Hey y'all! It' been a while since I made this video. I made an updated video ( ua-cam.com/video/30fA7EUZvgU/v-deo.html ) with my current chin mount GoPro helmet setup. Definitely go check it out as it includes some key updates that really improve this setup for every helmet, including using my new favorite mount: bit.ly/2DAJ6Fy (click link and use code "MOTONOSITY" for 10% off!) Send me a pic of your setup on Instagram! @motonosity
They seriously need to come up with some better mounting solutions. They're all so bulky or awkward. What's the point in buying a small camera if the mount is huge?
6Twisted that's pretty compact to me, cameras don't get any smaller than a GoPro
Dawson Boyle I think he's referring to the mount not the camera, with that said the rig this guy has in the front looks better than the side mount IMO, never liked seeing a camera sticking off the side of helmets.
hoveball I know the whole mounting setup is compact and sturdy too I'm not sure the guys issue
I think that this set up work for both, front and side camera placement
'They' already did, it's called Sugru...ooh a comment from 2 years ago, never mind. Peace.
This is honestly one of the nicer helmet camera setups I've seen for motovlogging. If the helmet's chin bar doesn't work for directly attaching the curved adhesive mount I'd definitely go this route rather than anything else. Thanks for this! subbed
+MrSXys WildRide thanks a lot man!
Hello,
I have a Shoei RF 1000, and I mounted my GoPro Hero 4 as you did in your video.I did a couple things different. 1) Added lock washers to each connection, 2) used 2 long and 2 short extensions 3) used a lanyard attached to my chin strap. I tested it today and it was good at freeway speeds (average 75-80, hit 105 briefly) no loss of Gopro. I will be uploading a video eventually.
Thanks
I really appreciate you being so thorough and providing links for everything. Thanks.
Hermit DaVlog No problem!
Motonosity Definitely a helpful vid! thanks man. I spent about a half hour going through ordering all this stuff but then realized... none of these parts can be shipped to Canada.. I'm going to try and track this stuff down at local stores. Thanks for the ideas though!
DAMN, you weren't kidding! That really is a solid looking mount setup, great choice. It looks waaaay more stealth than I was anticipating.
Well done mate. A simple fix that works a treat. The black housing changes the whole look of these cameras.
I have the exact same helmet and had the exact same problem with that ridge. I looked in my "GoPro junk box" and I had all the pieces to put the setup together. Crazy good! Tomorrow I will pickup the screws at Lowes. Great vid!
That's awesome man!!
Thanks. I've had a side mount on my RF1200 for months and never liked having one-third of the shot taken up by the helmet. Nice work; subscribed!
Replacing the screws is a neat trick, should be a good idea to carry a hex just in case though.
Thanks for the vid! For those who live in places wo rain I suggest the frame mount, you dont have to drill holes in side of the case, and it comes with lens cap. I havent used the case since I got it. I also use the chest mount. It works good for tucking if you strap it up high and tilt gopro up. But if youre sightseeing obviously best on the helmet so people see what you see.
Hi Motonosity, just wanted to say that I bought the bolts that you used (from a uk supplier) and it really cleans up the look of my set up. Wanted to go chin mount but the agv k3sv has a concave side so I had to side mount.
Fount the video really helpful. Thanks again, John (r6 rider from Scotland)
Nice! Let's make a video about this and show my fans and bring more riders to your channel too!
Let's do it!
+MicBergsma Mic! A motonosity feature would be awesome on a GoPro tips video. What would that be #1,000,000? haha
+LlamaWarfare haha right now I am at #515, Motonosity and I could get this video done soon when weather calm down a bit :)
+MicBergsma You are awesome!
+MicBergsma Awesome, two awesome UA-camrs. A GoPro King and a awesome Motovlogger.
Thanks buddy, I used this setup on my new Lorenzo helmet I just upgraded to, wanted to reduce the sail affect I was getting from the side mount. Bought the screws and all. Really cleans it all up!
That black case is damn sexy against the matte black of your helmet. Awesome video!
TankGrrrl Really cleans up the look!
It does look much nicer than the clear cases.
Thought i'd come back to this and say thanks for the guide on helmet mounting. Did this on two different helmets and got the best view that everyone asks about.
Thanks Motonosity!
this is the best setup/mounting/use of available parts i've seen. good job
jdale04 Thanks!
Can't a company make a helmet that have a gopro mount built into the shell for chin mouting ???
that would be perfect dont have add all the annoying mounts then be amazing
you should check airoh commander helmet, they gave us the bracket for gopro included in the package
Yes. I hate the idea of gluing mounts to my expensive helmets
I was going through a nightmare to fix my camera on the helmet due to extra curve near the chin. This setup really helped!!!
Thank you so much for this video man! I did the setup exactly like you did and it's absolutely amazing. Best setup and view for the GoPro! Big ups from Germany!
I had a similar problem to you but where I wanted to fit the mount to the helmet it curved in which meant the adhesive pad on the back would not stick enough especially in the middle of the mount. To make the bottom of the mount the same contours as my helmet i put some cling film onto my helmet where I wanted to fit the mount. I then scuffed up the bottom of the mount a little and put some body filler onto the top of the cling film where the mount needed to go. The mount was then pressed into the body filler (only 2-3mm or so depth) and stuck on just with a piece of tape. Once the body filler has gone off gently prise it off your helmet (this is why the cling film was used). The base of the mount is now exactly the same as your helmet. Trim the body filler back to your mount (you can paint it black if you must) and then fix the adhesive pad to the mount. When you fit it to the helmet it now has a 100% fit with the contours of the helmet.
Just got a new go pro and I have a huge obstruction on the front of my helmet. I legit just put it together and love the way it looks. Thanks hommy
Clean guide bro - I got the front and side mount kits, and got all the pieces I needed to mount as you did (I have an air intake in the front which means I need to mount as you did to get it 'in front' POV).
Greetings from a new motovlogger in Athens Greece. Very usefull diy man. I will move my camera mount from right side as near as possible to Chin. Exactly same place like yours! Thanks again for the video. Drive safe
+Motonosity I can not thank you enough for having this video out there! Thanks!
+Buckeye Drew no problem man!
Awesome setup. Props to Spacepod for the screw idea. I picked some up this weekend at lowes and it looks so much better. Not sure why gopro didn't think of this. Guess they didn't want to inconvenience people with having to get an extra tool.
Best gopro setup actually having the lens in the centre! My shoei tz-x would have the problem of the curve in the middle like yours always wondered how I could do it with a gopro thanks
Thanks motonosity! this is the easiest way to set up my gopro on my specific helmet right now. thanks a lot!
I too have a Shoei helmet with the same "ridge" problem, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for making this video. I stole your idea and now I'm rocking a very similar setup and it's working out great!
+Ronica's Ride Great to hear!
Very Good Job! I took your basic idea and was able to mount my Go Pro to a Bell Star. One trick...I used large clothes pin type wood clamps to hold the sticky mount down onto the helmet to get the sticky mount to sit completely flush on to the helmet. Left the clamps in place for about an hour or so. Worked Good. I used a GoPro mic adaptor instead of the one you list...mostly because I didn't trust the non-GoPro adaptors. Really doesn't stick out very much and I used a Drift mic with a fur cover since that's what I already had. Haven't tested it yet on the road, but seems to work well in my "backyard" testing. Again, nice job...
Great Video and a big help. I have been considering the drift due to the shape (more aerodynamic) however prefer the go pro for my application. I had no idea that this would mount so clean on chin.
Great setup... I copied it for my own mount using pieces I had laying around and it is great for POV riding.
Thanks for posting your video. I was thinking of setting up my new GoPro on the side of my helmet, but after seeing your video, I was able to mount it in the front of my helmet.
The one thing I would say is that I would add a GoPro Side Mount Kit to your list of things needed. I know you mention it in your video, but not itemized in your summary of links.
Thanks again!
Great video, and I have the same helmet and have only found this set up to be the most beneficial.. Saw another guy who did the same set up, but he painted his bolts all black. DEFINITELY made the helmet look much sleeker.
Really useful tutorial video, best I've seen so far! I have now ordered the parts to mount my GoPro Hero 4 silver this way, I have been looking at mounting it on the front of the helmet for a while but it always looked like a dog's dinner! This way looks well neat, nice one!
+Blaby Biker Let me know how it works out!
I have now used this mounting system on my HJC helmet, I had to set the mount a little further forward as I needed clearance for the latch on my visor which is central and not on the side, really pleased with the set-up, thanks for the video!
oh my god this is the best idea ever,my helmet has a vent thing on the mouth/chin area, its a gmax gm11d for anyone wondering, and obviously i couldn't mount a gopro to it, i'm going to use this when i make enough money to get a gopro, thanks
Cool idea man. Put black nail polish on those silver nut heads, fully blacked out. Good trick.
I'm watching this video after 9 years omg 😱❤
I have the same helmet. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do side mount or chin mount. After seeing your vid and spacepod's setup, I think I'm going to go this route. Great call on the black out case. Looks slick with the rf 1200..
This is the best setup honestly.
I need to play with my mic position more. I get good voice sound but everything else is muffled sounding. It's most likely because currently the mic is behind the cheek pad. Great video bro and I'll be getting some of them screws.
I like the chin mount idea. It might be a much better angle than having my curved mount stuck to the cheek area of my helmet. I also just subscribed.
Nice set-up. This is exactly how I have and the view is much better. I changed it from the blackout housing to the frame mount because it made it easier to plug in mic adapter and change batteries on the fly.
Just not going to be weather resistant though. You could check out my GoPro Vlog Set-up video just to check it out.
this! this is what i'm looking for all this time!
thanks man!
Bahaha, here I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how to get my mount to work on my helmet, which must also have the base mount off to the side of the chin portion and also angled 'inwards' and 'down', and I was on my way to use an elaborate set of parts which would've left me with a decidedly-non-flush mounting solution which would still have been offset of the center. Now thanks to this video the solution to the problem is so ridiculously obvious I can't believe I didn't 'see' it within a minute of thinking about it!
Thanks Motonosity! This is the mounting video that has helped me the most as i cannot mount it straight on either. when i eventually get my channel going ( just started) i will be giving you a massive shout out. how helpful are those bolts?!!! they are so much better than the gopro tap like things that just get in your way. thanks again and a new sub from me sir.
I've sprayed the extenders with the silver bolts to matt black. Looks much more stealthy. 😀
A cheaper way to get the straight joints is to get em on Amazon. They’re $8 for 2 short and 2 long in the same direction. Another $8 if you want the direction changing ones.
Thanks for the ideas though, I think this is the setup I will use for my helmet.
One question though...do you have any issues with adhesion of the sticky pad? Did you have to add anything to make it stick better? I don’t want to see a GoPro go tumbling down the road because it fell off.
Good video. I run my camera the exact same way but coming from the left side so the USB adapter wire can be attached to the linkage vs fully exposed like yours; although that 90 degree adapter helps a bunch. Sweet idea using the socket head screws! Gonna have to add that to my setup.
I decided on the right side because I didn't want all the weight on the right (with my Sena).
Motonosity very logical
Great con chin mount! I've already mounted mine and considering Epoxy 🙈
Man, that's a clean set up. I like the black on black look! Stealthy. How do you like the bluetooth communication setup?
Awesome video brother. I have a shoei as well, just bought the same go pro a couple days ago. I'm from San Antonio and I plan on hopefully meeting you at the Austin meet on Halloween. Should be a great time. Anyways, thanks for the video. Needed help with mounting. This did it for me. Ride safe.
Amazing idea on the screws! Thanks! Will clean up my setup quite a bit
Old video but I came here to see how motovloggers set up their helmets. How do some motovloggers have it set up so that when they are using a communication device between riders, that the audio can be heard in the video from the other person talking? And also, would you have 2 mics in your helmet? the Sony one from your GoPro and one from the Sena? I hope I explained my question clear enough. Thanks Motonosity!
+Cam MacKenzie Almost all dual vlogs are created by sharing footage. I have my video with my audio and the person in vlogging either has their video with their audio. Then just edit it together. Some have used a Sena GoPro backpack to save the Sena audio from the person they are vlogging with, but the quality is subpar. Yes I have two mics.
This is the best setup. Thanks, Brent.
Thanks so much motonocity. I also have a Shoei helmet (qwest in my case) and was bummed when I realized the ridge kept me from vertically attaching the curved pad. Gonna give your setup a try.
I was wondering how to mount my GoPro on my helmet because I had the same issue as you. Thanks man, great solution!
Nice to see a chin mount without putting a hole or something in the helmet or vent! You could maybe move the links on the mount back towards the helmet so that when the gopro rests on your helmet its at the correct angle so its really easy to put on?
Not quite sure what you're saying
I read it over and thought it sounded like gibberish too.
You know the 3 or so straight extenders? If you move them slightly closer in to the helmet I think you might be able to get it so the angle of the camera will be perfect every time. You could just rotate the camera so it is touching the vent and it would be right.
I just thought that might be a bit easier for you to do instead of messing around with the angle to make sure you're not just seeing handlebar or sky.
I understand now :) Those pieces have to be out slightly or else the camera does not have the room to face forward. Pushing them in would cause the camera to face outward as well as down slightly because it would not be able to rotate back. I never have to adjust mine. I've got it in the position it needs and I never have to chance it :)
Ah I see, I just thought if it's slight it might face at the right angle. But then again it doesn't take much effort to get it right :)
Nice setup Motonosity and thanks for the tips. I know what you mean about the ridge on the Shoei helmets. The ridge on my X12 is pretty sharp to mention the chin is right above it and on my RF1100 its not that bad. I will definitely look at getting the parts you mentioned. I'm also thinking about a top mount as well.
TechT1999 I did the top mount when I first started vlogging. It definitely looks a lot weirder haha
Really nice and helpful video! After viewing this, Ι did something similar for my non-GoPro action cam on my Shark RaceR Pro and it worked perfectly (just for video, i don't use mics). Already tested it on a 5000klm-road trip from Greece to Pyrenees with awesome results. Really handy while on the bike and it doesn't bother you at all. Also you don't feel its weight and my Apeman A60 with its waterproof housing is bigger than this in the video! Really easy to mount and dismount. (the tip with the M5 screws is brilliant). Thank you for sharing this Motonosity!
thats a really clean build for this mount ;) will do my setup almost the same as you!
keep up the cool vids man!
Thanks, Motonosity! I need a mic setup and it's good to know what parts are compatible with a GoPro and can cooperate to make the mic setup complete. Up to now I've been getting by on raising my voice from inside my helmet and letting the resonance of the helmet carry my voice to the camera. As you can imagine, it's not ideal, but it does work reasonably well at speeds below 45mph. Above that, wind gets too noisy and I can't record audio.
Tons of great advice here that has really helped me get started. Thanks man!
FWIW the GoPro mounts are both much cheaper on eBay (yes genuine GoPro), at least they were for me this week. Shipping was free and faster too. Thanks for the easy-to-follow guide!
I am very interested to see how the Hero4 Session might work as a chin mounted camera !!
Thanks for the tip about the M5 screws. Works great!
Thanks man, you cleared up what I was thinking but not sure about. Thumbs up
Getting my Yi4k+ centered was tricky but I've got her just right upside down. Luckily my camera will rotate the vid automatically or manually so I'm good to go
"thats what she said" , cracked me up right there.
Yeah. Adolescent humor
This is good stuff, ordered the parts and it works on my helmet now too, thanks bro!
Mr McNosity I don't know what you do for a job but I feel like it has something to do with programming. Your setup looks dope af.
thanks for the size of the bolts! they fit great
+Brandon Brown Hey would you come check my channel out and look at my content? And if you like it subscribe! I'm always looking for advice to make my videos better so if you have any let me know, thanks!
Just ordered my last piece from the list minus the mic, sena thank for the video
This is a really helpful vid. Quick question about your right angle mic adapter - when using this do you get sound through both speakers i.e. left and right, or just one? I ask because a lot of these adapters assume a mono mic and therefore only have one channel wired.
Best Setup! Have the same Helmet and going to do the same. Thought about painting the Chrome caps black?
I love product reviews. Something motorcycle related to Learn from. Thanks Moto.
Thanks for the inspiration man, i did this my self, but ising aluminum plates instead of gopro's pricy mounts
Super! Very useful tutorial. Thank you so much!!!
have my gopro mounted on chin as well, I was able to stick it right on the chin. works well.
Hey Moto, I have tried and tried to position the curved mount like yours on my rf1200 and I don't understand how you put yours where it is. It looks like yours fits right in but when I try to put mine on that ridge is in the way. If you could please help that would be great!
How does it go for the air flow at your mouth? Does the go pro block all the ventilation?
you gotta keep the mouth vent closed or the mic picks up crazy wind noise
Very nice Setup! Maybe i copy this to my helmet :D
++Great viddy motonitrousosity!
very very useful for the people using go pro for the first time
That's an excellent mount setup. Thanks!
Great video! Got a question tho. What cover do you use for your mic to block off the wind noise ? I watched other videos you have and it's very good.
Do you by chance remember as to where you purchased your fur cover for your mic? Love your videos by the way man, keep up the amazing work!
So wait a second. Just so I'm understanding correctly. You use the arms from a single front and side mount along with the socket head screws to get this look correct? Did you pick up those nuts for the screws at a home depot as well?
When you are in a more aggresive position, like on the highway doing 85, will the camera angle still see the road? or does it focus only on the tank and gauges? Cool video! Thanks for the help
Awesome vid. Helped me set up the GoPro on my Shoei
You could also find the nuts in a black color or heat them up and spray paint them.
do u need 3m double side tap for the camera mount or it comes with it?
thank you
+RB Ninja12 It comes with its own adhesive. All you have to do is peel the backing off the mount and stick it on.
Wow it looks EXTREMELY cool!! Love the stealth looks! Thanks for the tips :)
Great setup, the black anodized screws really clean the mounting brackets up - gonna have to get some of those. Did you put any loctite on them or did you feel that it was a tight enough that it isn't needed?
Plenty tight without loctite. I just picked a set up this last week. Really cleans the look up!
Word - much appreciated 2WheelJack!
Very nice setup man
Great set up, looking at something similar for myself. thanks man.
Very clean and beautiful. Thanks.
Bro had the same issue with my helmet and i ended up mounting my gopro like yours. Great video man just a question my adhesive mount moves very slightly did u face that with ur mount?
Haven't found better solution yet. But those mounts are really expensive where I live... Is it possible to use just the side mount parts if the sticker is glued a bit closer to the center of the helmet?
Has anyone done that? I'm worried it won't be "ponting forward" enough.
than you this is exactly what i needed thank alot
Thanks man ! It worked perfectly for my ATV helmet !
Bro, what else additional mounts do I need buy, because we get some already with the box
