When you can see the stars they are indeed amazing. Very clear and you can see constellations quite easily. The issue is that clear nights are so few and far between at this station it makes stargazing difficult. I see whales more often than I see stars! Lol
Thanks for all you guys do! I’m sure many people know this kind of work is essential for mariners as well as forecasting but it is also very beneficial to pilots as well! I have done all my flight training in the lower mainland so having remote forecasts available helps me get a better idea of the forecast at remote points along the coast and straight. Keep up the essential work!
Pilots who fly into Klemtu and Bella Bella use our weather reports all the time and they all have our direct phone number so they actually call the station from time to time to get the weather at that exact moment. Cloud heights can be a real problem when you are trying to fly between all the peaks around here and especially when flying at lower altitudes. I am glad we are able to help out when we can and keep aviators safe as much as mariners.
The funny thing about temperatures 6.5c on the coast feels even colder than say 6.5 c in the interior on British Columbia or even say Ontario I have met many people that have come from Mid-Canada and say that it feels much colder in BC closer to the ocean than where thy came from. The same goes for heat 30c on the coast feels hotter than 35c in the interior BC I think that it has much to do with the moister in the air . The key word is "Feels Like ". I work as security, my current post is 95% outside ,when I look at the forecast I look of course for rain, sun ,snow ,winds but more importantly I look at the" feels like" on the weather network webpage . I say this in every Video on this channel, I would love to do this job , I have been searching for many years for such a job, where I could do my work on my own or with a small team and be a little isolated. The quiet with mostly just nature around is what I have wanted to do, I looked into forestry like ranger type job, and you pretty much need a university degree to even apply for such work and well honestly I couldn't afford that. . But years later (as of a couple of years ago) I thought of Lighthouse keeper jobs , couldn't find where to apply. It wasn't until I stumbled on these videos that I learned the proper name of this job, so I searched using the proper name and missed out (probably by a day or two) on the application process the process was supposed to stop around March 29rth 2024, it ended last week so it wasn't up very long before it was pulled. I am watching for another one to pop up. This work is much like my Job as security, checking on things writing the weather conditions in case something happens the weather can play a roll like for slips and falls or accidents.
Yes, the application was removed for a while. The response was actually quie overwhelming. There is hope it will be up again and you just need to keep checking as it will be posted in the same spots.
Thank you for saying. I love what I do and am glad to be able to share with others. It is such a great and unique job and an experience. If there is ever anything you need or could use then just hit me up on Facebook and I will always share.
@@AndrewSzeto very cool. Each of the stations are so photogenic and with the right skills can look amazing. Do you share your work anywhere or just official CCG channels?
I will for sure do that. You can check out my Snow video on Entrance here: ua-cam.com/video/POVKKH-jNes/v-deo.html but it is pretty light compared to what we would see at Boat Bluff.
Something isn't adjusted with your audio correctly. I had to turn up my volume to 75 out of 100 to hear you normally when normal is usually around 35. Question: how do you get the proper amount of sleep when you have to record all these different measurements every three hours?
Sorry, audio is not my forte, could be I was too far from the camera when filming or something. There are 2 keepers at each station and so each one is responsible for their own weathers. I am responsible for 330, 630 and 930 and the other keeper is responsible for 1230, 1530, 1830 and 2130. I go to sleep at 1900 and wake at 300, a full 8 hours for me no problem.
Brandon Eick I was thinking the same. It seems the coast guard is slow to integrate technology to the lighthouses. Not all stations have internet access as some keepers have to supply their own.
Head office does require a hard copy of everything we do and so yeah, it is written down for the most part. That said, something I kind of missed in the video is that when we do all the temperatures, there is a site we go to and enter all the data in there for environment Canada who uses the data to help with forecasting. Our daily weather reports are entered as data but not by us, but by the person we are reporting to. All that data is also automatically forwarded to environment Canada.
@@robinp4040 Rumor is that all the stations will have a basic form of internet for submitting reports and doing other official type things by the end of 2021. Getting a system for all the stations that are in some pretty remote locations has been a bit of a challenge.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Spence, you can be an astronomer! Night sky in your place might be astounding!

this is totally awesome man! love what you're doing! I'm one of the photographers/videographers for coast guard. love that you're doing this.

Andrew, what you do is pretty cool too. How did you land that job?
Andrew Szeto Agreed with the others-you have a super cool/unique job as well! Do you have a link to your work online you could share?
Fantastic inside look at weather reports! Keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks Robin, glad you found it informative.
Wonder what Boat Bluff looks like during Winter.
Well, we do have a big snowblower on site to be sure we can clear the helicopter pad during those snow storms. In 6 months I am sure we will see!
If some sort of snowstorm rolls by, you could use that for a video and what you do during those times

@@BCLighthouseKeeper I see. Thanks. What about the 0030?
@@robertlaird6746 for some reason they don't have a 0030. Never asked and it actually works out pretty good for both keepers.
I’m surprised you still use a ledger instead of some type of computer program to record the data.
