It's nice to see my teachers son demonstrating during Taikai. Always good to see him doing kata's in Shinbukandojo and training with him & also the gentlemen sitting. Good vid!
Just backing up Thatmartialartists, I remember a guy cut down a robber in self defense a couple years(?) back. The robber bum rushed him and recieved a 4 inch deep cup across his body and almost taking his hand. It stopped him on the spot and bled to death pretty quickly. No charges against the guy with the sword. I'm more of a European sword guy by far, but I do enjoy that story.
@airwolf511 It is targeted as a slice across the stomach. As the top 3 inches or so of a katana is extremely sharp, it would cut through most cloth and flesh.
@Peekingduck wow he's grown alot. i saw his old videos when he was just a teen, he was really good with the spear too. i notice he moves with the sword like the old samurai from back then. maybe from 1920's or earlier. pretty cool.

Any places to learn Shinto-Ryu in the States? I've been interested in a while, but I haven't really found a kenjutsu school that seems legitimate. I wanted a koryu school like this one, any ideas?
katori shinto ryu calls it ryoto? that's interesting, I normally hear it referred to as nittou jutsu in other lineages. ni means two, doesn't ryo mean both? or does it mean two also. either way..
Well, he certainly knew about it since Katori Shinto-ryu was founded way before he was born. He even expressed his opinion on kenjutsu teachers of the Katori and Kashima shrines in his book "Gorin no Sho" (the book of five rings).
ZentetsukenVII Musashi didn't invent two-swording entirely. He was just the first well-known guy to make a style entirely devoted to two-swording--though even that is somewhat incorrect, as Niten Ichi-ryuu also involves training with one sword and even with a jo. And Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryuu is pretty much the oldest surviving sword school in Japan. The school itself is considered a national treasure.
ZentetsukenVII no, it's the other way around. Musashi is a badass and all but seriously he was a man not a god. It is not good to make superheroes out of mere men. It was said that Musashi knew a little bit of the TSKSR style but didn't really think much of it. I believe he even mentions fighting both Katori and Kashima men at some point. Now run along and watch some anime.
was that first guy drunk or just has a flu?? He seemed wobbly and uncommited, just going thru the motions. If that isOtake s son his faher woud kick his ass for that

Yes, we do, but we'll be posting them up in dribs and drabs over the next few weeks, as I get time to process them.

Shinto-ryu is probably the most dynamic form of kenjutsu among the other kobudo.
What about Jigen Ryu?
@MestreInvisivel it's normal there. just to avoid catching anything. saw it all the time when i lived in japan
looks nice
Just wondering, but why do that do that movement where they have the sword blade back and then they swing back at the opponent. 3:16
Hey, hey, where is it, hey, catch it, nope, haa, see it ? Hey, hey, not here, here is it, nope, hey, ha, see it ?
@falcomera22
Yes, his youngest son Shigetoshi.
nice
Also, the Japanese man doing the iai-kata in the above clip is the son of Katori Shinto ryu headmaster Otake Risuke; Who taught Phil Relnick.

Dom Vito I just found out there is one in Boulder , CO.
Oh, a kata of the gokui no iai. Nice one!
Do you have more videos from the embu taikai?
Just a humble question, would the first cut on 1:16 do any damage if you re wearing clothes?
Pretty sure he wasn't referring to anything in the video.
He mentioned BAMBOO and MASK.
is there a whole video?
@kogai yea prob cheers mate :D
tenshin shoden katori shinto ryu uses a wakizashi with the katana?
Yes, it's called ryoto, meaning "both swords".
is that his risuke otake son in the beginning??
@jordouellette Thanks :D
You watched that POS clip of R Lee Ermy Katana vs. longsword didn't you? There are other vids debunking it.
What's the name of this martial art?
RCRD100 Katori Shintō Ryu. It’s a koryu that has been passed down for 500 years. What was taught then is still taught now.
@nicamy8988 I think you mean kendo.
is this in the us?

I wish I could ask Musashi what he though of something like this..
Well, he certainly knew about it since Katori Shinto-ryu was founded way before he was born. He even expressed his opinion on kenjutsu teachers of the Katori and Kashima shrines in his book "Gorin no Sho" (the book of five rings).
I read somewhere that Mushashi studied TSKSR for some time.
Azurel777 no TSKSR studied him! O.O!!! lol

oh, silly me you answered my question before it answered, lol. yeah ryo to means both swords and nitto is two swords.
It's much more difficult then it looks.
i mean the style
I don't think there's anyone out there that doesn't enjoy TSKSR.
