In the desert, nature has created a very different (but no less beautiful) living system. And while this arid landscape may seem lifeless, it is very much alive. The plants and animals that have learned to survive in these harsh conditions made use of what little water they could find and avoid the scorching rays of the relentless sun. The American prairie once appeared as desolate as the desert, but over time, rainwater and nutrients gradually penetrated the hard surface of this land. Even the hooves of the mighty buffalo helped create the rich soil that would one day become home to the American farm. Of all the forces at work on the land, humans have had one of the most profound effects. The need to produce food for the growing world led to the enormous use-and sometimes overuse-of the land. In our search for more efficient ways to grow food, we often failed to realize the impact of our methods. Today, we’re learning to live with the land-discovering better ways to grow food that will assure both human and environmental wellbeing. In Japan, we’re learning that by adding composted leaves and other plant material to our soil, we can reduce the need for fertilizers. In farmlands across America, we’re learning that by plowing under vegetation containing natural fertilizers, we can enrich the soil without the use of chemicals. In Saudi Arabia and Mexico, we’re learning to produce food on desert seacoasts by developing and planting crops that thrive on saltwater. Here at Epcot, we’re learning to reduce the need for pesticides by using natural predators like ladybugs and wasps to control pests. How will we meet tomorrow’s growing need for food production, yet still respect the needs of the land? Some of the answers are being discovered just ahead. To help us maintain these carefully-controlled ecosystems (and for your safety), please remain seated in your boat at all times. Welcome to our living laboratory, where scientists from Epcot and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are exploring innovative ways to produce bountiful harvests-now and into the future. The tropics are home to the greatest diversity of plants on the planet. Many of these-like papaya, bananas, cacao, coffee, and rice-are well-known around the world. These are just a few of the edible plants that have been an important source of nutrition for people living in the tropics. Many are rich in vitamins and minerals, while others are well-adapted to growing in less-than-ideal conditions. Some, like the waterlily, thrive in wet, swampy areas and waterways. All parts of this plant-even the flower petals-are edible. The starchy root of the plant has long been used to make flour for baking. One day, many of these lesser-known tropical plants may be as important as the bananas growing on both sides of the boat. More than 28 million tons of bananas are eaten annually, making it the most popular fruit in the world. When we mention farming, you probably don’t think of fish-but fish farming (or aquaculture) accounts for nearly half of all the seafood consumed globally. Tilapia, bass, and catfish, like the ones you see here, are three of the more popular crops raised by fish farmers. The sustainable system we’re using here recycles the water in the tanks. As a result, we’re able to save millions of gallons each year. Our small fish farm produces nearly 5,000 pounds of fish each year to serve in restaurants around Walt Disney World. Innovations like this one can play an important role in our efforts to produce bountiful harvests and still protect natural resources. While there are more than 50,000 edible plant species in the world, most of us are only familiar with the handful that make up our everyday diet. The common grains growing here-wheat, maize, sorghum, and millet (plus rice)-account for nearly two-thirds of our global food consumption. Learning how to increase yields of these staples is an important goal of research around the world. These plants are definitely on their way up! Innovative growing techniques like these increase yield, while more efficiently using resources like water, fertilizer, and pesticides. Another innovation at work here is our integrated pest-management program. By populating our greenhouses with beneficial insects that prey on harmful pests like aphids and flies, we are significantly reducing our reliance on conventional pesticides. We’re growing these crops using our nutrient film system. This technique precisely controls and recycles water and nutrients. With it, we can produce over 27,000 heads of lettuce a year in this one small area. Some of our best ideas have been inspired by nature, like these fruit and vegetable trees. By growing these ground plants vertically, we can increase yield and better control diseases. These crops taste as good as they look-in fact, we serve more than 15 tons of produce from our greenhouses in restaurants here at The Land every year. The future of agriculture may include innovative ideas like this vertical growing system. Plants grown in this way use a fraction of the space required by traditional growing methods. That saves water and increases production. The aquaponics system on your left combines hydroponics with aquaculture. The fish provide a natural source of fertilizer for the plants, and the plants help keep the water clean for the fish. It’s another great way to produce more while using less. In our lab, Epcot scientists are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a number of innovative projects. The goal of these efforts is to produce higher-yielding and better-quality plants. These greenhouses represent just a fraction of the work being done worldwide to produce bountiful harvests for our growing population. Scientists, farmers, and even backyard gardeners are doing their part to improve the quantity and quality of foods that we all rely upon . Lol I’m a kid and I’m going to Disneyworld for the first time soon and I feel like I would love this ride bc it is chill but what I prob wouldn’t like is that it’s rly long😂
i hope this is still there when i can finally afford to take my kids to florida - i remember this when i was a kid. Would love to take my children on it. Epcot was amazing, - i loved the idea of the future when i was a child - i was obsessed with futuristic cars, buildings and equipment. This place just brought it to life for a young child. I was lucky to experience it
Epcot is undergoing a huge transformation. A lot of people are upset about it, which I totally get, but I’m excited about all the new stuff. But… Living with the Land is still there and I don’t think it’s going anywhere (for now anyway). It’s my favorite ride at Epcot! I love it and would be so sad if they ever closed it.
That's what we did!! We were exhausted from walking around and waiting in long lines in the horrible humidity that day and stumbled inside and saw there was practically no line, so we thought why not! A chance to sit down and rest out of the damn heat, and I'm so glad we did!!!
I want to be in Disney World SO bad I can taste the Dole Whip and smell Soarin'. This is one of my favorite rides at Epcot, the next is Spaceship Earth.
I'm so glad classic Epcot rides get so much love now adays. I think this goes to show you where the future of Epcot should go. Maybe....just maybe....we can have a classic-esque Imagination update in the not so distant future. :"D
Take the behind the seeds tour if they still do it. Absolutely worth it. We did it when our son was 10. Super informative - he was extremely interested.
They are still doing it, although they shut it down temporarily due to Covid. It was so interesting, especially if you’re a plant person or gardener. Even if you’re not, it’s amazing the things they’re doing in there. If you like the ride, you’ll probably love the tour, and it was only $35, I think, plus park admission. I’d like to do it again someday.
One of the remnants of Classic Epcot, though not as fancy as say test track or mission space or as iconic as Spaceship Earth, it harkens back to a time where wonder was in discovery of science and nature on display in Epcot. I do hope that it sticks around for a while, Its very pleasant and unique

Here because I read a trafficking story on Reddit that says the yellow house in the prairie section has a tunnel and sacrificing altar as well as a room to auction children off all accessible from it.
I’ve been watching so many videos of this ride trying to look for comments like yours but have only seen a few! That story creeps me out so much...getting goosebumps just thinking about it, so sick.

I read that it’s supposed to be like Walt’s childhood home and if you are dining at Garden Grill you can get a peek in the 2nd story window, which is supposed to be like his room. I’ve never eaten there (yet) but I thought that was pretty neat.
I was so sad. This is one of my favorite rides at Disney just cause it is relaxing and you can take a breather. When we went to Disney over the summer we went to Epcot for one day. We tried getting on the ride three times. The first time I broke down as we were leaving the station. The other two it broke down in line.
There is a Behind The Seeds tour (or at least there was before Covid) about a 90-120 minute tour of the greenhouses and such. We did it when my son was 10. He’s very interested in this topic and he was enthralled. Highly recommend it.
I second it. It’s back again. I went on it in May, but don’t procrastinate signing up. I was able to go because I was the only one in my group who cared to go. It was during the flower show, and I suspect the summer will be busy, too. If you like plants or gardening, it’s a must see. It was amazing.
A ride on this isn't complete without pulling up the old Listen to the Land song and playing it on the ride. (Still can't believe they ever got rid of it)
I adore this ride. It's really underrated. The only downside is that it's a bit hard to hear the narrator in the beginning because the sound effects drown out what is being said.
Disney should hire me as Head Maintenance at the Parks. 30 years experience has me pointing out so many issues I find it hard to enjoy the video. I would relocate for sure to help these guys out, it looks like they really need it.
my heart tells me this is good ride when I go to Florida with my mum and brother haven't been on it since 2012 but it's a very refreshing ride. the smells/atmosphere I love it I would definite go on it if I went to Epcot , a ride to not miss but family ride but it's a slow ride with so much atmosphere and reality it's nice. it must bring back nostalgia back to people because it' calming. Maybe a little drop would be good? to end but 6/10 BUT underestimated ? catches my eye.
Last time I visited EPCOT was 1990 or so. This looks like one of the least changed rides in the park. I see the Finding Nemo & other movie based crap, figuring I seen the park at its best and don't really need to see it again.
I loved the Caballeros, too! I forced my parents to ride it three times, I think. I’m 42, by the way. I love boat rides and old school rides, and that’s the best of both worlds. Plus, the music’s fun.
Alright where the hell was this when I was in epcot last month I didn't even noticed this ride existed until watching this video I really wish I found this ride cause it seems like something I could ride and relieve my stress
Just curious for those that might know, the part of the ride that has screens before you enter the grreenhouse was that always the case? This is the only version I know but curious if there were other scenes that they just replaced with screens over time.
Great Ride! Me and my girlfriend’s favorite at EPCOT!!! Such a fun and fulfilling ride! High enjoyment and entertainment! Education included!! Hopefully everyone else will enjoy this fucking waste of time! 😄

My dad loved this exhibit,He was country man through and through. He was born on a farm in 1930 and could grow just about anything.
Untouchable ride, the absolute best. The tour is also great! I tell everyone to take it if they have the opportunity.

Good video. Sad to see that this is fully automated now, with no more tour guide. Still enjoyable to see their hydroponics. This is the kind of thing that makes Epcot special and not just another thrill park.
I used to take my nursing babies on this ride. It was the perfect amount of time to let them nurse and fall asleep. It was my favorite as a new mom. 😌

I'm dining near this ride, and it shows the scene with the house and farm. After I eat, we will definitely be riding this.
Here because I read a trafficking story on Reddit that says the yellow house in the prairie section has a tunnel and sacrificing altar as well as a room to auction children off all accessible from it.
I’ve been watching so many videos of this ride trying to look for comments like yours but have only seen a few! That story creeps me out so much...getting goosebumps just thinking about it, so sick.

I read that it’s supposed to be like Walt’s childhood home and if you are dining at Garden Grill you can get a peek in the 2nd story window, which is supposed to be like his room. I’ve never eaten there (yet) but I thought that was pretty neat.

I was so sad. This is one of my favorite rides at Disney just cause it is relaxing and you can take a breather. When we went to Disney over the summer we went to Epcot for one day. We tried getting on the ride three times. The first time I broke down as we were leaving the station. The other two it broke down in line.

There is a Behind The Seeds tour (or at least there was before Covid) about a 90-120 minute tour of the greenhouses and such. We did it when my son was 10. He’s very interested in this topic and he was enthralled. Highly recommend it.
I second it. It’s back again. I went on it in May, but don’t procrastinate signing up. I was able to go because I was the only one in my group who cared to go. It was during the flower show, and I suspect the summer will be busy, too. If you like plants or gardening, it’s a must see. It was amazing.
I rode on this ride with my family when we went to Walt Disney World back in 1999.
I worked this ride back in 2013! If I could just sleep in that rain room all day I would be so happy

I adore this ride. It's really underrated. The only downside is that it's a bit hard to hear the narrator in the beginning because the sound effects drown out what is being said.

my heart tells me this is good ride when I go to Florida with my mum and brother haven't been on it since 2012 but it's a very refreshing ride.
the smells/atmosphere I love it I would definite go on it if I went to Epcot , a ride to not miss but family ride but it's a slow ride with so much atmosphere and reality it's nice. it must bring back nostalgia back to people because it' calming. Maybe a little drop would be good? to end but 6/10 BUT underestimated ? catches my eye.

Last time I visited EPCOT was 1990 or so. This looks like one of the least changed rides in the park. I see the Finding Nemo & other movie based crap, figuring I seen the park at its best and don't really need to see it again.

I loved the Caballeros, too! I forced my parents to ride it three times, I think. I’m 42, by the way. I love boat rides and old school rides, and that’s the best of both worlds. Plus, the music’s fun.

Just curious for those that might know, the part of the ride that has screens before you enter the grreenhouse was that always the case? This is the only version I know but curious if there were other scenes that they just replaced with screens over time.
