Not what happened. This man wasn't a "professor". La Sapienza is a public University, meaning that every position in the university is subjected to a public exam. It has to be published on the national gazette and everyone from everywhere can participate if they have the required titles. A lot of professors in Italy don't do it like that, since this takes months and months of examinations and a lot of money to organize the exams for one single position. What they do is they allow you to teach while you are doing a PhD, so that, once you are done with it, they create an internal calling that is tailored around your titles, so that you still have to compete with others, but it's a bit easier for you (as their student and professor) to keep your already established job. "ALLOW" is the key word. They don't HIRE. He was offered to teach as a "training" during his PhD on top of the money he was already receiving for his research. The VERBAL agreement was he'd teach 100 hours for 4000€. Another important thing to know is that it is ILLEGAL for PhD researchers (formally still students) to teach in substitution of professors. So they couldn’t make a contract for him. So there was no contract, he did that as a training given by the two professors that followed him with his PhD research, and before he was let go, he only did 60 of the 100 hours, hence why La Sapienza refused to pay him. So in civil court, the judge said he'd be granted the 60h payment (2500€) plus the money from the sanction for violating the terms of the verbal agreement without a valid motivation.(These laws exist because we have a lot of people that use illegal employment to not pay taxes for the employees) After that, the Sapienza has another process going on against the Nation, for breaking the law on hiring and firing professors and that is gonna cost SOOOOO MUCH MORE. EVEN BETTER THAN THAT, the institution tried to make the two supervising professors pay for the money it owed to Ruggero by not paying them their wage and the TAR (The Administrative Tribunals that supervise these kind of violations) sanctioned them with 3000€ more for each professor, because this is clearly a breach of contract. So yeah, so much more than just 4000€

As far as I know he did not have a formal contract. He was asked to teach by some professors, but the University found out and asked him to leave. The University also tried to sue the professors who called him because they did not follow the correct hiring procedure, but iirc the Uni lost there too. The compensation is low because it is exactly what he was to be paid (4000 euro for 100 hours of teaching, he was asked to leave at 60 hours). He may not have been liked due to his past, which is horrible, but he also didn't have a formal contract. The law protects the employee in this case, so he was to be paid according to the university's word

Italy has different salaries than us. An engineer gets 40000 dollars a year, a doctor 65000, a lawyer from 25000 to 100000, the average person 30000 but with taxes and all it's a lot less. So 4000 is double the monthly salary of an average person, of course it's nothing considering he was a researcher but got no money and that lawyer cost (especially good ones). But I think he's happy to have won the case, considering he doesn't really need the money, he made bank in the past with his career since he was quite famous and he works as an analyst, he just fought cause it wasn't fair

Not what happened. This man wasn't a "professor". La Sapienza is a public University, meaning that every position in the university is subjected to a public exam. It has to be published on the national gazette and everyone from everywhere can participate if they have the required titles. A lot of professors in Italy don't do it like that, since this takes months and months of examinations and a lot of money to organize the exams for one single position. What they do is they allow you to teach while you are doing a PhD, so that, once you are done with it, they create an internal calling that is tailored around your titles, so that you still have to compete with others, but it's a bit easier for you (as their student and professor) to keep your already established job.
"ALLOW" is the key word. They don't HIRE.
He was offered to teach as a "training" during his PhD on top of the money he was already receiving for his research. The VERBAL agreement was he'd teach 100 hours for 4000€.
Another important thing to know is that it is ILLEGAL for PhD researchers (formally still students) to teach in substitution of professors. So they couldn’t make a contract for him.
So there was no contract, he did that as a training given by the two professors that followed him with his PhD research, and before he was let go, he only did 60 of the 100 hours, hence why La Sapienza refused to pay him.
So in civil court, the judge said he'd be granted the 60h payment (2500€) plus the money from the sanction for violating the terms of the verbal agreement without a valid motivation.(These laws exist because we have a lot of people that use illegal employment to not pay taxes for the employees)
After that, the Sapienza has another process going on against the Nation, for breaking the law on hiring and firing professors and that is gonna cost SOOOOO MUCH MORE.
EVEN BETTER THAN THAT, the institution tried to make the two supervising professors pay for the money it owed to Ruggero by not paying them their wage and the TAR (The Administrative Tribunals that supervise these kind of violations) sanctioned them with 3000€ more for each professor, because this is clearly a breach of contract.
So yeah, so much more than just 4000€

In plenty of US states there is a limit to damages, so even if a jury recommends 10 bazillion dollars, the law might limit that to $250k

As far as I know he did not have a formal contract. He was asked to teach by some professors, but the University found out and asked him to leave.
The University also tried to sue the professors who called him because they did not follow the correct hiring procedure, but iirc the Uni lost there too.
The compensation is low because it is exactly what he was to be paid (4000 euro for 100 hours of teaching, he was asked to leave at 60 hours).
He may not have been liked due to his past, which is horrible, but he also didn't have a formal contract. The law protects the employee in this case, so he was to be paid according to the university's word

Italy has different salaries than us. An engineer gets 40000 dollars a year, a doctor 65000, a lawyer from 25000 to 100000, the average person 30000 but with taxes and all it's a lot less. So 4000 is double the monthly salary of an average person, of course it's nothing considering he was a researcher but got no money and that lawyer cost (especially good ones). But I think he's happy to have won the case, considering he doesn't really need the money, he made bank in the past with his career since he was quite famous and he works as an analyst, he just fought cause it wasn't fair
