Cosmere | Top 10 Cosmere Main-Characters

- The Cosmere is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most expansive universes in the fantasy genre. Brandon Sanderson has managed to not only craft multiple stories, but multiple worlds and magic systems to match those stories as well. So it should come as no surprise that he has also added a number of main characters and heroes for us to support and cheer for throughout all these individual stories and worlds.
Well as an avid fan of the Cosmere and almost all of Brandon Sanderson’s works, I thought it would be fun to look at all these characters and rank them from least to most favourite. We’ll be looking at characters from Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker and The Stormlight Archive so the list is quite inclusive of most of his Cosmere works...

There are so many great characters in the cosmere that its so hard to make a top ten but here is mine:

3. Lightsong
4. Vin
5. Kelsier
6. Szeth
7. Ten Soon
8. Spook
9. Teft
10. Wax

Kaladin was my favorite till Oathbringer... The Black Thorn's story arc was amazing and he became my favorite

Every time I try to come up with a list of my favorite Cosmere characters, it quickly becomes impossible. As I dwell on an particular character, they then start to almost immediately move up my list. It constantly changes with every new character I think about,, or every time I reevaluate one. So basically it’s like whomever I’m reading or thinking about at the moment becomes one of my faves while I’m experiencing their world with them.
It was tough for me to make a list as well, but I just had to be honest with myself
So mine would be (I’ll go reverse order for dramatic effect)
10. Vasher- to me he’s like Dalinar Lite. He’s grumpy and constantly fighting with his anger, but still remains kind. Very complicated person
9. Lord Ruler- TFE wouldn’t be what it is without the threat of this man. He’s jaded and callous, and creates a very eerie precedent.
8. Szeth- The way he gets the story moving right away in the WoKs is just... mwah. He’s simple in some ways, but he’s the perfect foil to Kaladin in every way. So so so interesting right off the bat.
7. Wax/Wayne- even though they’re very cool on their own I have to lump these guys together as I enjoyed both of them- and their dynamic together, very much. I love picturing Wax in his action scenes with his duster flapping in the wind. 10/10 cool factor.
6. Sahzed- Just... the most beautiful character arc. I felt his depression and redemption. What a character.
5. Shallan- arguably the most complex character in the cosmere. She may not have as many “hold my beer” moments as Kaladin, but her back story and internal monologue is fantastic. (NO MATING)
4. Vin- We really grow up with Vin. She wasn’t given a chance in life... until she was. And watching her grow and still somehow find a way to be selfless in the face of tragedy after tragedy... my heart goes out to her
3. Kaladin- What’s left to say? I agree- one of the most beloved protagonists in fantasy, certainly of our time. He has a way of making you want to slap him one minute and then drop your jaw the next.
2. Kelsier- ugh, this guy is just... all heart. I love him dearly. I’d be so scared if somebody gave this man a Green Lantern ring because his willpower is absolutely insane. He’s so charismatic and likable.
1. Dalinar- Yeah. The man, the myth, the legend. He’s constantly fighting his inner beast in such a satisfying way. Young Dalinar was an animal, and adult Dalinar is almost his own foil... except sometimes even in his Middle Ages he still lets the Blackthorn out. And it’s glorious!
Edit: (I think I realize you’re not including villains or more side characters, so sorry I did in my list!)
Of course Dalinar is still number 1! Haha Dalinar is bae
Judging by the preview of Kelsier's role in The Stormlight Archive hinted at in the latest book, I'm not sure whether he's gonna be so likeable any more!
A top 10 is such a difficult list to make. Mine would probably be:

3. Jasnah...wish there was more of her
4. Dalinar
5. Sazed

8. Wax
9. Adolin
10. Navani
I really like Jasnah too, but I feel like we're sorely missing a viewpoint book from her

I’ve only read Mistborn and Stormlight so I was fast forwarding through a lot of this but what you said about the characterization of Kaladin, Shallan, Elend, Vin, Sazed, and Dalinar also reflected my own thoughts. They are wonderfully crafted and written, and while they might not be my favorite (Renarin), I can really appreciate the thoughts and storytelling that went into their personal narratives. I cannot wait to see how the Stormlight characters you mentioned (and other people in the books) are expanded upon later.
Sanderson is a master with characterisation
TenSoon is cool also

I'm assuming that Nightblood wasn't on this list because he was so far above the rest of the cast it wasn't fair to compair him to everyone else. Like, look at that character growth! He goes from an evil weapon of mass destruction to an evil-destroying weapon of mass destruction!

I'd still put kaladin on top. But i have to admit that dalinar's flashback arc is the best one. And i think its such a good choice to start the story at a point when he is such a good guy (tho hesitant and unsure of himself) to then go back and show you how bad he was, and yet, knowing where he goes, just like the characters around him, especially his wife, we can see the good things about young dalinar.

I wouldn't put Lightsong that high up, but I love him enough as a character to not fight you on that choice XD
@@RavensRants he might fall a bit down after some time but currently he is the best main character imo. i startede almost a year ago with reading again after 10ish years of no reading... but i am also a sucker for the heroic sacrifice trope. so people who does that tent to get higher up on my list of characters.

Every other Radiant was broken by actions and circumstances that occurred to them. In a way, each of the Radiant's were victims. Kaladin's brother and squad were killed (as well as everyone he ever tried to help), his commander turned on him, and he ended up as a slave working the bridge crews. Shallan was a product of a broken home, one full of abuse and secrets, that turned her into a killer. Renarin has his health issues and being sidelined by his entire family due to that. Jasnah was likely raped; it isn't spoken about in the books; however, the context clues are there. Even if she wasn't, it's clear she went thru something very traumatic. Lift has had a very hard life. Szeth carried the burden of his Oathstone, being truthless (when in fact he was correct), and the subsequent string of assassinations he was forced to perform.
Even from the secondary string of Radiant's, all were in some way victims to mental health, addiction, betrayal, abuse, neglect, and/or cruelty that broke each and every one of them.
Except Dalinar.
Dalinar was the only one that decided the actions that broke him. (Excepting maybe Teft, who dealt with addiction, but that may not have been his only issue.) The Blackthorne was unbreakable to the rest of the world, unstoppable in his pursuit of victory. No one could've ever broken Dalinar, but Dalinar. His hand held the torch that burnt his world to the ground in the Rift. He was the unstoppable force meet unmovable object; all within himself.
Yes, Dalinar dealt with addiction. Yet, he was living sober long before the choices that led to him being Radiant. Yes, he was a butcher of men, yet had turned to the pursuit of peace at least a year before the beginning of the books. Hell, he knew both the first and the second Oaths immediately.
Kaladin may have been born to fly; Dalinar was born to be Radiant.
I would like to note that Dalinar is a broken man. His force of will is literally the only thing keeping him together at any given time. Nor do I mean to slight the events that broke Dalinar. I only mean to point out that Dalinar is the only Radiant that brought about the breaking of their soul net by their own actions exclusively.

Vin is my favorite. Kaladin is staring to get there. My first cosmere book however was The Final Empire. Maybe that's why I'm biased.

I liked Elantris more than you did, I think, but I can see where you're coming from. Raoden is a bit of a budget Kaladin who suffers from not getting *nearly* as much page time as Kal so he doesn't get nearly as much development.
My only problem with Dalinar is that I have trouble sometimes following a narrative that goes from present to 17 years in the past and back again. It doesn't highlight the "warlord to diplomat" narrative as much as I'd like, but if Dalinar had *started* the series as a warlord, we'd only have seen him as a reformed villain, so I see how Sanderson's style was necessary in this case.

I have Elend much higher. He was my favorite character in the mistborn series.

Dalinar is definitely #1 book three really set that for me.
Vin is my number 1 by far.

But like, spook, and ham, and clubs, and emperor guy in warbreaker, and nightsblood, and vasher and vivenna, and Wayne, and funny guy in storm light, and rock and and and... here’s the thing, I NEED ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS to be in the top 10... I mean... Sanderson learned from Jordan that it’s all the excess characters that really make the story. That the story isn’t about 1 person or 10 but a whole bunch... and so it would be hard for me to nail down 10, when the others are so magical too... ugggghh
Also emperor guy in mistborn, he’s pretty damn interesting too! And kelsiers brother... and and and...

I agree for the most part. But id put Sazed a little higher. I love him a lot. But Dalinar is best for sure.

I know there is no mistborn era 1 characters and elantris characters. Elantris gets overshadowed by the same characters done better. And I pretty much only liked the first mistborn era 1 book. I also read them the longest ago and no one stands out in my memory.

What ever my favorite character is in the book I'm currently reading is mine.... They are all too close to pick for me.
One underated character I like though is Hrathan

However while I'm being a demanding fan of yours, a top 10 list of non-human purely magical characters from the Cosmere would be an interesting video too maybe? Syl, Pattern, Nightblood, Siri's Seon, Eshonai... Just saying.

Lightsong should def be on this list. He was easily the best character in Warbreaker and I'd personally put him at no. 3 after Kaladin and Dalinar

I think Mistborn Era 2 is realy badlly treated here, just because its not a true fantasy but more of a Deterctive Western Story with Mistborn Magic. I Realy Like Wax from Era 2 and Wayne is my favorit Comedic Relife Character from the Cosmere, while still having a deeper Story Arc. And i belive we will get one of the biggest Cosmere twist this year with Wax and Wayne 4 somhing only bestet next year with Stormlight 5 i think there is a reason those two box are so close to each other and i think they will be a bridge.
