    Great vid Oakie - some nice ported saws there. The thing I like the most about these 590/620 Echos is that the big box stores sell them so homeowners will run them into the ground with a dull chain and they can be had cheap to wrench on...

      It was a really fun day to get together with Mark. Like he has mentioned, swapping bars and trying to keep things equal is VERY time consuming. Then you must think about getting the saws hot again which is also a bit more difficult IMO with ECHO to make sure they are running optimally.

At this moment, I do not know what to expect from the footage of when I ran the 562 and the MS460 in the same wood too. @@oakiewoodsman Nope, it is not. My guess is that every one of the ported saws were outrunning the chain. I will say this though... That saw that I built to Mr. Walkers specs... meh. The customer wanted it, so I didn't see the harm in it, but I won't be building another one like that. It was also a cheap build. He got the whole saw for like $450 shipped (and he purchased a new piston). So... the amount of additional work I'm gonna do for such a basic build is minimal. Nothing wrong with it, just... very much a low frills build. No timing advance, no real carburetor mods, a basic muffler mod. You get it... basic. To make that saw run proper with those timing numbers, it would need additional work. Timing advance, welded chamber, and advanced carb work. But it works well as a general work saw build. The Brisco built saw really tells the tale. I have ran that saw and it is a monster! He did all sorts of work to that thing and it produces over 7hp. The fact that it tested so poorly just directly points to the chain spinning so fast that it cannot discharge the chips fast enough and the cutter isn't able to properly engage with the wood. If you are gonna run the test again, I'll send you a better saw to test. That one is without question, the weakest 590 I have ever built because the timing numbers.

    Well this shows and proves a hand sharpened chain beats an out-of-box Dukes by far!
    The 28” 84dl Oregon hand-filed won 1st then 2nd place vs 24” 81dl on all other saws with new dukes chain.
    Only chain decidedly fast out of the box I have experienced is 33RS Stihl and C83 husqvarna, even Oregon EXL imo can be made faster with a hand file vs factory grind. Dukes is fine for someone on a tight budget, but for performance buy something else.

    • @oakiewoodsman
      @oakiewoodsman  3 місяці тому +3

      I just wasn't quite sure if my particular hand filing would do it. I found it interesting as the bar was a bit longer, the chain is quite worn down and as you know, many people swear that you can only get the tooth so small and then it isn't worth it. Not me, I go until the teeth are all but gone. I have never purchased 33 RS chain because of cost and that fact that I do not care too much about out of the box sharpening because it seems when I have a new chain is the time I find rock or metal i something and suddenly that out of the box grind no longer matter as well. I love a nice new C83 in nice clean wood however! I couldn't agree more on the Duke pricing. VERY good value!

    • @zeromark202
      @zeromark202 3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah man, I’m with you on people say you can’t get the chain tooth to small. Cant be farther from the truth lol, race chain is ground down like crazy to lighten the chain and create less friction through the wood. Actually people with good experience say the last little bits left sharpening the chain to get everything out of it has been the best it ever has been. A new chain should be at the slowest speed due to drag and weight. Something I had to think about for a bit.

      Very nice!! Yeah these echo 590/620’s can’t compete with that saw. The 500i is fast! Think they are #1 in hp per lb ratio at .519
      There even faster than a ms462 & 572xp but those are 70cc vs 80cc

    Interesting. I am curious about the changes in compression ratios between stock and base gaskets deleted

      Interesting concept. I think there is a consensus that the compression may have less impact than the port timing changes from removing the base gasket. I am also fairly ignorant of how all of this works however. 😉
