Well here it is as ALOT of you have requested the long awaited restoration of my worn out pillar drill or drill press if you prefer. You might want to grab a drink and a snack as this one is a big one filled with all manner of techniques, tips and tricks.
As you all know i usually spend a lot of time writing a big description of what I've done in the video but as this episode is so long i simply would have enough space here so what ill do is give a brief description and let the video do the talking for itself.
So basically, my drill has seen better days, the bearings are worn, it looks tatty and the return spring setup is missing so that was my first job, first fabricating the housing to hold the spring and then cutting the slots and fitting a retaining tab to stop the spring from freely spinning inside and once that was made i started stripping the drill down to component form.
Once in component from all the paint was removed using paint stripper, i could have used the sand blaster but with the amount of parts and how hard the paint was it would have been far to time consuming and would wear my blast media out fairly quickly so i opted for the paint stripper and wire brush method and as you can see it worked a treat.
I then masked up al the parts and gave them a coat of etch and then high build primer to proved me a good thickness to flat back to hide the rough casting texture of the parts, once that was done i painted the parts with a bright red 2k paint to match my Snap-On boxes .
While the paint was curing i set my sights on the rusty hardware, I washed all the oil and grease off first and then sand blasted them back to bare steel in preparation for bluing, I used the hot method for this in which i heat the parts to 300- 400 degrees and then dunk them oil this burns the oil onto the surface and leave a lovely black oxide finish that is highly durable.
Then it was simply a case of installing all the new bearings to sort out the sloppy quill and re-assemble all the parts and of course finish of the build with a nice custom data plate sporting the RRC logo :).
so anyway Enjoy and please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed this video :)
See you all again soon

Worn Out Pillar Drill Restoration - JUMBO Episode
I have the same model, 30 years old now and I'd judged it about ready for the bin (with a bit of wobble, and that same spring missing). Your video may have given it a stay of execution as you show details that encourage me to try and tweak it before deciding on its fate. Thanks for posting. 👍
''So, my only choice is to MAKE A NEW ONE'' *a terrifying roar echoes in the distance* ....He has awoken....My Mechanics cometh!
Haha love that comment! I hope you enjoyed the video :)
@@RRCRestoration Always do^^
That was an incredible journey from the beginning to the end of that restoration!!! You did an outstanding job on every part! It looks great and that quality of work will last for a very long time. The red paint job looks beautiful.
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it :)
That drill press look like the little brother to mine which is 3 phase and has one step more in the belt "transmission".
Great job and I must say that these kind of clips are educational, inspiring and motivation. Just pure sounds and no silly track..
I wouldn't dare use that now, I'd have it in my living room to show off 🤭, another great video
Thank you, Glad you like the results :)
IKR...it belongs in a show room
Behold ! Another living room morphing into a man cave ! lol
@@beakittelscherz5419 🤣🤣🤣
Man, you are a legend, perfection is your business.
Wow, thanks! i appreciate that :)
This was among the BEST tool restoration videos I've seen! I have a VERY SIMILAR, maybe slightly larger drill press to clean up and get in shape. I can now say I'm familiar with ALL components of the drill press to which I give you MANY THANKS!!! I was a little apprehensive about replacing bearings should I need to but now that I know how these are put together I have a clear picture. I also picked up on many other details you used on your restoration. You REALLY went to town on this!!! It is MUCH APPRECIATED!!
Thank you so much for your kind comment it means alot :)
Seeing other channels disassemble stuff = boring as heck.
Seeing RRC disassemble stuff = fascinating.
It's in the video editing.
Brilliant as usual, the poor old grinder has been overlooked again
A really educational restoration and as always a fantastic finish love your content 👍
Videos like these are way RRC is my favorite restoration channel. Well done and thank you!

That... Looks. Gorgeous!!! Damn the data sticker was an awesone touch too love that youre putting your logo on things. Never know, maybe one day something you restore might migrate all the way over here
I just love watching your videos. You go right down to the smallest detail. Thank you for them and keep up the great work.

Wonderful job. Very satisfying to watch.
Sweet, an old school "Really Random Channel" video. 🤩 These videos were the reason I subscribed to your channel back in 2017. 😊
And another great restoration mate. cheers. 👏👏👏

@@RRCRestoration I'm always enjoying your videos. :)
Ficou mais nova do que quando sai da fabrica, parabens
What a brilliant restomod. As I was watching I thought to myself "This would look even better if it was red". You definitely made the right choice. Thank you for showing people that with some hard work even old equipment can be made new. Its far better then throwing history into the trash and buying shotty cheap equipment from (I won't say the name, but it starts with C and ends with hina). Thank you for another great video. Much respect 🙏 🫡.
Class work man.
Next, that bench grinder
Thank you very much :)
NO NO NOOOOOOO
The bench grinder stays as is....
It would be sacrilegious to put bells & whistles on earth SKETCHY 😡😤🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🥸
You no doubt take restorations to another level, great job, it looks flawless. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much! :)
One like is not enough this eork was awesome , you deserve one million likes ,thanks for share your skills
Thank you so much 😀
Absolutely cracking job! As new, looks lovely, works great. Couldn't be happier. I was looking forward to seeing this being done. Cheers!
Thank you very much! really glad you enjoyed it :)
I have a few machines that could do with new berrings and re-painting. This video shows me pretty well everything I need to know to do the job. THANKS.
Glad my video could help you out :)
I love the time-lapse paint stripper videos, just the fact that the otherwise -hard-to-remove paint surrenders so easily.
Realy Nice! Tanks from Brazil!
Thank you :)
wow looks and sound like a completely new and more expensive machine
well done mate
Very nicely done. It will serve you for many decades now. You need to install a light to help you line up those very small drill bits to the center punched dimple... Thumbs Up!
What a fantastic episode! Nearly 42 minutes of epic restoration! I'm sure this is the same as my dad left me - once I get my shed finished, I'll bring it up and have a look! I might have to find out where you got the belt from!
Absolutely excellent work, my friend! 🍻🤘💜
Excellent as usual!
Thank you! Cheers! :)
Another cracking job Mr RRC
Brilliant, a job for the weekend, thanks!
SUPER... Amazing restoration!!
My one and only complaint is I really like that "old industrial tool" shade of green, but excellent work as usual.
Race red always works, top job 👍
Thank you :)
Amazing job as always !!! Already looking forward to the next video !!!
Very good job !!!
Great job on the restoration!
I love all your restoration vids! I have this exact drill press with that same annoying wobble, now I have no excuses no to fix it! 😆
Thank you very much, glad you like my videos, and good luck fixing your drill it makes it so much nicer to use :)
Brilliant restoration great job Mate sounds better now !!!.
Thank you very much :)
excelente mantenimiento, queda listo para operarlo, y no debe presentar falla.
Good Job...
I have one of these...
One day perhaps...
I really enjoy your restoration videos. I like your clean work space and the effort you put into your projects to make it perfect. I have to admit, this one was a bit scary. As the only piece of machinery I think the quill return springs are evil.
Very nicely done. Excellent video. Also, nice paint job.....
Very interesting, great job, looks and sounds like new!
came out very nice..
Great work. It looks fantastic 😍
Better than new!
Thank you! :)
Really enjoyed the video
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Super job. Thank you for the video. I will make my one blue :)
Nice job 👍👏👏
Outstanding work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video nice work enjoy the video thanks sir for that 🌹👍👍👍
Great work!!!!! Love from Italy.
Thank you very much! :)
Good color choice. We all know "Red unz ar fastah".
Love it! :)
Great restoration just wish you painted it that crinkle green again .
very good job!
Very nice restoration, it needed it 😁
Glad you liked it! :)
Amazing how much gunk had accumulated all over the insides the drill.
I know, i was amazed when i saw all the sawdust inside quite a fire hazard if the motor had started to overheat.
Now that it's painted red, I suppose it drills more than ten percent faster!
Nice work looks good in red, you know everybody was waiting for the spring to fly across the room or maybe that's just me :)
Im a little late but Im here and Im excited!!! had to find the time to watch this all in one go! :P yeees!
Great content.
Great Job!!!
Thank you :)
Sweet resto job enjoyed your posting :-)
Glad you enjoyed it , thanks for watching :)
That nitromores is dangerous stuff
Nice job !!!

Ottimo lavoro, complimenti
Grazie :)
As a 40+ old fart I'd still come and work for you for free just to be able to learn from you. Respect!
Great work as always bud!!! :)
Very nice and clean..i like it 2 much..🥰🥰
Thank you so much 😊
Good job.
Thank you! Cheers!
think those return spring caps are universal one size fits all , the one you made is less sharp and a lot less ilkely to schred up youre palm during instalation though
supprised (but then again it seems to be a budget machine to start with ) there arent any small sleeves or tules to protect the wiring where its fed through metal holes , this would preven scafing of the wiring and causing shorts over time
Ok david blane with the wrench. I see you 😂
Haha i couldn't resist
Next video perhaps the bench grinder
Very nice job. I subbed.
saludos desde Uruguay!!!
Once again another disgustingly great restoration. Your sir are a marvel.
Im not 100% on it being red though, i thought you might have kept the old workshop tool hammered green vibe
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed the restoration
Excellent vid, RRC. Really clear with great detail shots. Can I ask where you source the spares? I noticed that you put on a new plastic guard and mine is broken. Also how did you remove/replace the chuck?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. MOst of the parts can be sourced on ebay for these drills. The chuck is a taper fit all you need to take it off is a ball joint separator fork and itll pop right off.
I to mi sie podoba. Jam mam taką samą i wiem już co z nią zrobić. Pozdrawiam.
muy bueno el video, podes hacer un video corto , de como hiciste para sacar el mandril? ,fue lo unico que no vimos, es muy importante , saludos felicitaciones
Hi, friend!
I congratulate you for showing the step by step of restoring the drill. I was looking for why I need to do the same thing with mine but I didn't dare.
I make a query. What KOYO Bearing model did you use in the column?
I congratulate you again.
Greetings from Chile
Just a note but hot blueing is heating, dipping in oil and then removing it quickly and catching it on fire. There are tables of what heat and how many cycles for what colour.
Excellent job. one question though. Will the heating of the parts for hot bluing, not have taken the temper out of them, making them soft? I watch a lot of knife making videos and this is always a concern of theirs. They fully harden them then temper them back at about 200*C, so I'm just wondering if taking them to 3 or 400*C will soften them too much. This is a query not a criticism, as I said, I'm a " You Tube Specialist ".
its beautiful now xD may i ask u didnt put any grease
Thank you, What do you mean by i didnt put any grease?
That method you used on a few of the parts (heating them up and dropping in oil) you called hot bluing but I don't think that's what that is. I don't actually know what it would be called but the hot bluing I know that is used in gunsmithing work is quite different! Amazing work though, and major respect for the amount of work put into these videos!
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed the video i think the method i use is more of a DIY hot bluing method rather than the full on professional way that gunsmiths would use.
Love the video of the pillar drill restoration. I have one of those in tool pillar drills my motor keeps jamming when you start up so you have to twist the chuck to get it going and when you put a load on it like drilling metal it does the same . Do you have any idea what it could be. Thanks Trevor
i love that old things get restorated but i love the old school color not the red it doesnt fit it
Would it possible for you to describe how to replace the chuck?
Very cool
Thank you :)
This is awesome. Stupid question from a novice, but what determines when you sand blast vs use a wire disc?
I love these videos and when he was cleaning the feces not to disturb the quel mailing marks! Everyone loves a legit scottish accent!
As always a wonderful restoration. I have a couple of questions. What makes you decide to use a paint stripper versus other methods. You could have used Deox-C your go to method to get surface rust off, yet you chose to use the wire brush. What makes ya chose one over the other assuming the results are the same. Thank you as always for working on the details.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the restoration. For the paint removal i decided to use paint stripper due to the size of the parts and how hard the original paint was it takes less time and is more time effective than standing at the blaster for hours. As for the rust removal i chose the wire wheel as the rusting was only on the surface and the wire wheel has the added benefit of polishing the surface while removing the rust so again its a big time saver being able to do 2 jobs at one i hope that answers your questions?
Hey🙂. Great restoration. Did you use the wirebrush on the collum aswell? Didnt show in the video. Currently restoring a similar drillpress. Just a little larger model😅
You didn't bother filming the little remove-play set screw that rides in the keyway of the quill. If it's the crappy rectangular design one you can only remove when the quill is removed, I replaced that with a normal one turned down to keyway size so I can fine adjust the pressure on the quill and remove the play.
Well that was awesome my friend. Loved it . . . can you please tell me the specs of the bearings you bought? I have exactly the same machine and it has some play in it.
Nicely done as always 👍
What kind of oil do you use to quench those parts in?
Thank you, In this video im using some spare engine oil i had but just about any oil works just fine.
maybe stupid question, but how do you find the right bearings?
