Hi ... from Australia ,, I started work at Raleigh bicycles ,Faraday Road ,Nottingham in 1959 in the Sturmey Archer section,I remember spending all day grinding 'burrs' of tiny machined washer parts and threading the chain attachment ,,,all day every day ... Thanks for the video now I know where they fitted in the assembly.. Oh by the way the making of ''Saturday Night and Sunday Morning '''was being filmed when I started ,,, check the opening scene to see what life was like as a 15 year old boy..!! thanks again
You are great RJ. Still referring to many of your early videos. I have told many people about your channel. Keep looking forward to you new stuff, but the library you have is fantastic. Thanks so much.
RJ: You never let me down! No matter what Bike mechanic procedure I need to know, I can find it in your vast collection on UA-cam. This time you had the exact Hub I needed to work on. You are an amazing resource for garage bike mechanics. Thanks. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Seen your past videos and never get tired of them. At the risk of sounding geeky, i appreciate the engineering of the inner workings and especially the planetary gears video. Thanks again..sorry for gloating but went for a ride today in California, 72 degrees.
Hey RJ! Thank you so much for these videos. I've been able to restore a similar hub that came from my grandmother's bike, thanks to you. I've been restoring the whole bike and my grandfather's as well, can't wait to have them finished and looking perfect.
Enjoyed and learned I took apart 3 coaster brakes hub and packed them solid with car grease they seemed to work ok but did’nt know about hi temp grease😂

Hi Australia again .... I migrated as a ten pound pom to Australia in 1968 the three jobs I had in the uk was ''Raleigh bicycle industry ,,Stanton n Staveley steelworks and Gerard soap works on Wilkinson street Hyson Green at 15 (Raliegh)my wage was two pound/eight shillings a week.. Thanks for time n reading !!!
There's a special hook wrench to tighten the spanner nut against the brake arm. Since there is no locknut on the drive side the play adjustment is made with a proper cone wrench when the wheel is installed into the dropouts.
I just watched this video from 2015. I was wondering if you have ever worked any Bendix coaster brake hubs? I live where Huffy bikes were originally manufactured and I can remember all of those big, heavy cruiser bikes had Bendix brakes. Thanks for all of your informative videos btw.😉
Sir I talked to u before about a bike issue and u helped me out with your advice ,however I ran across another bike issue I need help with hopefully uncanny help out with I have a bendix hub I can’t fit into the shell and it was assembled in the add but when I got it it was disassembled do u know the trick on fitting it in the shell?
Johnny Oil port for adding oil. With the greases I used in overhauling the hub, I am guessing it probably wouldn't need to be oiled. On the 3 speed hubs, oil would be necessary.
hello, can i put grease in the whole parts? i mean, soak them all and assembly again. i think the excess would leave the interior somehow and keep it like water proof.
Repair. My friend`s bike sometimes brakes and sometimes he had to pedal back long way to brake. Solution: look at 4:25. In his right hand mister Bike Guy he holds the end of the sleeve that consists of 2 round fingers. Bend them a little outwards. Done, the brake will work now. The sleeve takes the 5 rollers backwards and then the rollers are powered by themselfs. When the fingers are worn, they don`t take the sleeve and rollers back.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Wow! Quick reply. Thanks a lot. I don't think so. I bought it new one year ago and I think it's working just fine. There's just one thing I'm afraid of. I often go down a long slope just braking with it as I don't have front brake on my bike. In case it overheats could this permanently damage the brake/hub and its performance?
Hello, have a Sturmey Archer RX-RC5, 5-speed with rotary shifting and coaster brake... Can not find any technical, service or maintenance documentation on this or any other 5 speed hub... Wondering if you can help... Need to know how to adjust the bearings properly... And how to adjust the coaster brake.... Not how to tear down and rebuild, but how to adjust... I have extensive experience with regular bicycle hubs and bearing adjustments... but here I don't know how to disassemble to get at the drive side come and locknut... What the torque suggestions are... What grease to use, how often, what to grease... And in general the brake, how to adjust it, etc., it seems to me to be rubbing but have no idea what to do about it... Thanks....!
Ne Pastor try 5 speed might be a closer match to the spacing in the frame, steel frames can be stretched see rj's video :) seen derailuer gears on a bmx done several times when i was in high school,u might need to experment with gear ratios due to the 20" wheel size.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Excellent! Thanks so much for these brilliant tutorials! They are making all the difference for me getting back into cycling after almost two decades and enjoying restoring a vintage Raleigh :) :)
I had the same problem with Velosteel hubs. You probably applied too much grease around the rollers, so the clutch does not engage. Disassemble and hub and clean the rollers, then lube them with light oil. I use chain lube and it's completely fine.
Why have you not use high temp grease for all the components of the hub? The metal is conducting high temperature even on the components that have been greased with marine grease. P. S. Nice job you are doing with all this videos
I did all the steps but the brake is significantly worse! Had the same problem that your bendix 70 had but now my brake doesnt work, can someone give me a tip on how to fix it?
If engaging the brake is a problem during the back travel of the pedals is the case, then do not use grease in the center of the mechanism, where brake shoe and its internals. Only liquid oil.
Hi brother I like your personality you're not a smart ass and in my years working in bike shops there's a lot of smart asses... In my humble opinion you don't just seem like a do it yourself dude it seems like you had some experience at a professional bike shop:-) So I am liking your videos very much and specially your attitude towards mechanical components mechanical jobs at home... Please share if you have worked in the bicycle industry in past if you can..
No, I have never worked in a bike shop. I am actually a computer programmer for a living. But I have been working on bikes for fun since I was a kid. And I have always loved taking stuff apart fixing things. And building stuff.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Thats me, I can't resist taking things apart to see what makes em tick and put them back together again. It's addicting and I have several additions doing this right now, sometimes it can be overwhelming and mt friend make fun of me but oh well

Another great overhaul video!
Very good information. I just restore my old kid bike for my niece. The "Super Granat" coaster hub is very similar to this SA one.
very interesting we learn from your videos tks Karmen

Is it possible to fit multi cog cassette to sturmey archer 5 spd hub
thanks mate! I done but, it was diffucult sensetive adjustment.
my sc slips when i pedal forward. braking is good. internal stuff looks ok. any suggestions?

Sir do u think I should tap it with a punch? It’s a 1959 bendix hub
That ring you took off at the beginning. If that is off will it prevent the bike moving when pedaling
That ring holds the cog on.
What is that little port on the shell that you can see at the end of the video? A hole with a cap to provide lubrication?
Johnny Oil port for adding oil. With the greases I used in overhauling the hub, I am guessing it probably wouldn't need to be oiled. On the 3 speed hubs, oil would be necessary.
RJ The Bike Guy THANKS! :-)

A lot of grease could cause the pawls to stick.
thanks, i`ll be gentle with my hub just like you were.
RJ,
Why do you use the marine grease instead of some of the other bike greases?
It's cheaper, and works just as well.
Awesome Video RJ!! Really big Fan of the overhauls. Oh and how's the Vintage Fixie You Built?
Parked until spring. It's too cold to ride! Outside temp is currently 12F.
Man that's cold! Thanks for the reply.
my rear wheel dont spin freely can you please tell me what it can be.
so happy just got bratz bike frame

If it overheats, it may wreck the old grease and need to be repacked. It would have to be a really long downhill.

Can you put 6 speed sproket into a bmx frame
I don't know. Never tried. With enough work, I am guessing maybe.

Is it possible to do this overhaul without taking the wheel apart? (i.e. leave the hub, spokes and rim intact) Thanks!
Yes. You do not need to remove the spokes rim. I just had a loose hub lying around.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Excellent! Thanks so much for these brilliant tutorials! They are making all the difference for me getting back into cycling after almost two decades and enjoying restoring a vintage Raleigh :) :)
And how does it work? Is that a friction brake? Grease?
Probably similar in concept to this: ua-cam.com/video/L2f0e28Dito/v-deo.html
Can you do a video of how to disable the coaster brake hub and basically make it a cassette or other. That's if it is possible.
Not possible.
Monkyman245 Yes true i ruined my hub with it. it sort of worked but the wheel went all retarded.
i mean hub.
I've overhauled my very similar hub, but now when I start pedaling forward, it takes a while for the gear to "catch". Did I do something wrong?

I did it the way that multiple books (such as Sutherland's Handbook) I have read say to do it.
Thank you
i bought coastal wheels because of the look and threw a way the hub and substitute rotary disc brake freewheel hub instead.
I did all the steps but the brake is significantly worse! Had the same problem that your bendix 70 had but now my brake doesnt work, can someone give me a tip on how to fix it?
I am guessing you did something incorrect. But no idea what. Take it apart and try again.
If engaging the brake is a problem during the back travel of the pedals is the case, then do not use grease in the center of the mechanism, where brake shoe and its internals. Only liquid oil.
