How Did the Boroughs Get Their Names?
The names of the boroughs reflect the Native American, Dutch and English past of the city of Manhattan. Manhattan comes from Native American nomenclature, "Manhatta" and out of that we get Manhattan. Staten Island comes from calling the island "Staten Eylandt," and that was called after the state general assembly in the Netherlands. The Bronx is named after Jonas Bronck, a sea captain who became a farmer and settled in the Bronx. Brooklyn is named after a tiny village in the Netherlands and Queens is named after Queen Borganza, who was the wife of Charles the Second of England.

Correction : Brooklyn was named after Brueken ("broken) Lans( land/lands), the odd
not quite attached towns and main areas on the "long" island..not from a small town in Holland, as your erstwhile narrator reports...Look at vintage maps of the area.
