It wasn't this easy being a lighthouse keeper back in the day you basically had to stay up the whole night an make sure the light didn't go out an people went crazy from loneliness an solitude

I've got a nice little pair of spring-operated PCV cutters that I carry around in my tool bag. I find that they work beautifully for trimming pesky shrubbery from work or habitable places I like to occupy. They fit in my back pocket and will cut though a branch or piece of PVC pipe-their intended use-up to 1&1/4" diameter. They cut clean, square and flush which is nice. Having them allows me to get into a grove of blackberry/thistle bushes along the side of the highway after they've already been picked over. Not as industrial as you needed on chore day, but anytime I walk a path I am not empty handed and it's easy to stay on top of. Just remember to clean the moisture from the organics because rust is the enemy of hand tools everywhere.

So if you live full time at a station is there any rules against having livestock? I was was at a lighthouse with guided tours in the US and they showed me where the light keepers would keep chickens and hogs and a garden. The tender came only once every several months, I’m talking between 1890s and world war 2 era, basically all your canned and preserved goods, tobacco, hardware, clothes etc you could order from a catalog. The ship would bring you your goods and you’d turn in your catalog for the next delivery and your pay docked. But because they didn’t use helos but a tender ship you couldn’t really move fresh food this way, so the light keepers or their wives would have gardens, chickens, hogs etc if the station had room It doesn’t look like you could have a hog pen there, but I feel four to eight hens could be kept there comfortably

I just subscribed! I found you on the Reddit AMA, after beginning (again) a search on the requirements of becoming a keeper. I have lived in Michigan for most of my 35 years, isolated for years now (love it) and I've had a fascination with the possibility of becoming a keeper for several years now. I have a cat that I love dearly, so I'm not sure that's allowed so I guess I won't be a keeper any time soon, but maybe I can learn enough to become one in the future. I hope to learn a lot from your channel! Also, as a side note, I am a professional composer. You seem to produce your videos very well and perhaps any BGM is unneeded, but if you're ever looking for someone to provide a nice soundtrack for your future videos, I can cover anything you need. This is really neat to see, great video! I've been considering applying for a career as a lighthouse keeper and was curious how much of your own stuff you are allowed to bring. Looked like you could pack quite a lot. I have an electric piano, a drumset, and guitars and whatnot I'd like to bring with me if I were to go live at a lighthouse, so I could keep up with my music playing while living and working there. Do you think that would be manageable? And how much actual downtime do you have during your day typically?

Interesting. When I was a younger fellow, I worked several years as a "professional" mover. Packing, loading, driving, unloading, unpk and set-up. As well as office moves, air shipments, overseas, the whole bit. So in this case, obviously you had to move another keepers' belongings. Did the other keeper have to deal with a similar scenario, dealing with another keeper's moving detail? Just seems like you somehow got the $#!tty end of a stick here, having to deal with move out of someone else's belongings, and then eventually move-in of your own. I'm sure it's not that much of a big deal, and I'm guessing it happened that way due to all of the Covid crisis that we all had to endure. The amount of stuff you showed in the vid, looks like about 20 minutes work for a standard move, but I guess trying to stuff it carefully into a chopper would require some extra care, thought, and effort. I have prepared and shipped many air shipments, but none directly into a chopper. I'd enjoy a challenge like that.
