@@mounir9899 it is bullshit but not if you don’t have the proper mind to muscle connection (most people don’t). You have to develop a strong mind muscle connection with your late and arms before you start doing explosive reps, otherwise your form will quickly go to shit. Before doing weighted pull ups Austin did a lot of static and slow pull up work to perfect his form in the movement, so when he does explosive reps he’s recruiting all the right muscles thanks to the foundational connection he built. Most people jump into explosive training without building that foundation and end up with a shit ton of muscle imbalances.
Develop proper MMC first, then move to explosive reps. Apply that philosophy with every movement.

The tip is basically “doing full range of motion”
Also; he mentions slow reps vs fast reps. He forgot to mention that
Both have benefits. but he prefers fast reps
Slow reps > if you can do 10+ reps
Fast reps > if you can only do 3-6 reps
He also mentions Progressive overload, which btw, is not the only way you can build muscle.

    • @chriswatts9227

So I did this last saturday, started at 45 lbs and added 10 lbs until I got to 85 lbs total. I could only do 1 rep at 85 lbs so I started knocking down weights. I could barely do 3 bodyweight rows at the end. My lats have been sore since then although I regularly train pull ups. I'll do it again next saturday. I first started out holding a 45lb plate with my thighs, which is also the best way to do weighted leg raises (windshield wipers/around the world's). I ended up using a nylon strap to better control the length of how low the plates hang. I keep them close and not low. I'm up to 6x45lb plates, had to get creative on hanging them.

Ok that was a long rest, time to get back to it. I was going up slow will try explosive. Going up fast then down slow right? Time under tension?

Thanks very much for putting up this video to educate the proper form on how to execute weighted pull up exercise....personally I used to do assisted pull up on the machine and regular bodyweight pull ups for hundred of reps of course that's way easier to do....but when I saw this video you posted I decided to buy the belt and give it a try and to be honest I felt in love with making it part of my routine and making it a challenge in building that strength power...I've noticed alot of soreness in my forearms and elbows as I go heavy on this exercise lol

I have seen the claim that it is helpful to do reps slowly, though I have also been doing reps explosively. Could doing reps in both of those ways be ideal?

      Depends on your goals.

I would definitely say do both, doesn’t necessarily have to be on the same day, but depends how much time you have. I do a pull up workout 3-4x a week, and went from like 10lbs for 2-3 reps to +70lbs for 4 reps with extremely strict form, I did weighted pull ups at least twice a week, did a lot of front lever training, and whenever I do non-weighted pull ups I almost always explosively pull to my chest or lower, accept when doing chin-ups sometimes I’ll go really slow and focus on squeezing the bicep really hard.

Slow seems too unnatural. Obviously don't move uncontrollably, but the goal is to get stronger.

Great video. My gym has 20lb chains that I do amrap drop sets with as well (chains, then bodyweight, then 50lb assisted). Glad to see I'm doing the right thing, except with baby weight 😉.

If your doing explosive your a ways away from your actual max weight. Doing a mix of both would be more effective. Notice he slowed down when he went to max. I felt like dropping down to high pull-ups helped range of motion and muscle up

I disagree...kind of...Explosive reps is less time under tension....slow reps is more time under-tension. Its best to use a combination of both styles but I see time under tension the more endurance driven and explosive more strength driven gains.

Great video Austin! My routine is 4 drop sets starting with 2 plates. What I was missing was the explosive aspect / I always do mine slow like you demonstrated of what not to do. I'm going to switch to explosive and see if I can get over 2 plates in the near future!
    Thanks again man! Great work!

If your goals muscle hypertrophy would you still recommend this? I go slowly on reps and use 10kg’s for my pull-ups. Hitting roughly 11 reps my first set. Maybe I could include a strength workout once a week similar to this, then the one I’m currently doing. What’s your thoughts?
