Scotty Kilmer I have a 2001 Toyota celica with way more problems then my 2001 1500 Chevy Silverado for one the celica has a broken speed sensor that is hard as hell to get to with my big hands. the front passenger side wheel bearing is going out and the thing smells like exhaust is somehow getting through the firewall probably because of all leaks and holes in the exhaust system/headers. And to top it off, I can’t see how many miles are on my celica or how fast I’m going because it’s connected to the speed sensor it’s a 5 speed btw.. but my truck runs drives perfect and no smells the only thing is the tumbler is messed up so it takes a little time to start her up. Lol not the same truck. The GMT400 pickups were probably the best GMs ever IMO. They hit the sweet spot between modern and old and are the last with the venerable Chevy 350 in Vortec form.
I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 (only 135,000 miles) (4.8 regular cab long bed 4×4) automatic transmission and it still runs tip top and blows ice cold AC! I did put a little money into a few things when I bought it 4 years ago with 105,000 miles. Brake pads and rotors, tires and shocks all around, U-joints, then put a remote start, tinted windows, Tonneau cover. Idk man despite the low miles it's still a 20+ year old Chevy and still going strong. Not much rust either and I live in Minnesota. I take care of her and she always gets me home.
I needed a truck for the winter [Chicago] last November. I'm disabled so it's important not to get stuck; a truck fits my bill. Found a '11 Chevy Traverse at a car lot. Looked really clean [which it was!!] and didn't have oil leaks that I could see. 125k on the clock, I wanted to drive it before anything else, why waste time needlessly?? Guy got the keys, we jumped in and got ready to go. Engine started right up, all gauges read proper, pulled out and drove. Holy cow!! I couldn't believe I was driving a Chevy!!!! 3.6 V-6 with a 6-speed, this thing got up and moved! No race car, but impressive. Cabin was VERY quiet, no squeeks or rattles.......AT ALL. Drove straight and true, stopped the same. Everything worked and worked well. I bought this Chevy on the spot. I still have to remind myself almost every day that I drive a later-model Chevy. I did put in a new battery about 3 months ago. That's it. Not even a burnt light bulb. Here's the thing= I think this Chevy was BUILT correctly. From day one. The original owner took good care of this truck, you could see the love where ever hands would touch; clean and like new, almost! I really think it's sad what the General has fallen to. That my truck is the exception, instead of the rule. PS My A/C blows cold, too!
Your absolutely right about poor design, but gm is not alone and you should know and state that. Ever since they started increasing the angle on the windshield on cars and trucks for aero dynamics, they moved the evaporator for the outside to inside the car. The increased angle also caused the need for air bags because people were smashing their foreheads on the windshield. New evaporators are made with thinner walls to increase efficiency and so fail more often.
The new ones just won’t last. I like Ford and dodge. Ford is good and the dodgers are junk. But anything is better than Chevrolet. I’ve always had a soft spot for the older rams
I’m with dude it’s ford or nothing. I see way more old f 150s than anything els. Maybe it’s your location but I swear. For every 10 old Chevys I see 20 old fords
I would put the reliability of my 2001 suburban up against any other vehicle lol! Every part if a vehicle's quality depends on what mood the person manufacturing said part was in that day. My suburban has over 400k with all original parts, no complaints here
I have a 2005 Silverado and the ac blows cool for a while, then blows full hot. I believe the portioning valve is broken. Its located behind the dash and will be loads of fun to fix....
My Toyota Tundra developed a leak at 150-190K miles, and I put leak stop in it. Now it requires a recharge about once every 2-3 years. I'll go with the stop leak. Works fine. I do the recharge myself, so it costs under $30 per charge.
Regarding tire suggestions... If your vehicle gets relatively few miles per year, maybe don't buy 60k mileage tires (or more). You may face replacement due to dry rot before exhausting the usable tread.
Now that I recycled everything 😉😂 im an HVAC tech everybody knows nobody actually recovers. But knowing Scotty he very well may have , much love Scotty!
Scotty, I feel for you. I have a bad Heater Core in a 2000 Silverado 1500. Six months ago I had a bad Evaporator in a 2011 Dodge Caliber, it took me about 20 hours to tear apart the dash, pull the HVAC box, replace the core, and put it all back together again... Now I get to do it on the Chevy
Possible blend door not switching ! The blend door controls how much cold or hot air is used ! So the actuator for blend door may be stuck or not working !
My 2005 Chevy Silverado's air conditioner will just stop working but if you shut off the engine and restart it it works fine again and may not do it again for weeks or months. It has done it since I bought it in 2008. I had is to several shops and no one can find the problem. I only have 72.000 miles on it and it has had good maintenance with oil changes every 3000 miles.
My ac compressor belt was off when I bought my Silverado years ago, does ac work if belt put back on? Don't know, Don't care, Roll windows down problem solved
I'll be honest my Silverado has actually never given me any problems and it has 131K miles. Take care of it And it will take care of you. It's simple, just keep up with maintenance.
My opinion that goes for any make of truck anymore. It's a crap shoot. They all make junk from time to time. I will agree tho, more times than not if u just keep up on routine maintenance it'll last.
@@Dennis-sq2nm yea your right. But in the Chevys, a higher trim will last longer body wise too. If you get an LT Z71 trail 5.3 you can have some fun with it and it wont give up on you even after catching air in some mud. I can say that because I've done it lol I had fun with it and I get questions like what suspension I have? Fox? It's stock 😂. But yea you can have fun with em and all but as long as you maintain them they are pretty reliable trucks.
my 2016 high country with the 6.2 was bought back by the dealership after the fourth time in the first year it had to be flat bedded to the dealership from problems with the camshaft and cylinder deactivation less then 30,000 on the truck they refused to pay for the tow each time and i had to sue them to get them to buy it back f u sound view chevy in new rochelle ny
My boss has a ford f350. When new would hardly pull out without falling on its face. Front wheels shook so bad after going over a bump I thought we'd wreck. After taking off emission stuff and spending a couple thousand dollars on suspension and programer it was good until at 100,000 miles the engine needed a $12,00 rebuild. But the a/c worked great.
I had the same issue. I didn't believe them when they told me that it was just low. Turns out whoever was the guy that was supposed to fill the AC on my model in the factory messed up his one job and didn't fill it enough! 2 years later still good
Make sure vacuum hoses are ok. I had a 91 Chevy caprice classic, great car, with problem of warm air from AC. The air diverter was stuck on warm, I changed a 1 inch long by 1/4" vacuum hose and solved everything. Mechanism was actuated by vacuum.
I was a hard core Chevy man but GM put a stop to that by disappointing me with my last 3 GM products. I had 2 impalas and a Silverado and they all had some ridiculous problems. The impalas had to have a new fuel pump that cost around 1000 about every 2 years, all the air vent actuators starter clicking and had to be replaced. All the tire pressure sensors went out along with the wheel speed sensors. The Silverado main problems were fuel pump, transmission and air conditioning.
Well slightly older LS engines are gr8, they new ones are being ruined, never buy anything with direct injection. Not only the fuel pressure is so much higher, they go through fuel pumps like crazy!!
Hi Scotty! As a life long Chevy fan, I have to agree with you about the current state of their truck line. 7 years ago, new fever stuck and I traded a solid, 1999 Silverado z71 with 260K miles for a brand-spanking-new 2013 piece of junk which also happened to be a Silverado. After two miserable years of thinking I just got a "Friday build", I traded into another monumental piece of junk. Also a Silverado. 2015. One day, in my neighborhood thankfully, a situation that required feathering the throttle rapidly confused the transmission control unit to the point that it put the trans into a weird state for driving...neutral. That incident, coupled with the highly annoying EPA influenced shift points which made the truck utterly atrocious to drive in traffic, convinced me to get the heck away from Chevrolet. Now, don't laugh to hard...I found a 2003 Ram 5.9L Cummins 3500 with 75K miles. So far, fingers crossed, it's been solid. Well, except for the cracked dash thing that plagues the gen3 Rams. Keep preaching truth, Scotty! Thanks for all you do!!
evandarkfire Scotty is just looking out for his viewers. If they missed part I, he can still reach them in part II. The rumor is there may be a *Silverado Mini Series - Death by COVID-19 or Silverado, You Make The Call!*
FYI …The 2012 Silverado’s with either the 5.3 or 6.0 with towing package (heavy duty trans cooler and engine oil cooler) are the most dependable Silverado’s since the 2002 1500HD. So if you’re looking for a good used Chevy pickup that’s definitely the year and setup to get. ….You’re welcome 😊
It just depends on the truck my 2006 silverado has 240k miles v6 ext cab and it still runs very strong i do oil changes every 2-4 months and no issues at all
I have a 2014 Silverado Z71, I have 110,000 trouble free miles. I go on four to six off road trips a year with it, I AVERARGE 22.6 to 24 MPG with the cruise control set at 74 to 76 MPH the original tires lasted 86,000 miles. I'm very hard on my truck and it rocks!!! UA-cam million mile Silverado...
One of the next special tools I need is that sniffer. I don't like having to put dye in customer's cars just to send it off, and make them come back when it blows warm again to find the leak. The only sniffer we got is for 1234yf.
Wait for all the people in love with the turbo 4 cylinder pile like my friend bought to start coming to you. My pal argued this engine was great right up untill head gasket failed. Can't fix ignorance or bad engineering.
There is actually a much easier way to replace the evaporator, takes about 45 minutes and then money for parts. It involves taking the glove box out, and then cutting the box that holds the evaporator with a sawzall, removing it and replacing, and then plastic welding it back together. Of course though, he's a mechanic and they all rip you off. If I was this person I would be doing it myself.
Scotty has a video about the 1988-1998 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra. Imo, the generation of trucks I mentioned are excellent! I bought a 1995 GMC Sierra in 1998 with 30,000 miles, standard can, the 350 V8 engine and automatic transmission . I sold it when gas prices got outrageous in 2008. Looking back, I wish I never got rid of her. She was the best truck I ever had, even better than the Toyota Tacoma I bought to replace her with.
My favorite Chevy Truck was a 76 with a 3-speed on the column, next favorite was an 89 Silverado, current Silverado is a 2012 work truck with a little over 60k miles. Fair winds and following seas to all.
I remember a neighbor having a '70's Chevy Nova, and about 2 years after buying it new, the evaporator started leaking. They had it replaced and a couple of years later, that one started leaking. Since San Diego has mild weather for the most part, they just rolled the windows down. On that car it was fairly easy to fix. I know that there were some aftermarket companies that started making replacement evaporators that were well made and they advertised them to GM owners. I also remember the GM R-4 compressor being very unreliable, and some companies stepped up and made adapter kits to use either Japanese compressors, or the old GM 6 cylinder compressors. Hopefully, someone will see the opportunity on this truck and make a better evaporator. 0.6 kg of coolant? My mom's '64 Pontiac took at least 4 pounds if not more.
I had a 2005 Colorado purchased new and had it for 13 years. The AC started leaking at the beginning of the 12th year. Guess I got lucky on that. The original muffler and tailpipe lasted the 13 years I had it. However, the hood need to be replaces 3 times because of rust. The ABS on the truck failed every few years because of bad speed sensor rings.
I’ve got a 2003 with 140000 miles and the engine purrs like a kitten and the ac is cold as ice, however the bad spots are the rocker panels. Surprisingly the frame is completely rust free, not bad for rust central, wv
@@Meg8554 fact. The big 3 all pretty equal anymore. All overpriced with too many damn fancy electronics in em. Mass produced and not built to last like the good ole days.
@@Dennis-sq2nm every auto maker have problems these days. Even Toyota have problmes and they dont want people to fix thier cars at home. They want cars go to the dealer and make money. Plus this generations dont even work on thier cars or even open the hood. I don't why Scotty hates GM when GM is not the only brand that makes okay products lol
Your mistake was not buying a rusty Chevy Silverado Squarebody for $1500 with the A.C. already torn out of it and replaced with a by-pass pulley. A real man's (or woman's) truck.
Used to be able to switch out an evaporator in half an hour with one panel removed. I did it a couple times with replacements from a salvage yard. Now it takes 2 days and the entire dash has to come out. Plus you need a loan to pay for it.
Hey there hi there hello just wanted to say thank Scotty yesterday during your live show you read my questions about my 2000 gmc fuel pump replacement cut or drop tank well I did take the time to drop it and boy it was easy don’t get me wrong it took work but saved some cash been watching you for about two years love the shows keep rocking Scotty thanks brother stay safe and healthy

I want my tires made in a regular country too.
My Yokohamas from Discount Tire were made in the Philippines. 😮
Secondinsight 🤣
Keep up the good work. Your criticism of American pickups keeps the cost of buying used ones down.
My 20 year old Tacoma ac is still so good you can hang meat in it.
My 20 year old Silverado is the same. Both ac and heater works great.
@@mateochirinos9831 Ha! Damnitall Ark. You neutralised the steaming 💩I took on Chevy. Well played Sir. Well played.

Same with my 21 year old F150..... with never a repair.

Hi Scotty, keep safe from the virus and GM's, both deadly.
The truck is deadlier by FAR!
You see more Silverado older and newer than the rest, with original equipment.
Robert Smith Fords too what you don’t see is Chrysler/Dodge
This is true go behind our Ford dealership shop and all the techs have Chevy lol
Is that English
The only thing you’re right about with the Silverado is the price on newer models especially when you start adding options to your specific truck
is it even safe to keep breathing that crap with all the windows closed?
seems dangerous to me
I would put the reliability of my 2001 suburban up against any other vehicle lol! Every part if a vehicle's quality depends on what mood the person manufacturing said part was in that day. My suburban has over 400k with all original parts, no complaints here
Best tires I ever had were Kumho's made in Korea. They were OEM on my Santa Fe. Lasted 65,000 miles. Worst set were Good Years made in Chile.
I have to agree that Kumho makes a great tire. I run them on my 2013 GTI and they run great and are affordable.
I have a 2005 Silverado and the ac blows cool for a while, then blows full hot. I believe the portioning valve is broken. Its located behind the dash and will be loads of fun to fix....
8:01 That Mazda 3 sounds like a steal! I have the same car ... love it and have no problems!
My Toyota Tundra developed a leak at 150-190K miles, and I put leak stop in it. Now it requires a recharge about once every 2-3 years. I'll go with the stop leak. Works fine. I do the recharge myself, so it costs under $30 per charge.
As a HVAC tech, I have to say you should never just keep filling up a leaking unit. Learn to love fresh air or drop the cash to fix properly.
So Isaidtogod - Let everyone borrow $2000 then
Regarding tire suggestions... If your vehicle gets relatively few miles per year, maybe don't buy 60k mileage tires (or more). You may face replacement due to dry rot before exhausting the usable tread.
Now that I recycled everything 😉😂 im an HVAC tech everybody knows nobody actually recovers. But knowing Scotty he very well may have , much love Scotty!
no he didnt..just turned the cam off and let her rip
We recover every oz and log it for EPA. What state are you in?
i love this! scotty working on and demonstrating on a crap car reminds of when me and my granpa use to work on the ford gremlin back in 79
The quality drop off must be insane, I have a 13 year old Silverado and everything’s still running fine
I think '12 and '13 were the only good years for GM.
Damn that was a FUN video to see test after test fail and needing to go deeper. Thanks Scotty!
Thank you Mr. Kilmer, you are the real deal when it comes to vehicle repair.
That applies to any Chevy period,GM too....junk!
Possible blend door not switching ! The blend door controls how much cold or hot air is used ! So the actuator for blend door may be stuck or not working !
man, I was watching this thinking 'that's a pretty new truck'. 67 K and that headache ? sux.
I am 72 old guy I got to say I have learned a lot listen to you keep the good work up lol
Here’s why i will never die before Scotty buys a Chevy Silverado👀🤣😂Stay safe Scotty👍
Thanks Scotty for your honest opinions.
Brian Flores their still junk and last thing u need is 4wd on those things!
my 2016 high country with the 6.2 was bought back by the dealership after the fourth time in the first year it had to be flat bedded to the dealership from problems with the camshaft and cylinder deactivation less then 30,000 on the truck they refused to pay for the tow each time and i had to sue them to get them to buy it back f u sound view chevy in new rochelle ny
Chevy came knocking on scotty's door and said "what about the Silverado?"...
I had the same issue. I didn't believe them when they told me that it was just low. Turns out whoever was the guy that was supposed to fill the AC on my model in the factory messed up his one job and didn't fill it enough! 2 years later still good
Scottys the real deal
Make sure vacuum hoses are ok. I had a 91 Chevy caprice classic, great car, with problem of warm air from AC. The air diverter was stuck on warm, I changed a 1 inch long by 1/4" vacuum hose and solved everything. Mechanism was actuated by vacuum.
Not going to cause a freon leak.

Tires made in REGULAR Countries:
US, Europe, Japan 🤔
I have Hankook tires and they're very good! They make them in US and Korea
It's a stereotype but slightly true to a degree.
mathdirector A hit dog will yelp
I was a hard core Chevy man but GM put a stop to that by disappointing me with my last 3 GM products. I had 2 impalas and a Silverado and they all had some ridiculous problems. The impalas had to have a new fuel pump that cost around 1000 about every 2 years, all the air vent actuators starter clicking and had to be replaced. All the tire pressure sensors went out along with the wheel speed sensors. The Silverado main problems were fuel pump, transmission and air conditioning.
You have to admit though Scotty, you can't beat a LS engine !!
AMEN!!
UA-cam LS fest!!!
Jimmy Mencer they was good engines till they started putting AFM, and direct injection with VVT.
Oh god, GM has actually ascended... they made a truck so bad Scotty had to make a part 2...
evandarkfire Scotty is just looking out for his viewers.

Can't fix ignorance or bad engineering.
redbuick - Lets see how they last 10 years from now. 😂

Here’s why you’ll die *buying* a Silverado
Scotty is AWESOME! Sometimes I watch just to hear him talk.
Rev up your ol' ladies!
My favorite Chevy Truck was a 76 with a 3-speed on the column, next favorite was an 89 Silverado, current Silverado is a 2012 work truck with a little over 60k miles. Fair winds and following seas to all.
Scotty in da nursing home be like “nurse get me my CELICA”
Or, "Nurse, this pudding is a game changer!"
Check the upper left side of the condenser near the bracket. Can't use a leak sensor with airflow or false positive
Scotty, the Car surgeon!
It is very rare for the evaporator on this model to leak, poor to bash the truck just for that🙄
The ozone hole ain’t going away. Thanks for the advice about the GM constant loss refrigerant program.
A week from now: “I was wrong about Chevy”
"It was worse than I thought, the dashboard blew up!"
If someone took your credit card number and bought a Chevy Silverado for you, does it count that you technically bought it, Scotty?
hell of a credit limit you got there, bud.

I’ve got a 2003 with 140000 miles and the engine purrs like a kitten and the ac is cold as ice, however the bad spots are the rocker panels. Surprisingly the frame is completely rust free, not bad for rust central, wv
