North Vietnam won the war. The North was backed by Soviet Union. The South was backed by the US. SO in a way, the US lost the war. I'm neither Vietnamese nor American btw
@GiangcK well, my information was taken directly from google...it says that it was...so you can check it out...but just the fyi...most "city halls" in the world 🌎 didn't start out as a "city hall" or a government building
Sorry, but just to correct your statement "This area once was fairly destroyed by a major war". In fact, one of the special things about Saigon is that it was NOT destroyed by the war. In fact it was barely touched by it. The South ended up surrendering Saigon with barely a shot fired, so the city suffered almost not physical damage from the war at all.
FYI Hotel de Ville in French means City Hall . That word has nothing to do with an hotel where tourists can stay at . So don't translate Hotel de Ville to Hotel of the City . Hotel de Ville = Mairie = City Hall .
@@hollycaputowanderlust Google gave you a wrong information my dear . Since the beginning the French colonial government of Indochina already designed that building as a city hall . And it was built in the same style as the Hotel de Ville in Paris ( have you ever seen that building in Paris ? ) Only the Continental Hotel on Dong Khoi street ( not too far from the Saigon city hall ) was designed as an hotel . I think you can throw your Google App. in the trash bin lady . Also it's not the IMPERIAL PALACE , but the INDEPENDENCE PALACE or the REUNIFICATION PALACE or the PRESIDENTIAL PALACE . FYI there is no imperial palace in Saigon but only in Huê city and Hanoi city for the simple reason that the ancient emperors of Vietnam never resided in Saigon .
I appreciate your information, but I cannot go back & forth on the information provided by the internet. When people are not from the city, and only have the internet to research our information, we have to rely on that information & hope that the internet was correct, and I did use multiple sources.
AS-iq7sx - You are such a big ignorant dude . Ho Chi Minh is the name of president Ho Chi Minh , the Vietnamese hero who fought against the French to gain independence for Vietnam . His dream was to see Vietnam reunified in one independent country . But unfortunately he passed away before his dream came true . If you didn't know anything about the history of VN , so keep your mouth shut and stop telling stupidity . I am pretty sure you are still bitter because you lost the war and your head is full of sh.t instead of neurons .
A fascinating masterpiece by a fabulous travel host. Thanks.

"Hôtel de ville" means "city hall", that buliding was built as the government seat from the begining. It has never been a hotel!

@@hollycaputowanderlust it was a palace then later turned to city hall

@hungcuongnguyen293 yes, but according to Google it was once looked at to be a hotel prior to choosing it to become a government building

Most of people says Saigon because Saigon is Vietnamese name
HCMC is not Vietnamese name but from China
