  • I'm playing a completely amazing 1965 Vox AC50 full stack with 1964 Celestion T530 Alnico Blues using a 2021 Fender Telecaster 60 CS Relic and a 2008 Gibson Les Paul R9. This is one of the best and most vintage sounding rigs I have played. I completely LOVE IT!!

That sounds amazing. The impact of speakers is huge too. I have a very cheap Vox AC4 head from about a decade or so ago. Through a 4 by 12 it sounds amazing. Through 1 by 12 it's dreadful.
    Keep up the great work!

Re. Speakers surviving. An AC30 turned all the way up can output perhaps 40 watts or more. A couple of blues only handle 30 watts on paper, but can hang in there - most of the time.
A 100 watt Superlead from the Plexi era can reach about 140 watts when dimed. Old Greenbacks only handled 20 watts, so the amp needed eight of them, i.e., a couple of 4x12s for a total of 160 watts power handling. Even then they could blow.
I read something on Celestion's FAQs recently. They said if the amp is rated 100 watts, then 100 watts worth of speakers will always be able to cope. That means four 25 watt greens should cope with a Superlead. I have trouble believing that, but maybe. I do not want to test the statement for veracity though. I am not cashed up enough to risk destroying a quad's worth of new greens.
P.S. Some 100 watt reactive loads out there can not cope with a dimed 100 watt Plexi. They can not even cope with a dimed JMP 50 or 1987x. A Suhr one can and so can the 200 watt rated Freyette one I have now. I almost found out the hard way with my previous reactive load and let the magic smoke out of the amp, i.e, almost blew it up when the reactive load overheated and went into auto shut down mode, which leaves the amp running without a load on the output transformer. I realized what was happening and scrambled to turn the amp off in time. No damage as far as I can tell.

Thanks, interesting about claimed new Greenback power handling. Either there’s a new version of the Greenback or they misunderstood the question. And if you don’t change some other parameters more power handling means impaired sound.
      Glad your amp survived! Cheers!

I'm an (ageing) stuck record but I rank these amps (still) above JTM45's and 5F6 tweeds. The only reason they aren't 10k a pop is because of post-war politics keeping them out of the American mainstream.
Edit: Best way to describe them is a Marshall with the soul of a clinically depressed husky.

That T top sounds amazing. I will never own a late 50s les Paul so my realistic attainable dream guitars are a 1974 to 1977 les paul standard and a custom from the same era . A large chunk of my favorite guitar tones come From T top Equiped 70s Gibosn les Paul.. A les Paul Deluxe with Factory humbucker routes would dover nicely as well but they are alot more expensive due to their rarity . From 1970 to the end of 73 if you wanted a les Paul Stnandard with Humbuckers you could only order them from the factory but all they did was take a finished deluxe body and expand the mini humbucket routes for full size buckers and put on a truss rod cover that said Standard .
Alex lifeson had a tobacco sunburst 1970 Standard that started out life as a deluxe but got the factory expanded humbucker routes and that guitar sounds absolutely amazing. The 1974 standards also sound Killer
I would like a 74 Standard and a 1977 standard. I want a 77 because it's got a maple neck and 77 was the first year they dropped the Pancake body after introducing it in 1969. Also I I find after 77 the T tops take a nose dive in tonal quality . They get bland and generic sounding To my ears 76/77 are the last years that T tops still have that classic T top sound .
The Maple neck les Paul's have a sound all their own . They have a less compressed and open crunch and are very percussive and firm in the low end . They also stay very clear under heavy drive and distortion. They are not as chewy or vintage sounding. They have a crispness and snap to them
I wish Gibson would do something like a USA standard 70s les Paul with a maple neck the narrower nut width And a proper mid to late 70s neck carve which are unique and not like your run of the mill 60s slim taper and throw a set of the gibosn T type pickups in them .
Maple necks were a staple for a 7 year period and I want a maple neck les pauls . Of course for the price Gibson would ask you could get a clean example of a real mid to late 70s standard for just a 1000 dollars to 2000 dollars more and you would get most Likely a better guitar. I don't know how the T type pickups stack up the the real mid 70s T tops but by guess is that the originals will be better if the original vs current Gibson PAF offerings are an indication. Although I do love some Of Gibsons modern PAF style pickups like Custombuckers and all their variations as well as the BB1 or BB2 as neck pickups with a BB3 bridge and in the right guitar a 57 classic or Classic Plus both as bridge pickups. Don't like any type of 57 in the neck although the new underwound 57 classic sounds promising but as much as I love those pickups they don't sound as good as the originals but them again nothing really does . Some of the very expensive clones get a little closer than modern Gibsons but not so much more closer that I think the difference is worth the outlay . . They get closer but not that much closer and they still don't nail it any stretch. Once you pass the high end Gibson and Duncan custom shop pickups the law of diminishing returns really kicks in at the point and If your not using vintage amps or vintage clone single channel amps or your using dirt boxes then it matters even less . When your using dirt boxes and channel switching amps with built in drive channels alot to the subtle nuances of your expensive boutique pups go out the window .

The Vox AC50 is what Page used to record whole lotta love .

  • @adamwatson6916
    @adamwatson6916 10 місяців тому

A T top in the bridge with a BB1 in the neck is a good Approximation of what Page used in his number 1 les paul from June 72 to the very ealry 90s . He had a 72 T top in the bridge paired with the original 59 PAF in the neck which most likely had an A2 magnet . It was that combination of the A5 T top and A2 PAf that Gave Page that unique middle position tone he had on the How The West Was Won The Song Remains The Same and at the Earls Court 75 shows and Knebworth 79..
Alnico 5 in the bridge with a 7.5k output and Alnico 2 or 3 in the neck with An 8k to 8.3k neck are key specs to that Page Middle position tone .
I saw a video of a guy who put an A5 magnet in a Gibson 490r neck pickup and used it for the bridge position and took a Burstbucker 2 and swapped out the stock A2 Magnet for An A3 mag and used it for the neck position and the Page tones he was getting blew me away.
The A5 490 was meant to be a poor man's T top and A3 BB2 was a poor man's Jimmy Page custombucker as the Jimmy Page signature pickups were Alnico 3 and measured between 8k and 8.2k.
According to Gibson the current Custombuckers are supposed to be the same pickups that they developed and used for the Page guitar . This makes sense as the Page signature replica guitars finished in 2010 and then in 2011 the Custombucker started to show up in other artist Replica guitars and in CME and wildwood guitars and by 2013 all Custom Shop Reissues were getting Custombuckers .
The best neck pickup I ever heard was BB2 with an A3 magnet .it Sits in between a stock BB2 and a Custombucker.
I would love the hear Johando some experimenting pairing the T Top in the bridge with different neck pickups that he has like the BB2 and the Custombucker and get a duncan whole lotta humbucker and see what combo gets closest to the mid 70s Page middle position tone.
Another option is the new Gibson T type pickup paired with a BB2 or Custombucker
