Yup then you get the affect of rake on shroud/spreader angles, and thus mast bend. Not that I have ever noticed that so much but what does help is increased rake opens up the slot between the main and genoa which can really help on the windy days. To be honest though on the small inland waters were grads excel, and were height and sailing efficiency are everything then the points that you talk about are the most important. Although as you stress, keeping the boat flat when trying to establish this is everything and on a small inland, gusty, lake this isnt always so easy. Thanks for the films, keep them coming
A little Weather helm combined with the force applied on the tiller by the skipper, is actually adding to forward motion. This is over and above the wing effect (pull) on sails. So, weather helm is a must, or else the boat could stall.
We don't traditionally think of the rudder as also generating lift, but it does. Therefore a little bit of weather helm can be a good thing, especially in windy weather when sailing upwind with reduced centreboard
Great explanation. BUT! Please can you try to explain the combination of mast rake and main sail twist?! I have been ignoring the mast rake completely and balancing by increasing the twist in stronger winds using the boom vang.
Hi Alan, thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. I'm not sure mast rake plays much of a part in twisting the sail. Twist is more a result of kicker/mainsheet tension. I'd do a Google search as there are lots of good articles online regarding mainsail twist. Bob
Nicely explained, but to your last point I must disagree....it is not all about going fast, it is about getting the boat to go in the direction you want with a million compromises for speed, comfort, fun, etc. Why are humans so obsessed with this single point - 'speed" ?
@@ckw8456 I would hope that fair play, and enjoyment are also very very high on that 'list'....if one item can make a list ~. Call me sentimental but if someone does something to deter someone else's fun, then they are the losers no matter how fat they go.
@@ckw8456although boat handling comes a close second. Unless you can't keep the boat underneath the rig, in which case speed is pretty much irrelevant 😂

When racing, nothing is more important than speed. Just saying... :-)
