Great job looks good, just a wee tip when fixing the timber to masonry walls it’s a good idea to put a DPM (plastic barrier) on the wood face that’s against the wall to stop any moisture getting into the wood causing it to rot quicker
Hi Jack, I wonder if you might be so kind to give even more advice on this. For me, the house is dashed. Will this be a problem? I don't want water seeping down the wall and/or staining? Would there be any kind of soft foam type stuff I could put between the wood and the dashed wall that would fill all the little gaps between the dash stones etc?
Thanks for sharing, I love this video, I'm wanting to build something similar but with a roof but I cam definitely take inspiration and tips from yours. That paint looked great and went on super smooth. Good idea for that space and love the pizza oven, yum 🎉
Tip for fixing timber battens (or posts) to a wall. Fix at one end then level across and fix at the other end, then drill and screw all the way along. Saves trying to keep level while trying to mark multiple holes. 👍
Sooo love this, truly what amazes me is the determination you and your partner has on these project's, plus how much savings you both are making for not bringing in the tradesman. Your home is beautiful, keep up the great work I love your video's. 🤩🤩
Waooo this is cool. in fact i have learnt so much from you guys today i was about giving out a contract to a joiner but this has woken me up, i will give it a go with my wife, thanks Shade well done .
Great job. Stick a rain water gutter / down spout and collection barrel on then put on some clear corrugated sheets and cover the space for year round all weather seating area. Looks great, well done.
You are a legend, so I have just started building a pergola, although with a solid roof, think it is still called a pergola, and I used your masking tape method to mark the holes when attaching to the wall, not something I have ever thought off but makes it so much easier, keep up the good work and thanks for the great idea 😊😊
God people are being unnecessarily rude in these comments. Great video! I'm thinking about having a go at adding something similar to the back of my house so this was very useful to watch. Thank you
Hi just clicked on the link and bought the post level gizmo. Been looking for one of these, but didn't know what they were called. Thanks for the links. Nice job on your pergola.
Really great effort and result. I've been thinking of doing something similar in my garden so my ever growing grapevine has a place to live. I've used that Cuprinol Duck's back paint before too. I agree, it's not great, it gets algae on it quite quickly and doesn't resist the elements well for long. I have now got some Johnstone's paint which nothing seems to grow on and water beads off. A year now and it has done way better than the Cuprinol Duck's Back did.
fantastic work and great video. in regards to the timber to walls, no need to take post off and on. and then change to masonary bit. then you need and impact driver to drive the masonary screw in. for the cross bar on the wall, you can hammer temp nail into the cement part of brick to hold up while you line up. you should defo invest in a impact driver.
Great job and marking with the masking tape is an excellent idea ! A marksmen pen is quicker and easier but obviously don’t always have one to hand, I’ll definitely remember your way in future 😊
Great job, Shade! This gives me and idea for the small side yard we have that in use for my gardening. Plus, the pergola can be useful for my vining plants to grow on. Thx for the inspiration!😱🤯 🥰❤🤩🔥🥳
Loved this video, because it was not done by experts, mistakes and warts on show, good job are you going to put a cover on it for the rainy seasons that we will have?
Brilliant video and looks great! Im going to do similar and paint anthracite myself. Also thinking of decking the floor but i dont want to get giddy as I always under estimate the amount of work in these sort of projects lol! So a job for another day.
Getting me inspired and energised!! I have been looking for a video like this to help me be able show our builder what we were thinking. Are you leaving the roof uncovered? If not, then what might you use that is robust and does well in British climates. Great video. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful 💕💕 Can't wait to have a back yard to make one for my family!! 🙏🙏 The outdoor brick oven was genius! 🍕 Thank you for sharing, I love all of your videos 🙌🙌💞💞
Omg this turned out amazinggg, literally watched the whole way through with my popcorn like wow Shade! Is there anything you can’t do 😭😭 Can’t wait to a house and just renovate from the bottom up - all your videos are saved in my playlist ready for that time 👌🏾😂
Omg I’m so glad I came across this video! Me and my partner are going to attempt this in a couple of weeks! Thank you thank you for sharing! Can I check, are the screws you used for the 6x2 attatching to the house the same screws you used for attatching the posts to the opposite wall? And did you leave a gap at all with like washers or anything between the house and the 6x2? Thanks again! :)
Thank you! Yes same screws were used for the brick and the house. Didn’t leave any gap between the wood and the house though it’s not a bad idea to! ☺️
Looks really nice, BUT, As the Pergola is attached to the side of the house and next to the boundary of your property, surely you need to apply for and receive planning position, ideally BEFORE you construct!
Great video shade. Looking to do something similar up here in Scotland even if it is going to be going up in autumn/winter ha! Im looking at using perhaps those rolls of bamboo or a clear perspex on top of pergola for a little bit of rain cover. The bamboo roll would look better and keep out a bit of rain. But the perspex sheet would make it rain proof but might discolour a little over time/attract algae etc.
Very nice project, looks great and It really transformed the unused space. I have a similar space on the side but it narrows to 2.5ft at the rear and 10 ft wide in the front. Curious to find out what is the total lenght and how much distance did you leave between each joists? Also did you use the same Travis Perkins 6 x 2 joists for attaching to the wall of the house?
Looks good although I would be hesitant attaching the ledger to a brick wall. As brick wall are generally only meant to support the load above it and nothing else. Are your post below the frost line? If not how has the ledger held up over the years?

Hahahaha 2 right mate
@@pigmintfilm256 I would use flashing between the wood and dashing, thick enough to mould to the dashing, hope that helps.
You can also put washers between the wood and wall so the wood stands off the wall a few mm to allow any rain moisture to run down the back.
Jack, you changed my life with this advice!
Top tip for anybody else doing this. Paint your timber first when it’s on the ground. Saves time and hassle.
Thanks for sharing, I love this video, I'm wanting to build something similar but with a roof but I cam definitely take inspiration and tips from yours. That paint looked great and went on super smooth. Good idea for that space and love the pizza oven, yum 🎉
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
I can imagine that looking so cute at night with fairy lights!
Need to put some on! will be sooo cute ❤
@@ShadeShannon They do some really nice ones on amazon! Im thinking of getting some myself ❤
Even when you’re a “greasy, sweaty, mess” you still manage to look amazing! The pergola turned out fantastic too btw. Love your channel ❤️
Aww that’s lovely of you ❤️
That created a really wonderful living space. Love the entire yard, flowers are looking good.
Thanks so much!
I'm so excited about this video, I needed normal everyday people goes step by step on this project before we tried it. Thank you
That turned out really nicely .... so satisfying when it all comes together like that!
This video was invaluable - I have built my own this last weekend and I'm delighted with it! Thanks very much for posting
I’m so glad to hear this!
Looks fantastic-thanks for all the detail and explanations, a beginner (me) could actually follow this!
Nice! You’re welcome 😉

Thank you 🙏🏽
Or when you are alone, just do the middle one, then level and keep going (do most of my stuff alone)
Sooo love this, truly what amazes me is the determination you and your partner has on these project's, plus how much savings you both are making for not bringing in the tradesman. Your home is beautiful, keep up the great work I love your video's. 🤩🤩
Thank you! So happy that we can do these DIYs and not spend so much money. I think everyone should give DIY a little bit of a go sometimes ☺️
Travis perkins and jewsons are the most expensive builders merchants I have ever been in!
Waooo this is cool. in fact i have learnt so much from you guys today i was about giving out a contract to a joiner but this has woken me up, i will give it a go with my wife, thanks Shade well done .
Brilliant! I always try DIY myself as long as I do the research before hand!!
Your garden looks really nice. You've both work so hard on it and should be so proud
Thanks! 😄
Great job. Stick a rain water gutter / down spout and collection barrel on then put on some clear corrugated sheets and cover the space for year round all weather seating area. Looks great, well done.
They can't do that because the struts are level , they would need a slight pitch to do that to avoid water accumulation
I don't know what was better, the result or how adorable you guys were building it. pizza looks delicious.
Aww thanks 🥰
This is a great video ... You both made the process really easy. The outcome ... your reveal... wow!!
Thank you so much 😊

Glad I could help

God people are being unnecessarily rude in these comments.

Hi just clicked on the link and bought the post level gizmo. Been looking for one of these, but didn't know what they were called. Thanks for the links.
Nice job on your pergola.
You’re welcome!
I think a string of lights would look super cute hanging in those posts.
Very well done 👍, I like the colour of your Pergola and your garden chair.
Thank you so much!
Just came across your channel today and loved it so I had to subscribe. You have given me lots of inspiration and ideas. You have a beautiful home.

Awesome! No probs
Currently works out cheaper, only needs 2 coats. We used the Ducksback last year, 4 coats, we have to do it again!
The ooni stuff is a game changer. You can legit make restaurant quality pizza at home! Love it. Ohh and the build came out great 👍

Thank you 🙏 go for it!
Great job and marking with the masking tape is an excellent idea !
A marksmen pen is quicker and easier but obviously don’t always have one to hand, I’ll definitely remember your way in future 😊
I need to invest in this!
Looks lovely it would look nice with some wisteria or honeysuckle I’m hoping to put one up next year. Put your feet up and enjoy 😀x
Great job guys going to do something similar once the weather gets better thanks for showing as has helped me 👍😁
Great job, Shade! This gives me and idea for the small side yard we have that in use for my gardening. Plus, the pergola can be useful for my vining plants to grow on. Thx for the inspiration!😱🤯 🥰❤🤩🔥🥳

If you put a polycarbonate roof on, you can store things under it when it rains.
You both did a fantastic job. :-)
Ah nice! I do want to put a retractable roof on some how!
You seriously are something else...you are the ultimate dream gf...what can you not do?
Respect 👊🏽
Haha thank you
I just started fallowing you and I love all your videos 💗 Your pergola turned out amazing you guys did a fantastic job💗💗
Getting me inspired and energised!! I have been looking for a video like this to help me be able show our builder what we were thinking. Are you leaving the roof uncovered? If not, then what might you use that is robust and does well in British climates. Great video. Thank you.
We left it uncovered last year. Not sure what we’ll do this year. Perhaps some Perspex or polycarbonate roofing sheets! X
Strong bond between the couple good hard work
Brilliant team effort thank you for keeping it real and sharing. I will try to build something similar over my new decking 😊
Thank you!
We have just recently done exactly the same. We have covered ours with a tinted polycarbonate roof and guttering.
Love sitting under it in the rain.
I was just thinking about roofing from watching this do you have a link for your polycarbonate covering?
Absolutely beautiful 💕💕
Can't wait to have a back yard to make one for my family!! 🙏🙏 The outdoor brick oven was genius! 🍕
Thank you for sharing, I love all of your videos 🙌🙌💞💞

Awesome! I stumbled upon you folks channel and love it. I'm all in! Tell me where did you purchase that portable pizza device? Thank you
From John Lewis! Quite hard to get your hands on! It’s an ooni 😋

Thank you 🙏 pizzas were great 👍
Looks great ...fabulous job 👍🎉
Thank you 🙏🏽
Looks really nice, BUT, As the Pergola is attached to the side of the house and next to the boundary of your property, surely you need to apply for and receive planning position, ideally BEFORE you construct!
So Helpful!! Can’t Like This enough! I’m hoping to do similar but I want roof to angle down. I want a lean to green house. This is so similar tho! ❤️
Really loved this pergola simple n effective makes me think a bit mmm....straight from south auckland nz thank you loved it.
Wow that string spirit level is a touch! Just grabbed one. Hope you do well from your Amazon associates 🙏

Hahahahaha I am actually obsessed with this comment 🤣
May have missed this but how much for the materials? Looks great! Can’t wait to have a go
Very good guys, well done 👏
Wow excellent vid, thanks for sharing.....looks amazing.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Can’t wait to get into my house and start DIY projects like this!
Have you an idea of the cost to build this ? You have both done a brilliant job should be very proud ! Thanks for the video x
Thank you love! All in all probably about £400?
Really nice job. Well done.
Thank you very much!
An impact driver would probably help a lot getting those large screws into the timber and wall, looks great though well done
Defo! We got one eventually but wish we had one at the start of this project 😅
Looks good although I would be hesitant attaching the ledger to a brick wall. As brick wall are generally only meant to support the load above it and nothing else.
Are your post below the frost line? If not how has the ledger held up over the years?
me too.. can’t wait
That was really pretty.
Thank you 😊
Very nice! Loved it!
