This is how things go in an opera 😃. Moreover, the poor Commendatore has so little to sing, he is the only main character without an aria. Why shouldn't the basso show what he can when he can?
@@TheJujunick My problems with the Karajan one include the set design, which was very bland and just cast in this ugly greenish/teal. You're not going to find a much better set designer than Zeffirelli. I also feel like the casting is slightly better in the Levine one. Hadley and Moll being the biggest improvements. I prefer Malta as Masetto in the Karajan one though. I think the female cast is more age appropriate as well. Most of the female cast in the Karajan version, with the exception of Kathleen Battle were middle aged by the time that performance came about. Great vocally, but visually, I don't think it works for the story. Not to be ageist or anything. I think Karajan's is a bit better conducting wise. Levine tends to be more brisk, which works well, but there's something about Karajan that just works better for me on the more dramatically tragic moments. Sadly, I think the Karajan version's availability is the biggest reason this one has stayed in memory and bootlegs for 30 years. It's a shame that the lesser Terfel version was the one that got the home video release.
I was privileged to watch it on PBS back in the 1990's and I recorded it. Never got tired of watching again and again. No longer have the tape. So happy I found this link. My verdict: Absolute perfection. It is a pity that so many people are not exposed to opera and classical music. It would make for a more loving world.
assurément le meilleur casting masculin de ces 35 dernières années..Ramey, Furlanetto, Moll, Hadley...le rythme de Levine est très bon..un très grand don giovanni..ça méritait un cd..quel dommage !
Possibly the best live version that I’ve ever seen. Thank you very much for uploading. Just one question though. What idiot - what philistine - gave this a thumbs down ?
I prefer old fashion costumes and decors . The modern scenes look sometimes funny to me . The directors wanted to make operas more accesibile to a larger audiance and are innovating every day .
One time a saw the final act of a Don Giovanni and in the part when the statue say "Dammi la mano in pegno" This Don Giovanni Give the hand to the void I have many questions 😂
Question for Costumes department: Why the servants and Masetto are wearing clothes from like 1760s, while everybody else are dressed according to the mid-1600s setting of the play?
@anntrulove9240 Would you happen to have a copies of the DVD? I am a lifelong fan of Jerry Hadley & James Levine, and would be more than willing to compensate you for a copy. This work needs to be preserved beyond the youtube database!
Si continua a definire questo capolavoro, dramma giocoso. Per me non lo è affatto, anche perché si apre con un omicidio. Casomai è una opera semiseria stante il personaggio di Leporello
Arguably the best piece of art ever produced; Mozart at the absolute height of his powers which by extension is humanity at the height also.
Let's take a moment to celebrate what the Met achieved with this recording. In my opinion, this is the best version of Don Giovanni out there.
I love how Moll's "ahh I'm dying" voice is still as powerful as the others

@@annann3745 Especially when it's Kurt Moll!
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the greatest composer there ever was!
Truly the best recording of Don Giovanni out there.
Yes!
Try Karajan Salzburg 1987.
In my opinion, superior overall. Moll is unsurpassed as the commentatore though, I agree 👌🏼
@@TheJujunick That might be the only reason I prefer this recording.

yea people were pretty loving back in the day when classical music was around
Humans are evolved primates, what else do you expect but animal behavior?
Thank you so much for uploading this masterpiece! This version in particular is what got me into the world of opera! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow best Donna Anna ever to me, singing and act.
I love Samuel Ramey and Jerry Hadley
The best Leporello

The best Don Giovanni I've ever seen - and NOT on DVD ... What a shame!
I agree.
So many years , & now ,

@@FunkySpaceGuy Welcome 🤗 to the greatest art form in the world 🌎🌎. My friend Arnaud Bourbon Amaral 🇫🇷

Carol vaness just great
Really tragic about Mr. Hadley, R.I.P.

Just one question though. What idiot - what philistine - gave this a thumbs down ?
It's probably Leporello after searching out for a ''New Master'' - this time a Philistine Master to replace his feudal one.
Answer: It doesn't matter.
im giving this a thumbs up and one for Donna Anna's bosom being caressed by Don Giovanni
Absolutamente la mejor versión de Don Giovanni hasta hoy. Muchas gracias por postearla!
Met 2011 is better
@@dragoscercel4247 Maybe the production is better, I don't know, but this one is musically unbeatable (till now...). Regards
Highest caliber cast - Mattila is a dream.
Thank you!
9:29 i love this part
Hadley est grandiose..il est très très proche de Alva..qui est le plus grand Don Ottavio de tous les temps.
très subjectif. Moi par exemple je déteste Alva ^^ je préfère de loin Winbergh ou Araiza

I once saw a rendition of the Magic Flute, which was staged in a high school setting. That was the most ridiculous thing ever.

Convenience? Or maybe someone didn't get the memo haha
Siepi, Grümmer, della Casa and Ramey,Vaness and Matilla that is "Don Giovanni " as the best.
2:40:20 Those mini fireworks spoil the scene immensely. Very bad ...
Subtitles? :(
I had uploaded it once with subtitles, but youtube deleted it and after a while, they closed my whole channel. This was in 2014-2015. Sorry....

All about a man whose nefarious deeds are made possible by his power and position. James Levine is the conductor.🥱

James Levine.
