreans have to meet westerners half way and also do the work to understand the differences. Koreans shouldn’t be lazy in this regard and expecting foreigners to do all the intellectual labour.

if the lyrics were written by Koreans this would make sense…but cookie was written by a Swedish woman and an English woman so…take that information however you’d like to…

@@nameisamine It’s Korean music. They don’t need to cater to Americans.

@@JohnLee-db9zt the Kpop industry has deliberately been catering to international audiences for over a decade now. With the backing of the National government. It has been a deliberate cultural export as power of national project to expand South Korea’s soft power in the world. What do you think the Hallyu wave was? Just an accident? 🥴 also the industry deliberately started pivoting to catering to America after bad relations between Korea and China. You’re VERY naive the politics behind these industries to say something like that with a straight face.

Ummm. So indertsand that the lyrics are innapropriate. An adult wrote these lyrics for them but they are minors. So i just hope you know their age for the next reaction...it came off a little pedophiley how you talked about it.

That’s your interpretation which you are totally entitled to but as it has been mentioned before, cookie is slang for cd in Korean so their are different ways to view it. 💪🏾💪

We didn’t say we did or didn’t believe it, we will just stating what the CEO said about the controversy (which she herself is problematic but that’s another issue). And we are well aware of our “character” so are not too worried about what someone who we have never communicated with thinks of it especially when they seem defensive and argumentative. 💪🏾💪
