i like how things happens on his videos, like the girl at 7:01 going out of frame at the same time as him, or this young ma'am throwing out her daughter
I have first generation GR III, and it is still an amazing camera. I got an old Rolleiflex which belonged to Daido Moriyama, and found that he had become a user of the GR series of cameras. I found mine used on a local classifieds site, and paid only 10,000 yen (about $100) for it. I took it out a couple of times, just playing around, but when I reviewed the images, I was pretty much blown away. These are great cameras, and you don't need the latest or greatest to get good images. At least my old GRIII never locks up.
Kai! That same thing happened to my GRii. I was able to fix it after some thorough research in countless threads. Take out the battery, switch the SD card, then replace the battery. Hold the play button on the back, instead of using the on button on top, to turn it on. Hope that works for you! Cheers!
There are a few cameras of this size that are game changers. GRII, GRIII, FujiX100, Lumix LX100 II, etc... Even the crop of mirrorless cameras in the last 3-4 years has allowed photographers to capture people in their element without alerting them to their presence.
I'm in love with the thing. Second camera I've ever pre-ordered (first being the 2013 GR). With the firmware update to v1.10 it focuses in darkness as fast as my old GRDIII and GRDIV (insane considering the sensor size difference) and I get perfectly usable images at 1/15sec ISO6400 with a grain/noise structure that looks almost like film. I sold my GR and GRDIV to fund this little monster.
The Ricoh GR lll guess the color tone 5-6 steps to high in auto whitebalance, especially in bright conditions. It has no built in flash. Other than that, it's great.
Kai, my GR had the same problem - if you feel like taking it apart, it's not too bad to remove the lens and give it a jiggle, which seemed to fix mine. Of course, I also need an excuse to buy the GRiii...
Yeah, I don't know if it's intentional or just an effect of cost savings but many models with similar extending lenses "unhinge" instead of stripping the gears or ruining the assembly all together. So disassemble, look for the issue and reassemble. Or sell it as-is for someone to fix it...
I’ve taken my GR2 apart. I was having a problem when starting up, it would start up and then about half the time immediately retract the lens and shut down as if I had pressed the power button a second time. I took it apart thinking that maybe the lens was “binding” on extension. Didn’t really solve the problem but found workaround and resorted to starting camera by hitting playback button, then hitting focus button to extend lens. Works every time. But I still bought the GR3 😉. Autofocus is definitely better and I like the menus a bit better. The GR cameras are my cameras that can go anywhere. I can use it anywhere without drawing any more attention than someone taking a snap with a phone and that’s important. Someone elsewhere mentioned that their iPhone pics are just as good as the GR, if social media is your final output, sure I can see that logic. I’ve worked a lot of iPhone files for family(kids) and a well exposed iPhone pic in good light is remarkably good and better than no picture at all but no match for the GR3. The GR3 also stands up well to and fits in well with my other mirrorless gear.
Since 2019, there're many cameras on the world, but I believe that GR3 is still most tasty one of kind. I bough GR3 street edition. It's quite a thing.
I love hiking through nature and wildlife & landscape photography. I'm using a secondhand Nikon S9900 with a 30x zoom. WiFi and GPS, plus a pop-up flash and swivel screen in a pocketable size is why I love it. I think the newer A1000 might be a good upgrade, but it lacks geotagging.
I dropped my gr2 3 times in streams. Totally Didn't touch it for at least a week each time. Crossed my fingers, put the battery back in, turned it on and not a problem. Works like a charm. Its a tank. Will be getting 3 soon.
I like the TG5 for my carry everywhere camera. The only downside is how useless it is in low light. Otherwise its feature rich and tough enough for daily carry. Though I still recommend getting the silicon case and putting in a nice cloth pouch to prevent scratching.
I'm a big fan of fewer lens elements, would love to see more modern optics with fewer, more complex elements. Generally means a better T stop, and 'microcontrast' which is just less photons being refracted away from their path.
I have been debating rather to get the GRIII. Last one I had was the GR digital II, and it dead similar to ur GRII... Been waiting for ur review ever since the camera came out, and now I am 95% sure I want it.
I now use Ricoh GRII as my only camera and love it... My only issue with is is autofocus slow ... will probably get GRIII ... this camera is so good and so compact
@@kezzatube45 Oh god that's terrible news, why did nobody tell me! Did anybody let all the major camera manufacturers know as they're all still making them???
If you are still in London and want to repair the old camera check out Camera City near the British Museum. The guy has done work for me before and got me out of a few tight spots - it's maybe the last funky/weird camera store left in London (Mr Cad notwithstanding!)
Should I go for the Pentax mx-1, a leica x1 or a Ricoh grii , or something else? I'm right now looking at cameras in the 300$ category. I do really love be the format of the Pentax mx-1 camera. The brass body and the screen. But does it fall back to much because it's smaller censor?
Hello Kai, great video on the GR3. I'd like to know if you had some overheating issue with the LCD. Mine is damn hot after just 20 mins of use. I'd like to know if it's a known issue on this camera. Best regards. Jeff
Great review. It's interesting to see your experience of the camera's lock-up. The same happens with my Olympus and I've seen similar complaints about other cameras too. Remove the battery and everything is fine. I wonder whether bare-metal firmware software developers do not know properly how to handle synchronous I/O.
Nice Speedmaster. I’ve noticed you with quite a few different watches over the years and all pretty classy. Do you keep changing watches or do you have a bit of a collection?
Awesome Review, as alsways! One Question: How much does the lens design differ from its analogue counterparts regarding rendering and colors? I really love the analogue models but would love to try out the digital one.
What a great camera. IQ, good autofocus, IS, and lots of functions. I'm glad you didn't say it had bad autofocus like some have said, because I feel, like you, that it's quite good. I only disagree with you on one point. The battery. I can shoot hundreds of photos without it being depleted, which my Fujifilm X-T30 cannot :)
Was going to ge the Ricoh GRII until they discontinued it. I ended up buying the Fujifilm x100f and am really enjoying it. Might still look for a used GRII
I had the GRII....and won't be bothering with the GRIII. I replaced the GR with a Sony RX100 VI and this is what's better with the Sony: Amazing AF that is insanely fast and accurate, so much better than the GR. The IQ is really very close in practical terms. The Sony shoots 24 FPS and has FAR more custom features. The Sony shoots both wider and far longer, 24mm to 200mm, which means it can handle everything the GR can't. The Sony has a VIEWFINDER! It works great and shows you exactly what you're doing. It also has a flash that can be bounced. In PRACTICAL terms the Sony does much more than the GR, lands more keepers and is far more flexible. In certain cases the GR will do better because of the larger sensor, but try BOTH and you'll see that the Sony is excellent and just much more camera, even if you don't care about great 4K video! I enjoyed my GR, but the 28mm lens and lack of viewfinder along with so-so autofocus made it less than ideal. The Fuji X100f is actually nicer to use, but larger. The Sony will tick all of the boxes...and gets you a very sharp 24-200mm range.
@Kai W My GRII got jammed like at the end of the review but I was able to get it repaired at a Ricoh Pentax service center, I used the Beijing one because I was in the area. So all is not lost for the GRII!

The lens is much better on the GR. The sensor the same. But from there... a totally different camera and handling experience... The GR is a true pocket snapshot camera. The Fuji is neither but maybe more? Apple and oranges...
Hey Kai, I'm looking for a camera that has a decent depth of field setting whether my whole body, head to to, is in the frame, or just my portrait, or if I'm just focusing on an object. More like blogger photography where the person is posing on the street and everything behind them is out of focus, or object in the foreground in front of the subject are also blurred. get the GR II ! its awesome
Me three
I like the idea of the Ricoh GR because it keeps the formfactor of the point and shoot film cameras. Simple, one lens, small body
A pram pratfall at 6:19 and a video bomb at 7:00. Those alone made this video be worth it.
I absolutely love my GRII. If I could only have one camera, that world be my choice. That said, the iii looks pretty sweet.
The Ricoh GR lll guess the color tone 5-6 steps to high in auto whitebalance, especially in bright conditions.
It has no built in flash.
Other than that, it's great.
As a non-pro and a Pentax user, I am keeping my GRii for a long time. Yes, and I rarely use video mode in this camera.
I am using GR ii now and very happy.
