I watched him play a league cup game for Everton in 2001. At that point he was drinking before the game and was nowhere near the fitness required. He was by an absolute mile the best player on the pitch, just seemed to have so much time on the ball, never panicked, every touch technically superior to everybody else.

As a Pensioner and a life long Celtic supporter I can only compare Paul Gascoigne to the legendary Jimmy Johnstone, and I am sure Paul would accept that comparison with glee, both were the ultimate in total entertaining football, have the immense pleasure of watching them both play, the beautiful game just screams out for these types of players but unfortunately they do not come around very often.

I was so confused when I saw that he wasn't in the 98 squad for the World Cup. It was a disgrace, as he was one of the strong men of England at this time.
