  • Selecting the correct reinforcement can make or break your countertops (pun intended). As perhaps one of the most underappreciated components in concrete tops reinforcement is worthy of its own video. There are a few cheap and accessible reinforcement options for the DIYer to consider. Which is best for you? Rebar? Remesh? ladderwire? Synthetic mesh? In this short video I do my best to help you decide.

    Thank you for the video and description of the different options. I am building an outdoor kitchen/bbq station. The kitchen will be "L" shape and have a straight run of 3' x 10' concrete counter that includes a 1' overhang along the 10' section. I would like your recommendation of what the best reinforcing would be for the concrete counter. Especially the overhang area. Thank you in advance!

    I am a completely new DIYer and I’m taking on an outdoor kitchen this Spring/Summer. I want to do my own concrete countertops. The kitchen will be under an overhang. Your videos are giving me hope I can give it a good shot. My question is I’d like to put some metal overlays on the countertop. I’d like them to set in the concrete and then maybe use an epoxy to make sure it all levels out. Thoughts? Can it be done? Thanks for your advice.

    Awesome videos! so i have two questions 1. For my outdoor countertop I am making an 1 - 1.5 ft overhang on one side to make a table/bar. What type of reinforcement should i use? rebar or the grid thinner one?
    2. I built my outdoor kitchen with cinder blocks. How do i frame it since there is a gap between the two walls. If i use plywood for the inplace frame, then i have no idea how i will get it out...it will sandwhich between the blocks and the countertop. Thanks!

    Thanks for the video! I am working on an outdoor BBQ, one element is a concrete bartop thats 6x3’ with a base that 6x1’ so each side has a 1’ overhang. How would reinforce this piece and how would you permanently attach it to the base? Thanks for your help!

    Great video thanks! I’m working on a outdoor Bartop that about 6’ x 3’ with a base of 6’ x 1’, the base will be covered in cement board and countertop 1.5” thick. How would you reinforce the top

    Hi liked your video. I tried looking up ladder wire and cannot find it. Where do you get yours? My concrete specialty store doesn't have it. A link would be helpful for that in your description above. Thanks

    Was going to use rebar for my 1.5" thick counter. Still want to, at least for the 6" cantilever portion. But I've never done this before. What should I do? I've got rowdy kids that will be putting their weight on it for sure.

    I am building a 20”x96” poured in place concrete bar top that straddles a 6” wall... What would one use to keep the wire mesh from sitting on the bottom of the form? Would steel lath be an effective reinforcement? The top is 1 1/2” thick on the top and a 1/2” thick at the turn down... Using 3/4” melamine form base...

    I’m about to pour a 4x8 slab for my island top. 1 1/2 thick only. Won’t be poured in place, plan on lifting it out of form, flipped over then set on top.
    I’m extremely scared of it breaking or cracking while I’m flipping it and lifting it into place.
    Thoughts ?

    What would you advise doing countertop-wise for a three-sided cinder block bbq grill with a 4ft opening in the front? I want to pour in place. Do you advise a lintel or would reinforcing the countertop be enough?
    I'm guessing the countertop will be supporting roughly 250 lbs.

  • @russchadwell

    For something weighing 800 lbs and only 2 inches thick, it's hard to wrap my head around how adding bendable wires will make potentially crumbly, or buckling cement more ridged.
    Can you explain?

    For a 5’ x 9’ island, 2” thick, no sinks cutouts, that has a 1’ overhang on one end and 6” on the side, what would be your recommended reinforcement?

    Great videos, Can you tell me what the proper height is for the reinforcement. If I use ladder wire and have a 2in thick pour?

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635
      @diyconcretecountertops1635  4 роки тому

      It would depend on the support underneath. If the concrete is suspended between two pieces then wire in the bottom is best, If it is cantilevered then near the top is better. concrete is weak in tension but strong in compression.

    I am pouring concrete countertops and am planning to use Alkali Fiberglass Mesh that will be about a half inch from the top of a 1&5/8” countertop. I also bought some Hog wire mesh which is 6 gauge zinc plated. My question is ... is this too much reinforcement, if I were to put the hog wire about a half inch from bottom?

    Hello I am working on a cast in place bar countertop of 2” of thickness. Because it is poured in place I have to anchor the reinforcement to an existing wall. I have the concern of anchoring a wire mesh, If it would be enough to resist the weight of the counter, since your recommendation was not using rebar on a 2 inch or less thickness. Do you think is enough or maybe I can use a combination of reinforcement? Thanks for your help! Saludos desde Panama 🇵🇦

    Thanks for the videos, they have been very informative. I’m getting ready to do my first concrete countertop, it’s a 34”x 22“ bathroom vanity top. It will have an undermount sink in it as well.What reinforcements would you recommend? I was planning to use the fiber mesh that you recommended in another video, should I also be using ladder wire?

      90% of the time I use both, They will compliment each other well. A a top that size will be great for a first pour, it shouldnt be too fast paced or tiring. Thanks for watching the videos!

      Thanks for the reply, one more question. Should I pour in place or precast. It seems like pour in place might be easier to get a smooth pin hole free surface.

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635
      @diyconcretecountertops1635  5 років тому +1

      On a pour this size I would probably lean towards a precast top. The reasons being: the form materials will be cheaper (a $45 sheet of melamine vs a $zform kit). If you're not 100% happy you can scrap it and re-pour a precast without tying up your bathroom. If you have little concrete finishing experience then the bottom of a precast top is the perfect place to practice. I wouldn't fret too much about 'bug holes', they're easy enough to fill.

    I'm making a circular concrete disc, 2 inch thick x 32 in. diameter. To get the reinforcing as symmetrical as possible, is it ok to criss-cross the ladder wire pieces? Or would another type mesh be better? The disc will form a well cover, so will be supported only around the edges.

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635
      @diyconcretecountertops1635  4 роки тому

      Crisscrossing thin diameter reinforcement in a 2" substrate will be fine. I wouldnt worry too much about the symmetry, more about the function. Good luck with the project!

    How do use keep the wire mesh from dropping down to the bottom when vibrating the forms?

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635

      Check this video out. The 13:13 mark shows one option ua-cam.com/video/GZ8OEDduUYg/v-deo.html
      Ive used zinc coated nuts to hold the wire up. I wire through the nut and attach it to the mesh. Another option is to add the mesh in when your forms are half full

    • @Itdontmatter69
      @Itdontmatter69 2 роки тому

      Add it at the end, all your vibrating should be done first. Then add your mesh. Lightly vibrate and cover the mesh

    Ciao un saluto dall Italia 🇮🇹 volevo sapere se usi del semplice cemento sabbia e fibra di vetro?

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635

      portland type 2 cement
      30mesh sand
      10mm (-) pea gravel
      alkaline resistant fiber
      There is the common 1,2,3 cement recipe (1 part portland, 2 parts sand, 3 parts aggregate) that will get you in the neighborhood of a decent sidewalk mix. However for a countertop I'd use something closer to a 2 parts sand, 2 parts rock, 1.5 parts portland. That ratio should yield a satisfactory mix. I have a mix ratio included in one of my other videos also. Thanks for watching in ITALY

    • @diyconcretecountertops1635

      Google Translate:
      cemento Portland tipo 2
      30 maglie di sabbia
      Ghiaia di pisello di 10mm (-)
      fibra resistente alcalina
      C'è la ricetta comune di 1,2,3 cemento (1 parte di Portland, 2 parti di sabbia, 3 parti di aggregato) che ti porterà nel quartiere di un discreto mix di marciapiedi. Tuttavia per un controsoffitto userei qualcosa di più vicino a una sabbia di 2 parti, 2 parti di roccia, 1,5 parti di Portland. Tale rapporto dovrebbe produrre un mix soddisfacente. Ho un rapporto di mix incluso anche in uno dei miei altri video. Grazie per aver guardato in ITALIA

    What do you recommend for a 2x5 foot table top. I used mortar and let it harden for an hour. I was told there was no way it would break. As I was lifting up the mold it snapped in half.

    I've got a whole bunch of extra welded wire fencing, the stuff that is pvc coated (like this: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-4-ft-x-50-ft-Black-PVC-Coated-Welded-Wire-Fence-308382EB/205960866). Do you think I could use that for reinforcement? Any issues with the coating?
