Disturbing Justice Introduction

When conflict arises in the prison system, we are left to consider whether those involved are disturbing justice, or if the justice itself is disturbing. Through the lens of seven disturbances and riots at the Idaho State Penitentiary, we see multiple sides of complicated issues. From the irreverent to the violent, each incident stems from misunderstanding and differences between those incarcerated and those in charge of their punishment. These stories both defined and helped shape the state of corrections in Idaho. Art allows us to make the story accessible and visual to all audiences to that we continue to ask important questions about our collective past. It is through art and history that we tell the story of “Disturbing Justice.”
