Three years late reply but the background image is from a visual novel called Aibeya. The thumbnail chick is Nekone from another visual novel called Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, or to be more exact, the anime adaptation of the game.
Metal Slug X is an upgraded version of Metal Slug 2 that fixed the slowdowns 2 had. It is almost a totally new game. Apart from the slowdowns, X also added new weapons, new vehicles, new enemies and had different enemy placements (including different bosses). For example the Mars people don't show up until the final mission in 2, whereas in X you fight their UFOs in the latter half of mission 4.
Not the characters themselves but there ARE differences between this and the original version of Metal Slug 2 with one of the most prominent being that the slowdown was fixed

In the 5th mission you could come to the boss with the 3 slugs, that's actually my favorite trick in the game

He used video interpolation... so he actually played at 30FPS, and converted the video to 60 afterwards
