The Songo Smelt is a sweet little bucktail perfect for casting out in search of cruising landlocked salmon, brook trout and bass. The fly gets its name from the Songo River in Maine, a short river that flows into Sebago Lake. This was the catch location of a record-setting salmon of 22lbs 8oz back in 1907.
There are a couple of variations for the pattern, one being the addition of peacock herl to the top of the wing. The other noted variation being a green (emerald) tinsel body in place of the silver.

Hardy, thank you. These would work well down east for the brook trout too. Cheers

Nice one Darren! A traditional style bucktail - like that you tie it sparse. IMHO, most people use way too much hair in the wings and the fly looks like a paint-brush when viewed underwater. Find that these (basic) bucktails are very effective when tied to match the small young of the year minnows that are so heavily preyed on by the predators. Being an old foggie, I still tie my streamers with metal tinsel and apply a coat of laquer after... just my preference. Cheers! Hank

Hank, thank you, I'm glad to hear that you like them tied sparse. Good on ya for using metal tinsel. I was gifted a few lengths years ago, but I found I was much too heavy handed with it. I just ended up breaking it as I wrapped it. I might need to pull it out and give it another try. Cheers

Nice fly mate , i think I'll do some on plastic tubes nice and sparse with mirage instead of bucktail and grizzle hackles flat wing style, tight lines 🦈🦈🦈🦈

Darren, very nice fly! I also l also like to keep my bucktail streamers sparse. Now if I could only master the nice color separation you get on the bucktail. Back to the bench to practice. Cheers!

Steve, thank you! That got me thinking about a similar fly I tied a while back with the same colors but mixed up the colors in the wing. It turned out not bad, but the separation in the wing helps give the fly a little more realistic look. If I find it I'll post a pic on the community tab. Cheers

Chimo, really nice pattern. I like that "sexy shad" color combo, so do the fish :o) There's a streamer on the cover of the Orvis Fly Pattern Index I have. Same colors but in a feather wing with a red wool tail. Blue inside of shorter yellow feathers over white bucktail. Peacock herl topping. Body and rib the same, ditto on the jc eyes. It's a striking streamer. I never found the name of it, I wonder if its a variation of the Songo Smelt. Cheers.

Chimo Joe. I had a feeling that you were describing the Supervisor streamer and I looked up the book cover and confirmed my suspicion. I have 3 volumes of the Orvis indexes but they are a binder format not the book. The Supervisor is a classic as well. Don Bastion tied one in his streamer video years back. Cheers

@@PiscatorFlies cool you have all 3 volumes, mine is the 1990 Complete and Unabridged. I looked up the Supervisor after your reply. I saw Bastion's from Streamers 365, his has a beard. I did see a Jim Watt video listed as Bastion tying it but it was a "teaser" of a Black Ghost I think. But the most informative was from Rotary Fly Tying dot Com here on youtube, titled Supervisor, Supervisor Bucktail, Supervisor R.L.S. ( that was a Ken Abrames style flat wing )
The RFTdC host ties all 3 styles to suit the different types of waters he fishes in. The feather wing was just like the Orvis cover, very smelt - like profile imho. Very cool wing technique on the Bucktail. I wish I could give you a link but that's above my capabilities, so I think it deserves a look at, if you have the time :o)
      Thanks Darren, cheers
