Natalie Portman deserved that Oscar with her acting from this masterpiece. Still one of the best films ever made. I wish we get more movies like this that deal with obsession like Whiplash and I Tonya. I really hope Last Night in Soho won't disappoint because I have a good feeling it will be like this.
I read that professional ballet dancers make somewhere around 30-35k a year. Why do they get paid so little? They train their whole lives, push their bodies to the brink of limitation, and have to be perfect and elegant while performing in front of n audience. You would think they would at least make 100k. I know people will say they are doing what they love but, damn, that's no money at all. You might as well work a office job and make like 50k or something. I would be pissed if I was a ballerina and people like Kim K makes millions while doing absolutely nothing!

I Think Aronofsky shows the scary and dramatic scenes in this trailer. Because obviously he is known of his disturbing films, so he focused really much on horror and drama where it involves in the film too. But I love how Natalie performed her acting..
The movie is beautiful. I felt like i am not the only one who feels to push herself towards perfection too much, to the point where peace doesn't seem sweet anymore. I relate to this. Self destruction, overthinking, manipulation, jealousy, fear, darkness i have felt it and it feels real in the movie too. This is a master class movie...
I just finished watching this movie a couple of minutes and I didnt really have much clue what it was doing to be about. I thought it was a wholesome, trying to be a ballerina movie... This movie is the definition of perfection. Please if you havent this is your sign to watch it before someone spoils the ending
I've seen so many comments saying they thought it was going to be an inspirational movie about learning ballet. Where did everyone get this impression from!? Maybe people hear the word "ballet" and think of a gentle, emotive, uplifting movie. This ain't it!
this movie is so beautiful in so many ways. the acting is on point and this story twists your brain to a point of no answer. it’s thrilling to the level of absolute horrifying beauty.
One of the few previews where they show you what happens in the movie already but it still doesn’t ruin the experience somehow!! You literally are given the beginning, middle and end in the trailer yet somehow everything was still fresh watching the film. Love it!
this movie was so breathtakingly powerful, it absolutely blew me away. i've never seen a movie that can represent the light and dark within every single person so perfectly. anybody, literally anybody that says this was a bad film must not have understood it because it was flawless. flawlessly acted by every person, flawlessly filmed, flawlessly directed. just incredible
@@claude.3697 do you ever think about how these comments are going to be around forever? I mean it's weird seeing a comment from nearly a decade ago like the one we're replying to. There'll be billions of inane little conversations between strangers for future historians to trawl through. So many that our comments will never be found in the chaos. We leave comments all over the internet like so much verbal litter, not thinking about what will become of them. I don't think we've all properly realised that this stuff is going to be around forever, because it's so new to us and you don't get any really old comments yet. Anyway. I watched that movie yesterday, my mother didn't like it that much but i absolutely loved it. Perfectly shows how she slowly goes insane, this burning passion that she has and that she would die for. Those little plot twists throughout the entire movie, everything about this was just perfect.
I remember walking into the room as a kid when my parents were watching this and I was so terrified by the "black swan's makeup" idk why it was very intimidating to me and now after so many years, as a teen I feel like it's still very intimidating to me but I want to keep going back to look at it. Now that I understand the meaning of THIS movie, literally get chills.
This movie had a niqqa feeling emotional af. At the end I had a chilling sensation throughout my body where I almost wanted to cry but I just couldn't get the cry out. When the film went into the credits, I was still staring at the screen breathing kinda hard from the climax ending. Never really felt that way about a movie even though I did cry when I watched king kong but I was much younger. Black Swan is definitely a tear jerker. Now I see what the hype was about this movie 5 years ago at the oscars or whatever cinematic award show that was.
@@samibrady6018 That word (especially when intentionally mispelled) is a perfectly valid example of a word (like cocolo, etc.) which people can say with pride about themselves, especially to provide special meaning to the cultural context, but which is offensive when said by most others. In the case above in which it was used, it really isn't offensive but a badge of pride. Edit: corrected a few typos.
@@rockweedgirl yeah, but why use it at all? What does adding your heritage add to a comment. Its not like every person of color shares the same opinion or feeling about this movie.
I too thought Lily was a hallucination or the dark side of Nina I often found myself wondering if Nina was even good or normal at the beginning It was horrific but also exciting to see the perfect pure soul of Nina go dark and insane and the evil that brought the darkness in the corners of her heart out in light *the irony* thrive. It was amazing how her little perfect world and ideal was just an illusion to hide the madness that after was for all to see
Guys, it's not really THAT deep... I've tryied to figure out that movie for like, 3 years now, and now I got it... Nina had a personality disorder, wich is to say, she had 2 oposite personalities inside of herself, but she didn't knew it. She was always living like Nina, the white-swan girl, but she didn't realized that sometimes she did some dark things, for example, having sex with Toma for getting the role... I'm not 100% sure she had sex with Toma, but I really really think so. Cuz at the end of the film, when shes practcing and someone turns off the lights, she sees herself, dressed in black, having sex with Toma, so it problably hapenned, but she just won't accept it. She is scared of her dark side, the same dark side who stabed the ancient ballerina at the hospital. You guys remember her, right? the ''little princess'' one, who tryied to kill herself and ended up in hospital. Nina does stabs her with that nail thing, but she just thinks she didn't, cuz she dosen't want to acept that she is dark. And she brings her inconfidence about herself and her dark side to Lilly, so she starts to really stalk Lilly, like saying she wants her part, and she did, but she was not all crazy about it... And Nina even starts to make Lilly look like shes the one whos trying to ''get'' her, but it's really not, it's actualy her dark-side who's trying to get her. All of those years living with her mom, being dressed up by her mom, having her nails cut down by her mom, and just being treated like a 9 year old girl has got her crazy, and her dark side is hungry, hungry for freedom. Her sexy, woman, dark side is trying to come out, but she won't let it cuz she's scared and her mom keeps pushing her to not embrace that dark side. So, it kinda goes like this: Toma wants her to get her dark side out, but her mom dosen't. So she dosen't know what to do, and finally, when her dark side posesses her at the end of the film, she even kisses Toma. That's the moment when Nina (her ''white'' personality) realizes that she lost her prince to another ''girl''. Herself. Her dark side stole her man, and she wants to kill that side, and she does, by stabbing her image of darkness, sexyness and ''perfection''. Who's that? Who does Nina ''worships'' as being all the things she isn't? Lilly. So she ''kills'' Lilly thinking that she would win the battle, keep the prince, and be Nina again. But she dosen't, in fact, instead of killing Lilly, she kills herself, because, even tough her dark side has a completely different personality, it's still traped in her body. So, when she kills her dark side, she kills her self for complete. Then, at the ending, you can clearely see it's Nina up there, dressed like the white swan, not her evil personality, the one who killed Toma, but the old white-swan Nina, who cryies during the whole act of suicide, because it's not just a fictonary suicide, it's real, she really killed herself so she could stop herself from being dark and taking away everything from her. She couldn't let her dark side take over. So she kills herself, and even feels proud to do so, because the few moments her dark-side could dance free, wore the most perfect moments ever. That's all she needed: To let her dark side flow, and she did, but couldn't let it flow forever... Well, that's my opinion, guys. I'm no film reviewer or anything, in fact, I hope y'all can understand this, cuz I'm brazilian so my english is far from being perfect. Sorry for that, and sorry for being too long too.
Lol, I love how you say its not deep and then say that it took three years for you to figure it out. I believe that it really is a deep movie - not because its concepts are difficult to understand, but because they can be interpreted in so many different ways. For example, I thought that her mom itself was a hallucination, and a representation of the way she feels her true self has been surpressed. I won't go into too much detail for the sake of length, but her scratching would be her attempts to free it, and she finally found freedom in the end, through physically, mentally, and emotionally destroying her barriers in death. Another person in the comments said that they saw the death as a result of the perfection she found as well. No one can know for sure which ideas are right and which are wrong but those who were very involved with the making of the movie. And by saying there's only one right answer to it and calling it simple, I feel like you're demeaning what this film accomplished quite a bit.
konaramen As I can see by your comment, you didn't understood what I said at all. I recommend you reading it again. I had never sad that this movie is simple, and in fact, this is one of my favorite movies ever. The reason why it took me 3 years to understand it, was because at the time it came out I was only 14 years old, and now I'm almost 18 so I can watch this with more ''mature eyes''. It is not a simple movie, but as I said, it's not that deep that a intelligent person cannot get it. You're putting the movie on a pedestal and assuming that it's extremely deep and touching and almost impossible to understand, wich, in part, it is, but happily, this movie is not one of those ''non-sense'' movies where you come out of the cinema room thinking ''wtf was that?'' This is a very deep movie, but saying it can't be understood is just plain stupid. And I don't think her mom was imaginary at all. Maybe Lilly was imaginary (wich I doubt), but her mom? No way! And I agree with you on the part ''she finally found freedom in the end, through physically, mentally, and emotionally destroying her barriers in death.'' Please read my comment again, or not, but please, loose the hate cuz this was just my opinion and I was NOT demeaning the film at all. Thank you, have a nice life. xoxo'
***** No, I didn't said that... Thoma dosen't die in the movie, the only person who dies is Nina, cuz she kills herself. I truly believe that she has sex with Thoma in order to get the part, but she dosen't remember having sex with him cuz her mind ''deletes'' everything that her ''evil side'' does, so she is constantly stuck being Nina and can never be the black swan... :)
Bibicoide Ribeiro I know that this comment is a few months old, but your comment was so idiotic that I figured I'd respond anyway. That, and I keep getting alerts about this post. I said, and I quote, "it really is a deep movie - not because it is difficult to understand." If you can't read, please get off the internet and stop getting overly defensive over someone who disagreed with you pretty politely. I'll explain my point again since you seem pretty slow. The point is, (and read this time) that you didn't make the movie. Neither did I. So there isn't "one right answer" to the meaning of it as far as either of us know. If you can't cope with any point of view that isn't yours, and can't handle discussion about different interpretations of the movie, then you're up for a whole lot of failure down the road. THAT was the point, capital letters to help you get it this time. Simply to be receptive to other ideas outside your own. Hopefully you learn to be less arrogant and more open-minded in the future, (and finally pick up some basic reading comprehension skills!) because right now, you seem pretty disappointing in both regards.
Yes and also lets not forget the magic of the film being that it manages to correlate with the theme of the ballet "swan lake" by in her death she finds freedom and the euphemism of the inward battle of self is finally over when she dies. I cant be certain but it may be a tip of the hat to the 1948 film about the prima ballerina in "the red shoes" where her personal life ends up blurring into the art and becoming a metaphor. Is it art imitating life? Or is it life imitating art? The movie was brilliant its the "red shoes" of our time. I would have liked to see the full performance of swan lake but it's understandable being that Natalie is not a profeasional dancer whereas mora shearer was
The film was intense and depressingly weird in a good way, Natalie Portman's performance was utterly mesmerizing, applaudable direction from Darren Aaronofsky, BLACK SWAN is one of my favorite films!
This film, in my opinion, is one of the greatest movies of all time. Darren Aronofsky DEFINITELY hit a home run with this. In fact, this one is only the 3rd psychological thriller I've seen, first being SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and the second being SHUTTER ISLAND. I'm thrilled how this film can't be considered an art film due to its thick, detailed plot. Also, it's one of the scariest horror films I've seen since THE CONJURING, and that was absolutely terrifying. Who knew Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis could portray such amazing characters. Obviously no one else could play them. Actually, because of their performances in BLACK SWAN, I wrote two characters for them to play in my film I'm writing. There will be a video about it on my channel in a while.
@@mindhunter2278 they have similarities, but perfect blue is about a singer turned actress being haunted by her past image, while black swan is about an obsessed dancer who will go to any lengths to be perfect.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM!!!!! People say that being picked for the "Swan Queen" drove her to insanity. I disagree, because in the beginning before she even got the part of the Swan Queen, she was having visions of her double while on the train to work. Was she always delusional? I think she was always in some way delusional because her Mother always wanted to protect her. Hence, always wanted to check her skin and clip her nails because she was always scratching. Why did she scratch all the time? Why did her Mom always cry and what did the paintings in her Mother's room represent? Why was the mom so pissed that she didn't want a piece of cake? I understand the rest of the movie, just want these questions answered. Thanks!!!
Edgaras Malukas Thanks, but you haven't answered none of my questions. It's obvious the role drove her insane lol. Nevertheless, thanks for the response!
MickyMicky Mike I just had a thought! Her mum was a bit odd so maybe they have some inherited issue/the mum had an issue herself and took it out on her (bipolar/ocd/schizophrenia?) or maybe the stress her mum had put on her initially because of her own failure did something first? I can't fully remember but wasn't her mum a bit like, lifting her spirits and putting her down then lifting them again so having your only companion in life I guess you could say, saying those things and doing that could affect your head badly! I do think it had something to do with the mum! There's my guess :)

Ive been wanting to watch it for so long and I finally did! I loved it
can't believe this was a low budget movie of 13 million dollars, thought it was a hollywood production. My god Aronofsky is a genius.
I just finished watching this movie a couple of minutes and I didnt really have much clue what it was doing to be about. I thought it was a wholesome, trying to be a ballerina movie... This movie is the definition of perfection. Please if you havent this is your sign to watch it before someone spoils the ending
@lacey kelly well I'm around your age and some scenes were inappropriate, but overall I think you can watch it. Just not with you parents:D
Eh people did ruin it for me. But i watched it and it was FUCKING AWESOME.
This movie OMG I didn't knew this existed until today after the mv it connect so much with blood sweat and tears...

Imagine how weird it'll be in the future seeing a comment from 100 years ago that just says "lol", or some petty argument between trolls who have both long-since died.
Anyway. I just wanted to get that thought out because it's been bugging me.

This movie is an EXPERIENCE!
One of the things I love about Aronofsky is that certain scenes in his films are far more twisted and frightening than most horror movies.
One of the best movies ever: dark , deep, psychological.... Bravo Natalie

This film is brilliant! It really gives audiences a more in depth feeling of what the pressure of being a ballet dancer can be like.
I watched that movie yesterday, my mother didn't like it that much but i absolutely loved it. Perfectly shows how she slowly goes insane, this burning passion that she has and that she would die for. Those little plot twists throughout the entire movie, everything about this was just perfect.

It's Been 10 Years And This Trailer Still Has The Most Views In The Entire Channel
Taylor Gang i had the same feelings as you did but i cried lmao i was like 15 back then and it has been my favorite movie ever since
Why did you feel the need to use the n word? So inappropriate.
Sami Brady what about the f word
@@samibrady6018 That word (especially when intentionally mispelled) is a perfectly valid example of a word (like cocolo, etc.) which people can say with pride about themselves, especially to provide special meaning to the cultural context, but which is offensive when said by most others. In the case above in which it was used, it really isn't offensive but a badge of pride.
Edit: corrected a few typos.
@@rockweedgirl yeah, but why use it at all? What does adding your heritage add to a comment. Its not like every person of color shares the same opinion or feeling about this movie.

This HAS to be one of the MOST beautiful and hypnotic films I might ever see!
People still don't understand the true beautiful message that this masterpiece brings to us.
Such a unique movie.
I relate so much to Nina.
I think I’ve seen this movie about 3 or 4 times and Natalie just keeps amazing me. 10/10 performance! Totally deserved that Oscar!
I saw this three times opening week. No regrets. Loved the Perfect Blue references too.
I only looked up the trailer because I love how she tells that little story in the beginning. It's so sad
Except that wasn't actually her dream. That was her explaining the concept of swan lake to a guy at the bar. I get what you mean though
I was going to see it but I never did. I read some reviews and decided against it
She deserves 2 Oscars for this performance.
Mind blowing performance by Natalie Portman !! She truly was perfect
black swan was inspired by Satoshi Kon movie called perfect blue
go watch all his movies especially paprika
I too thought Lily was a hallucination or the dark side of Nina
I often found myself wondering if Nina was even good or normal at the beginning
It was horrific but also exciting to see the perfect pure soul of Nina go dark and insane and the evil that brought the darkness in the corners of her heart out in light *the irony* thrive.
It was amazing how her little perfect world and ideal was just an illusion to hide the madness that after was for all to see
I don't want to sound sappy but this movie was truly artistic beauty
This is such a good movie Natalie Portman totally deserved that Oscar
I would have liked to see the full performance of swan lake but it's understandable being that Natalie is not a profeasional dancer whereas mora shearer was
Masterpiece.

Never seen the movie but judging by the director of this movie Darren Aronofsky.. this movie will be either depressing or weird.
it's both
It is yet it's amazing
The film was intense and depressingly weird in a good way, Natalie Portman's performance was utterly mesmerizing, applaudable direction from Darren Aaronofsky, BLACK SWAN is one of my favorite films!
Its both to the core...
We watched this in my film class and let me say...I didn't expect that
This film, in my opinion, is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Live Action Perfect Blue is looking pretty good ngl.

Bro I love that movie I might have to watch this
I'm coming from Perfect Blue too !
They totally copied it, even their names from mima to nina. And to think arnofsky denied copying it is quite absurd..
@@mindhunter2278 they have similarities, but perfect blue is about a singer turned actress being haunted by her past image, while black swan is about an obsessed dancer who will go to any lengths to be perfect.
The way arofonsky frames his central character, spiralling but forever sympathetic will haunt your dreams for a long time to come
I think I stopped breathing for the last 15 minutes of the film! It was an incredible performance, Natalie Portman has been simply incredible!

Thanks!!!
SPOILER ALERT!!!!! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM!!!!!
Yup but that role drove her to death:)
There's my guess :)
it's schizophrenia. she scratches herself when she's stressed.
Thanks Trish. Question, are you a dancer?
This movie stays with you... Nina's mental transformation fucking haunts you. It's both seductive and terrifying
This movie is so brilliant! One of the best movies i've watched
This trailer does not do this brilliant movie justice!
I literally see this comment on, like, every trailer. The only way you can "do the movie justice" is by practically showing the whole god damn thing. Trailers are meant to establish the basic plot and tone, which I feel this trailer does pretty well. How would you have done it?
Drake Johnson Take a look at the trailer for Civil War. That trailer was amazing and was really well made. Same with the trailer for The Neon Demon. Those are just the two that comes to mind. This trailer was not well made
I thought this trailer was excellent. It intrigues, but does not give away too much of the plot. Nowadays trailers are in fact summaries of the movies, e.g. "Sinister" or "Southpaw".
MUST WATCH THIS MOVIE [a master piece]
