    I like how so many comments are all "this is punk" or "this isn't punk" when the original goal of punk was for people to play and hear music that they wanted to hear and not be ostracized for their preferences. Now, so many "punk" fans are only concerned about being viewed as a true member of the culture. If you really took punk ideology to heart, you'd play/listen to what you like and acknowledge that everyone has different tastes. Punk was a way for social outcasts to be comfortable with who they were, so why is it now about casting out those who aren't like the rest?

      punk isnt for posers its for real misfits you cant be part of mainstream culture like most of these pop punk cultures are mainstream. being punk rock is about being a rebel... going beyond being yourself. and being ok with it. pop punk is for people who think they are that but really attract mainstream culture. nobody likes fucking rancid AND fall out boy. or NOFX AND all time low. people dont know the culture now. ya know

    a lot of people on here saying punk is easy, well, that depends on the punk you listen to. If you listen to leatherface and their dueling guitars, it's still probably basic stuff to some, but it's a lot more involved than green day. and then you have bands like propagandhi who are taking it to another level entirely. All in all, this is a good lesson for a kid just starting out with his buddies in the garage. Hope he took it in

    @xLinkinPark1994x,
    You do not, "have to," do anything you don't want to do... music is an art form... there is no such thing with it as; "Never," or, "Always." However, that said, by learning the inherent structure of anything you do enjoy a great deal, you become wiser on many underlying levels. Essentially, the more you know the rules... the more you can break them. If you have no clue, well then... you are clueless, (as the old saying goes).
    Thanks for watching,
    Andrew Wasson

    I haven't seen all your vids but this is a bit of a departure from the stuff I'm used to seeing you do., Good stuff! I'd also like to mention that another common lead concept used in this style are octaves particularly between the 5th and 3rd strings. A lot of punk bands also use that well known Chuck Berry lick. Both of those are found all over Green Day's music. The former in songs like "Holiday" and the latter in songs like "J.A.R.".

    @nielsfoxie there is a difference between double stops and two note chords.. two note chords are usually power chords (5ths) and double stops are to notes played at the same time which arent usually chords

    Even though there's not really a formula, I would say most Punk leads are minor pentatonic, which really makes things really simple for writing leads and even some good riffs.

    I was watching this right now, I think everybody expected something a lot faster and reckless, even if it's coordinated. I dug the way you put the riffs you recommended together in your presentation, but jack the tempo up with stuff like this.

      For me, this sounds like that side of The Offspring everyone knows, the mainstream side after Smash, instead of stuff from their first album or stuff from Bad Religion's early albums or Suicidal Tendencies. Those aren't catchy in the pop sense, but they hook a lot of us.

Now I know the name of it I can start to do some research on the internet and learn some double stop shapes.

    I totally agree; Green Day has been my favorite band for a long time. They're really trying to branch out of their typical punk style simply because people don't seem to like punk as much anymore. Music changes over time. The Beatles changed their music with the times, as did the Rolling Stones, and every other famous band. However, I will remain a punk rock fan for the rest of my life xD rock on everyone.

    I'm actually joining a Punk rock band now. Green Day to me is not Punk Rock anymore like they were when they started out, and I'm not going to be doing a lead role in this band, I'll be doing Rhythmn. We are going to be doing more Old School Punk styling like Lugnut in their song Good Times, so I was wondering if you could make some more lessons on Punk Rock guitar styles, showing the more "Old School" ways of playing Punk Rock. If you actually read this, thanks bro!

    Billie Joe said that he doesn't consider his band as punk rock...but we're talking about real musicians and that's why he couldn't stay punk rock forever as they were on the bi
    begining of the band.But if you listen dookie insomniac and kerplunk you will understand that Green Day was punk rock band and if they hanged they did it to bring new music for the people and they did it well.

  • @NothingToSeeHereSir

    Punk mainly consists of repetition, power chords, and barre chords, and other elements ass well. I'm pretty sure Green Day IS considered punk, maybe not their newer stuff, but they definitely were. The problem with this genre is too many people think that is a band goes out of the limits just a hair they aren't in the genre anymore. You have to be different to get noticed, so you have to step out of the boundaries, or push them a little bit, and that's what Green Day did. Get over it.

    • @lawrencemichaelis5908
      @lawrencemichaelis5908 7 років тому

      NothingToSeeHereSir. Green day is pop punk, not straight punk. Nothing against green day I like them. But they have a pop song structure. A lot of newer so called punk bands fall in the pop punk category.

      they were punk rock because three chord rock dissapeared in the late 60s and early 70s. and became oversaturated with prog rock. ramones brought the 3 chord and fuck you attitude to punk.the songs are 'poppy sounding' but is a ironic sort of attitude they had about it and to play very fast

    Should have pointed the kid in the direction of a really crappy punk band like Reagan Youth, complete with piss drunk vocalist. Or perhaps something decent like old school Bad Religion and/or Danzig/The Misfits.

      How are the misfits decent? Horror punk? Really? How's Reagan Youth bad? misfits are sellout cunts in flashy bondage gear and perhaps a vibrating dildo in their asses, poser shit at it's finest. If you can't say something worth saying, stfu or switch to techno. Ponder this, how many quotes from the misfits have benefited you personally? have you killed any girlfriends recently? they're just repackaged rebranded metal crap. it's like that maiden/acdc crap, fear of the dark and endlessly talking about your boner; if you go to somebody and tell them you're afraid of the dark, you deserve a spanking, have something to really fear, as it were. in what world is that cool or worth writing a song about? I hate raisins but you don't hear me writing winy ballads on the subject.
      My personal take on punk quality is trying to replace any word with "cheese". If it does not loose anything of it's meaning, it was probably crap to begin with.
      PS: I'm only ranting as I see a lot of regurgitated crap being sold to kids (just like religion and politics) by the music industry, before they get any chance to make up their minds about what is objectively valuable and what isn't.

      I only threw the misfits in there because of Glenn Danzig, I honestly don't give a crap about them. Yeah, Reagan Youth had some real meaning behind it. It was all drug induced satire and sarcasm, Dave Rubinstein was wacked out of his mind 90% of the time and he was always slurring his words. I'm not saying Reagan Youth was crap but they weren't much better than the bands you claim to be trash. I definitely don't consider myself punk and I really could care less what someone else thinks I am. I am a musician and I do write music, that's all I have to say.

      SMAAAASHTV I'm not claiming that some bands are trash, I am pointing out why they are trash. I don't mean to be disrespectful but taking let's say ACDC, you would be hard pressed to find a song which is not about sex, say for the one with lightning. But if you think about it, the only people obsessed about sex are wankers, no? You crave for what you don't get. On the other hand, there are bands like NOFX which have wonderful lyrics like "music should be created from devotion, not ambition, not for fame" and don't get nearly as much attention as they should. The music industry has turned this form of art to crap. The definition of kitsch is an artistic endeavor with only shape and no substance. Art should be the mirror of society and if you look at what survived from the last 2000 years, it did so as it was relevant. I just wanted to get this point across.
      I wish you all the inspiration and the luck in the world.
