  • Former school resource officer Scot Peterson is on trial for allegedly not following active shooter training during the Parkland school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018. Peterson - dubbed “The Broward Coward” - has been criticized for his actions after surveillance video showed him remaining outside the high school while shots were fired inside killing 14 students and threes staff members. Peterson faces seven counts of felony child neglect, three counts of culpable negligence, and one count of perjury. He and his defense team believe the once “dedicated officer” did nothing wrong.

How many times will we and the court have to witness the brutal murder of these children. Listening to the screams after the first volley of gunfire was enough to make me feel sick and stop watching. I cannot imagine the families, friends, and first responders who have to continually relive this experience.

I've been thinking that people who defend easy access to semi-automatic rifles should get the "oh so you support killing students" treatment, but I'm usually too civil for that. Calling those weapons "assault rifles" is appropriate because they're very rarely used by civilians for self-defense. They're too bulky for daily carry, but they're just portable enough for a shooter to get close to their intended targets and still have the element of surprise when they open fire. It's insane that we don't treat semi-automatic rifles differently from handguns, requiring extensive background checks and advanced weapons training certification before allowing someone to purchase such a high powered, high capacity, high rate-of-fire firearm.
But that's just me being a responsible gun owner who actually understands and respects firearms and can tell the difference between different classes of firearms, while still fully embracing the Second Amendment giving us the right to defend ourselves, hunt, and shoot recreationally, and even have a decent chance of defending against foreign invaders or tyrants. I must be some kind of leftist for even suggesting common sense gun control.

No body would have ever brought them in! Why, you might ask?? They didn't want to lose them because some were heirlooms! If someone brought anything bad into the school, it was a Buck Knife! Those, they got confiscated even if it was in your pocket and you forgot! You got it back at the end of the day, or if it was a 2nd offense, the principal gave it to one of your parents with a stearn matter of fact warning.

As an American- 1st I am ashamed we are even having a trial about a school shooting to begin with, but this man NEEDS to be held accountable for his inaction that day. He stood by while children were massacred because he was too afraid to do his job-WHILE HOLDING A GUN- while teachers who didn’t have a weapon ran inside that building to protect those kids. I completely understand the charges, and why they were brought. If it were your children in that school being massacred and they could have been saved by his actions wouldn’t you also want him to be held accountable for hiding behind a lamp post while listening to your kid scream for help and others screams of agony and fear? It’s now up to a jury to determine whether he is liable for his disgusting inaction. Let’s hope this jury does the right thing, unlike the jury for the shooter.

This case exemplifies how sociopaths in positions of power deflect and blame those that cannot fight back. This is gaslighting on a public level. One may argue that Peterson's positioning (one of visual containment) was optimal given the brevity of the assault and uncertainty as to the exact position and number of gunmen in the moment. This was a tragedy with one villain, Nik Cruz.
Directing hostility towards one of the few people on Earth who has been tasked with protecting students for chump change for a long time is idiotic. If this case is being driven by the families of victims, please understand that you have been politically gaslighted. There are many correctable issues that contributed to this event. Peterson was not the problem. He did not have the benefit of clarity that hindsight brings, and in my opinion positioned himself optimally. If he were a coward, he would have run away. The real cowards are the ding bats pushing this case. The lack of empathy and victim blaming is disgusting. This should have never been brought before a Grand Jury.

I would have went into that building straight away and would see the carnage. He stood in one position while school monitors without guns ran towards the gun fire to help.

@@IneffableGump Peterson's in the moment tactics were satisfactory but he alone could not have made enough of a difference to change this horrendous outcome. His vantage point was the only intel that ANYONE had. Perhaps in the movies an ominscient character with superpowers could've made a bigger difference. But in those crucial 5 minutes Peterson secured a line of site of the East egress of the building (closest to the parking lot and street that Cruz came from). Peterson simultaneously maintained a visual line of sight of the entire walkway South of the 1200 and 1300 buildings. His role was to protect the whole school to the best of his ability, not guess wrong and sacrifice his advantageous position.
Peterson is one of the victims. The hostility directed towards him should be 100% directed towards the murderer and nobody else.
It is not right to belittle, castigate and publicly humiliate a person who did his job to the best of his training and abilities. Even if we are under the delusion that we would have done much better.

I agree with you that Mr Peterson is not guilty of any crime.
What could he do besides trying to understand what was going on?
However I disagree in the idea that Nikolas Cruz is the only guilty party. Cruz should have never been sent to that school, ever. His mental health issues are so well documentated it’s beyond reason. Worst. Gun laws absolutely are responsible for a mass shootings. Nowhere else do they occur like in the US. Why anybody would be able to get a gun like this? Certainly they are not good for hunting, another barbaric hobbie btw… Nowhere else do kids have to receive training for mass shootings at school. At most they are trained what to do if/ when there is some earthquake.
I don’t even think police as a whole is guilty. The idea that having police with guns can prevent a mass shooting is guilty.

The prosecutor is basically doing a recap of the entire shooting. You really have to watch the whole Parkland trial to get a real feel of the intensity of what happened and also how fast it all happened. He is talking real slow to make it seem like Cruz was super slow moving around and aiming at targets. I think he is doing it deliberately to make it seem like Peterson had a ton of time to go in there and "get him". To me it should be clear that with all that commotion, gunshots, dust from ceilings etc, that Peterson would not have been able to see Cruz and that shooting randomly down a hallway wouldn't work and that with the firepower that Cruz had (he was able to shoot Hixon and other students from across the hallways) that Peterson would never even have gotten a chance to be close enough to make any difference. In all honesty he would just have been killed right away. Cruz was an experienced shooter, won awards in his ROTC classes, had a high powered weapon with multiple rounds. I cannot believe the Judge is allowing the audio from first floor. Peterson wasn’t even near the building yet when that happen.

2:37:04 …currently wondering why on earth these charges have been brought against this man…what a waste of time and resources.
The killer has already been convicted.
The defendant in this case did nothing criminal.
Also…I almost fell asleep during the prosecution’s opening…the defense attorney is so much more personable and if I were on that jury, I’d be listening hard to him.
Having said all that, my thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives to Cruz that day…IMO…Peterson shouldn’t have been criminalised, forcing the families through another agonising trial 💔
