A common worry that I hear about a lot when I travel and speak is from scientists who worry "Will I enjoy industry? Will I regret leaving academia?"
I think this question is harder for PhDs than Masters, and even harder for for anyone leaving academia after a postdoc. The more time you spend in academia, the harder it is to make the transition from academia.
I know I worried about leaving academia for industry. I’d spent enough time in academia that I realized it probably wasn’t going to be the best path for me. But I didn’t know anything about working in industry, so I was worried. Will I miss academia? Should I get a postdoc position just so I can think about it longer?
I can’t tell you if you will like academia or industry better. That’s a decision you have to make for yourself. But I can tell you that I was worried about it, and 20 years later, I never regret leaving academia.

You must have a great sense of observation I suppose. I also pay a lot of attention to my academic supervisor's mindset and realize their work behaviors have been long moulded into the world that they are sitting in. More importantly, I don't want to follow that path. You are absolutely right, the eagerness to learn continuingly is very crucial. Thanks for sharing!

you will regret not finding a job at all
You will -- until the first paycheck comes in and you realize that your boss can't call you at 2am or on the weekend and get you to come back to the lab.

These are helpful, even for me as a social scientist. The points about expanding our conceptualization of "job security" are compelling. Academia and its adherents paints a cult-like picture of staying on that track and it can feel hard to "break out" somehow, especially at elite institutions.

Honestly what drives me more to the industry side is the fact that I won't have to grind those 10-15 years before finally getting tenure, getting my first good paying job until my 30's sounds like a lot to me

I finished my PhD a few months ago, I got a job at the largest food manufacturing company in my country, I hated every second of that job, the pay was meager, the shifts where stressful and very tiring, but the worse was the coworkers, I quit and stayed without income for a couple of months, now I got an offer for a position as associate professor in the collage I got my BSc, with Tenure granted after 6 months to a year, and with 4 times the payment that industry could offer me, without nights shifts or retarded bosses pushing me around, the only bad thing is the infernal heat of that region, but I’ll endure. I guess industry is not for everyone

Industry not for everyone. It's tough and hot and very results driven. Not suitable for everybody.
@@envitech02 AND YOU THINK ACADEMIA IS NOT. I mean what you do in academia just strive to get results that can be published nothing more. Everything in the world is result oriented. Tell me if you wont publish papers or bring in the grant do you think University will still keep you. The only thing that matters is what you enjoy to do in the Job. While I agree that Industry not for everyone so is Academia. Every workplace has dark side we just gotta try to dodge it.

I enjoy publishing papers as well as the idea of mentoring graduate students, which is why I like the idea of becoming a professor. It is not always easy to do those things in the private sector in my field (agronomy).
Yes, perhaps an academic career is best for you, and that's great. However, you may want to consider a customer facing role such as Product Manager or Applications Engineer where you might be able to write articles about the products and technology your company sells. And any kind of leadership role in industry will give you a great opportunity to mentor others on your team.
If you work in industry then go to academia, it’s a shock to the mind and wallet.

Regarding your move to industry - I wish you well. Big question with no simple answer, but the big thing I’d suggest is that you define a target. Pick one or two specific areas where you would like to work. It could be a specific technology, or perhaps an application, or even a cause, such as renewable energy or genetic engineering to cure cancer. But a target is important, as it gives you focus. You can research and find people in your target area to speak with and learn from. You can figure out how your strengths fit what they need.

Hi, I am in great dilemma, I got job in one of the multinational company located in country India as a scientist position and withing one month of joining I also got postdoc from the reputed university in Poland for one year. Now, One side I have permanent company Job and another side one year postdoc from number one university of Poland. What should I do?

Great video! We can feel that you're very honest and willing to share your experience with us. I'm about to complete my Ph.D thesis in Algeria and I'm determined to work in industry. Do you think i can do a master's program in Europe and work there, even though i hold Ph.D degree ?
I suppose that's always a possibility, if you want to do a Master's in a different area than your PhD. Are you thinking that is a good way to move to a different country? If so, a postdoc is another approach to relocating. I generally don't recommend a postdoc for people who want to build an industry career, but if it moves you to a country where you want to live, it may be worth it.

It's just a job, man. People quit jobs and take new ones all the time. It's not a big deal. You say "leaving the academy" like that actually means something.
I don't think you know much about academia. It's quite a different career path that you don't just jump back and forth into like other jobs. Most professors follow a very specific path, from PhD, to postdoc, to assistant/associate professor, then achieve tenure. This is decades of buildup and vigorous work. If you leave, it's not like you can change your mind and get right back into a tenured position.

Thank you for this great video, I just finished my phd. I am looking for postdoc position out of India ( my current place), i want to do a job in an industry. Is it possible to get a job in industry from India? Can you please suggest something?
A postdoc can be one of the easiest ways to relocate to another country, and that makes it easier to find a permanent job once you are there. So, even though I don't generally recommend a postdoc for someone who wants a career in industry, that may be your best option now. Companies will generally prefer people who don't need to get a visa as a condition for employment. Can your advisor help you find a postdoc in the country you would like to move to?

Depending on the job it is much easier to get some industry approved certifications and impress the interviewer. For example Oracle OCA and OCP certifications can get you lot of credit to work as a Java programmer. What do you think?
