Viewing the world through the lens of stories and narratives.
The Lord Ruler | Mistborn Lore
The Lord Ruler is an enigma of a man. Near the beginning of my channel, I made a video in defence of the Lord Ruler. Was he as much of an evil man as people assume? Or was he more of a ruthless utilitarian caught between a series of difficult choices and power he could barely comprehend, let alone use effectively.
While I won’t rehash that discussion here, I did feel it was prudent for us to examine the man behind the title. It’s worth recapping and looking at what we know about this man who once ruled a planet and had an entire religion dedicated to him. Who was the Lord Ruler? What do we know about him and his history?
It should go without saying that there will be spoilers for the first Mistborn trilogy in this video - at least concerning the Lord Ruler, his past, and his identity.

How To Deal With Worldbuilder's Disease | Writing & Worldbuilding
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
Worldbuilding is one of those elements in fiction that is unique to sci-fi & fantasy and its many subgenres. And for many of us, it is what initially draws us in to the genre. Some people get drawn in because of the worldbuilding of some other author’s story. Others simply get drawn in at the prospect of worldbuilding their own setting for a story they want to tell. And while I would definitely...
The Stormlight Archive & The Murky Morality Of Colonialism | Philosophy Of The Stormlight Archive

Is Colonialism evil? It’s a loaded question that requires quite a bit of unpacking. And this is the internet, so directly talking about a topic like this will probably result in a hate-mob knocking at my door. That is unless I look at the question through the prism of allegory, metaphor, or story. So let’s do just that! The Stormlight Archive, despite not yet being finished, is probably my top ...
How South Park Exemplifies Free Speech | Raven's Rants
Переглядів 364Рік тому
In today's video we discuss the concept of Free Speech through the lense of South Park. Do we allow freedom of speech, but at the same time the freedom to offend? Or do we stifle freedom of speech in the name of being sensitive, but at the same time jeopardize our own freedoms? And what is the impact of this on the creative spirit? Through looking at how South Park tackles free speech, we can h...
Outline Vs Discovery Writing | Writing & Worldbuilding

Writing. It seems so simple, in theory. Just think up a story then put words on paper, right? Oh if only it were that easy. Oh sure you could just do that, but in all likelihood, you’d end up having to start over anyway. You see, there are actually different approaches to how one can go about writing a novel. These approaches are all on a sliding scale, but there are two main styles of writing ...
The Making Of A Man | The Philosophy Of How To Train Your Dragon

What is a man? Or more specifically, what does it mean to be a man? What must one do in order to become a man? These are questions that have plagued young boys and men for millennia. I wouldn’t presume some kind of divine knowledge that will allow me to answer such a question with 100% accuracy. These are questions that have never been given a universal answer and I doubt that they ever will. W...

The Shards of Adonalsium are wreathed in shadow and mystery. While we’ve spent some time with certain Shards and even know some people who eventually became Shards, we’re a long way from fully understanding them and their history. On Roshar, for example, you have the Shards of Honor, Cultivation, & Odium. On Nalthis, you have Endowment. On Taldain, you have Autonomy. And on Sel you once had Dev...

Life is so uncertain. Despite all your attempts to the contrary, you can never predict something with 100% accuracy. Oh sure you may get things right, but my point is that everything is up to chance until the moment it happens. Life is unpredictable in more ways than one. There is, however, one thing in life that is certain. One thing that was set in stone the moment you were born and that cann...
Rick Doesn't Understand Freedom Vs. Responsibility | The Philosophy Of Rick & Morty
Переглядів 956Рік тому
Freedom is a word that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some see it as the ultimate liberating force. Some see it as a necessary concept in a world full of things that seek to subdue and subjugate. And some see it as an excuse to avoid responsibility for one’s friends, family, or society. Personally, I see freedom as one of the most fundamental and crucial ideals in...

The Art Of The First Sentence
Переглядів 902Рік тому
For many readers, the first sentence may not seem to be the most important part of the book. But readers generally don’t know how the sausage is made. They don’t look deeper at the mechanics of how a book is written because they don’t have to. A movie fan doesn’t have to know how the film was made in order to enjoy it. A food connoiseur doesn’t have to understand the mechanics behind food chemi...
Nature V.S. Technology | The Philosophy Of Good Hunting

In this video I want to look at a short story from Netflix’s Love, Death, & Robots called Good Hunting. It’s a story about nature and magic, of man and machine. A story about man’s hubris and man’s genius. From small, terrified creatures at the mercy of nature, we used technology to fight and claw our way to global dominance. We stumbled along the way, and definitely made mistakes, but ultimate...
The Five Primary Kingdoms Of Roshar | The Stormlight Archive

In today's Cosmere Lore video, we'll be discussing the main kingdoms from Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. I recently made videos on Vorinism from the Stormlight Archive as well as the planet of Roshar. And while I am happy with what was covered in those videos, I’ve increasingly become aware of just how deep the Roshar rabbit hole goes. There’s just so much to explore in the Stor...
How To Write Hard Magic Systems | Writing & Worldbuilding
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
When you’re working on the planning stage of your novel, you will inevitably get to the part where you need to flesh out the magic system of your story. Some of you may opt to write a soft magic system that just brings a sense of awe and wonder to the reader. The rest of you, however, will likely opt for a harder magic system. Now I want to be clear here. Hard and soft magic systems exist on a ...

What does it mean to be fulfilled? What is the nature of fulfillment? Personally, I believe it is a sense of completeness and inner tranquility that comes from performing at a task that not only improves your own life, but also improves the lives of others. As entrepreneur Tom Bilyeu would put it, fulfillment is how you feel about yourself when you are by yourself. He says that happiness is fle...

Diversity Is The Talismanic God Of Woke Hollywood | Should We Care About Raceswapping?
It’s funny you keep saying she faces her problems head on when here I was thinking that avoidance is her main attribute. Whenever something reminds her of her past in the smallest way, that personality hides and whimpers while another personality is forced to take over
I think its time to redo this video
I dont know who would win in a fight. Whoever the author would want honestly. But i do know this. Kaladin is awesome. But by stormlight 4 everyone everywhere is a knight radiant. Vin on the other hand is a rare mistborn. To me she is more badass in her books. Kaladin has ptsd he cant help it
Willshaper
This is going to need an update
I think the real question is is Brandon actually going to do a real crossover novel that has characters from all over the casmeir interacting together against a universal threat? I think at first this was all just kind of cute to throw in a reference to another book here or there, or just say that they’re in the same universe, but now he has built this universe out to the point where it’s almost like we have to have a novel connecting it all together.
I think the ghostbloods segemnt needs to be updated. Now we know their primary purpose is to protect scadrial and they are led by kelsier and the rosharan branch seems to be a loose cannon
I’m sorry but saying that Kal beats Vin is nonsense in my opinion. If you allow Kal to have all the powers of a Windrunner that means that Vin has all the powers of a Mistborn. Vin could kill that man in seconds if that’s the case. Two words: Bendalloy and Chromium. Speed bubbles to get in close. Chromium to leech him of his investiture so he can’t heal. A duralumin and pewter enhanced dagger strike through the shard plate (if shardplate is not also leechable) into Kals forehead.
I did find myself pushing through the Serene chapters to get to Hrathen’s chapters. Problem is the bulk of the exposition was housed in the Serene chapters. To Sanderson’s credit, Raoden and Serene are likable and he keeps her from going full Mary-Sue. Great book overall.
Does anyone else cast him as Tom Hindleston in your mindteathre?
Elend was definitely my favourite character in Mistborn, he became a total chad
Hope you are doing well! Can't wait to see you back
Willshapers can use spiritual cohesion to combine the physical realm with the spiritual realm and thus teleport. Jasnah (Elsecaller) used transportation in the city of Thaylenah Battle. She transported her soulcasting to others. It was incredibly impactful. Lightweavers can "substantiate" their illusions into near-real objects, which are nearly as sharp and deadly as a shardblade. They can materialize weapons at will from behind their opponents, making them extremely unpredictable. They could soulcast a wall behind their opponent, then use hard light to slam them into the wall, or stab them from below or behind. Dustbringers can ignite the air. They can use abrasion to make things more abrasive and rough. Dustbringers rock.
Seems odd that when all the Heralds went to braize(to hold off the voidbringers), desolations were only a few years apart. Yet after the last desolation, Taln was able to hold them off for 4500 years by himself.
One thing I wonder. If Hoid had the chance to ascend as the others did does that mean there is a free floating piece of Adonalsium out there? Did he give it to someone who wasnt involved in the shattering? Did someone take up two pieces?
What a silly dude
And here I thought I was the only South African that's heard of this series
Engagement 🎉
Who the hell is Felt 😅 I need to re read mistborn
Why not Vin like she faught the Inquisitors
Ey a South African channel, what are the odds. You've got a sub :)
Thank you very much!! This video has illuminated the mess I had in my head about the Heralds. Without a doubt you are a Radiant Knight of the order that governs Pallia, a Truthwatcher 🤩
Controlling the investiture economy would be huge... And i cant want to see an allomancer and surgebinder sparring
I predict that transportation will also include teleportation at some point, making Elsecallers terrifying
Can I watch this before reading RoW?
I was in college when Potter came out. I will always say "it's not a good series. You don't ##$*&#$ing explain how wands work in the final book. No being for kids is not an excuse." /cheeky crabby rant
Does anyone know why Raven stopped making videos?
In all of my amateur, never to be published fiction. The same first line always appears "It's not easy, being the daughter of a Goddess". I suppose the limits of my writing are exposed by never coming up with a second sentence, to rival that. The first sentence opens the door. The second sentence shows you what is behind it. I peaked with the door. Oh Dear.
I'm fine with the traditional fantasy races as long as you do something unique with them. Like how an elf from skyrim will differ from an elf from dragonage. They may both be immortal, pointed eared humans but their history and motivations bring you to two different conclusions about them.
Hrm, out of date. The Ghostbloods are primarily Scadrian, though they do operate heavily on Roshar. Also, we know exactly where Vasher is.
Hoid is the body of Adonalsium
Ever played paladin in vanilla wow? Progression (+patience) is pretty powerful in combat.
I'm with you on this one. Hrathen was easily my favorite character, and I found myself enjoying the scenes that he was in more than any others. Hearing his thoughts made me feel the tension, the disillusionment, the struggle, and the determination that comprised his character. Raoden and Sarene have their own journeys and arcs, but Hrathen's is the most poignant and visceral.
So... i got further into the cosmere, and did some research, most of the comments assume that a shardblade instant kills marsh, except Brandon has said i interviews that BloodMakers (gold Fuecharmy) can heal a wound from a ShardBlade. So this fight is far from one sided.
Abrasion allows control over friction of other things too. See Edge dancer when Lift uses it to make a window open quietly
Bro, Bondsmiths #9??? What did the god-king of Tukar teach you? He did ridiculously powerful things that we don't even understand. Heck, Ishar with his Bondsmith abilities changed the world and created the orders, potentially the spren and the surgebinding
Update: Virtuosity shard named in Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
So they basically want to become the Guild Navigators in Dune. Control the most valuable resource in the universe, and through it, control transportation
Moash>Kaladin
Troll. He literally spends the fourth book trying to get someone to commit suicide. He is the embodiment of letting your past turn you into a monster. A serial killer is not considered good just because they experienced racism. Also he killed teft. You are either stupid or a horrible person
It's kinda hard to take your analysis sincerely when you repeatedly use woke and other terms to discuss the sometimes admittedly skewed viewpoints on the left when it comes to diverse casting, yet barely remark on the much more destructive and biased viewpoints that emanate from the right whenever a character (even completely original ones) are anything other than straight and white. You also barely remark on the decades of casting where traditionally POC characters are played by white actors on screen even when the characters' racial heritage is integral to their story, examples that still persist to today (from years of blackface and minstrel-portrayals in older media to more recent examples like Ancient One in Dr Strange played by Tilda Swinton, and ScarJo in Ghost In The Shell, come to mind). Your analysis tackles raceswapping of white characters for black or poc actors, even though the reverse is much more pervasive and more detrimental to storytelling and the craft of acting since black/actors already have very few roles in most popular media and any raceswapping for white actors further lessens opportunities for poc actors on screen. You barely remark on the fact that most shouts against any sort of diverse casting in Hollywood these days are indeed heavily rooted in racist, homophobic, misogynist or xenophobic sentiments and rarely actual legitimate critiques against the quality of storytelling. It's hard to accept your take as a centrist position on diverse casting if your talking points skew critical of the leftist takes and are not nearly as critical of the right-leaning positions. Just my two cents...
You’re missing he also gained the power of an Elantrian
As someone who suffers from mental illness, he doesn't write it very well at all. Because real mental illness has the habit of rearing it's ugly head when you need it least in your life. If's not conveniently not a factor as soon as you need to perform in order for the plot to happen. Also, stuff like PTSD makes you emotionally volatile with anger issues. Yet we never see Kaladin or Dalinar or any of the other characters that have to be traumatised by the stuff they went through, irrationally lash out at random people around them. Unlike for example my granddad who fought in WW2. None of them show realistic PTSD in their social interactions. They are perpetually nice to each other at a level that is unrealistic even for totally healthy individuals. The characters are pretty much all one dimensional.
Vin was the character that stopped me reading the books, because she is not only obnoxious but her character progress is utterly unrealistic.
Rlain and renarin?
Worth noting is that these "laws" are tenets Sanderson set _for himself,_ specifically, based on what he has found works best for his own writing. They make perfect sense if you're Brandon Sanderson, and they might be handy if you want to write _like_ Brandon Sanderson or find that you have a similar style. (i.e. you _really_ like very specific hard magic systems.) But they're not going to apply to all works of fantasy, because everyone has their own taste and methods of worldbuilding and storytelling. Brandon has said as much himself, and I think it's important to clarify that when discussing this subject. Case in point, I personally have some issues with the second law, or at least parts of it: I don't like magic having costs, and I think it should be limited in terms of scope and power but not necessarily in application. My approach is to have the basic mechanics of the system be as simple as possible while allowing for maximum versatility and creativity.
Up 🇧🇷❤️🇧🇷❤️
I don't agree with you there are no advantages to some things they are not gray and are just bad on every level the things you think are the benefits are things that were largely already there and in most cases they have been delayed by colonism the consequences are still there so leaving history behind only makes it easier to continue economic colonism I would recommend reading The Divide and How Europe Underdeveloped Africa I think you will find them interesting
Interesting take, but I strong disagree. Raoden goes from a hopeless bureaucrat dreamer who has never been tested, to a leader who has been refined through the fire ... but not lost his ideals along the way.
Glad the algorithm put one of your videos after a i watched something from a different channel. Ill be checking out alot of your play list and am lookinb forward to it. Great channel, you got a sub from me. Thanx
