HOLY CRAP you've blown my mind with the AI comparison
That totally explains the "My arms are too long" and "For some reason the arms are difficult" because there's been a long running trend of AI having difficulty with people's arms/hands

My 91-year-old grandma asked me about Doctor Who this weekend, she's never watched it in her life, so it's obviously inescapable right now!
Edit: I'm the Dominic whose Twitter reply Billy read out, and my opinion has become a lot more positive (not that it wasn't positive already) since I gave that initial reaction :)

I think the opening scene was just to squeeze something into these three episodes that was a bit of Doctor/Donna fun silliness like they had back in series 4. It was nice to have the Doctor to say "don't, no, really don't" again, and then join in with Donna. There's not going to be much opportunity for that humour/levity across the three episodes. I also suspect "mavity" will have some unintended consequences and get some pay-off in Ncuti's first series or something.

Don't see what the fuss was all about. Tennant and Tate were great, of course, but it didn't grab me. Just found the story more of a filler episode. Watchable but (at least to me) not a classic.

TBH I didn't get that the Tardis told him Fake Donna's arm was too long. I thought it was the Doctor's innate abilities that meant he sensed it was wrong. "I can feel all of time and space, the movement of the planet..." etc etc

Yeah, I just assumed that he was too stressed to notice it sooner, and then he spots it when he's relaxing in the TARDIS.

Wild Blue Yonder a jolly war song about rushing into the unknown
Proof that humans can hold two things in their heads at the same time and the not things can’t
How the not things only hear the negative aspects of our universe because the love letters don’t travel far
The Doctor being cheerful on first glance but hiding sinister stuff underneath

Still a 4 outta 10 for me the story idea was great they just could have done a lot more with the situation the Doctor & Donna were in . Where was the scary parts we were promised apart from the liquify & distort tool on After Effects being wayyyyyy over used on their faces 😂. The only thing I have to be grateful for is that it’s a beautiful Tardis set and that’s my favourite thing that RTD has done so far in this era .

Yeah I rated it 5 myself. People are saying it's experimental but it feels too safe for me. Has a weird concept but they don't really explore it enough and so the episode feels too generic and it ends up making it feel like a mid season episode rather than an anniversary special

@@peterthompson1989 Absolutely I said the same thing and I don’t want to put it down in any way I’m very glad as Matthew says here that the show is still being made it’s kind of my own fault for going into it with my hopes so high. If this had of been a mid season story I woulda thought YES this is great, but for the 60th I just feel a little bit deflated if that’s the right word lol 😂 Anyway it’s not over yet as they say… next week might make the 60th episodes somewhere I wanna revisit …..time will tell 😉

@@MylesD1 yeah it's annoying that others enjoy it and rate it 10 out of 10. I want to rate it higher and will have to rewatch it and just see it as it is.
But I don't know, I felt something felt off with the doctor and Donna from the start, like they where playing parody versions.

@@peterthompson1989 yes 👍 I felt like they were trying their best to be enthusiastic that they were back in their roles but there was a kind of undercurrent of boredom or something I’ve watched it 3 times now and it’s still a 4 outta 10 maybe it will change with time .That Tardis set is what will keep me watching its just gorgeous I just wish the crew were different lol 😆

Excellent story!! Loved it!! Great build up throughout. The iffy CGI I felt helped the story feel that bit more unsettling which was great. David and Catherine were on top form as always - soooo good.
The Flux conversation was brilliantly handled, the doctors emotion was insane! I now understand what affect the Flux has now.
It was so emotional to see Wilf again, absolutely loved the character. Although I'm excited for Ncuti and Millie, I really don't want Tennant to leave just yet. David and Catherine are brilliant in these stories and I just want more of them!!
    Great podcast as ever guys.

That was honestly incredible. Very scary, very awesome, well-written standalone episode. Absolutely brilliant, definitely gonna wind up being one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. Very reminiscent of Midnight. Tennant and Tate killed it once again.
Also seeing Wilf again was so nice. Shame that’s all he was able to film before Bernard passed, but that little bit was lovely.
The Timeless Child and Flux mention was interesting as well. Love that Russell is continuing with that, and how 14 is 10 BUT with all the memories of everything that’s happened from 11-13, plus all the maturity that comes with that. Playing with The Doctor’s memories like that was messed up.
I’m not ready to see Tennant go again, but if the rest of Russell’s second tenure is this good, I can’t wait for what’s to come.

The "skateboard TARDIS" reminded me of "Runaway Bride" when 10 is poking out of the TARDIS alongside Donna's wedding limo. Purely coincidence I'm sure, but it still tickled my nostalgia.

I'm positive both Elizabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney got one in series 6.
I loved this story, the acting is on point. As a person who didn't like 10, I love 14! The flux scene was so well done and so heartbreaking for the doctor. The wilf at the end broke my heart.
The janky cgi I thought added an extra level of creepiness. I actually felt for the ships captain, and I am not going to lie. I expected 14 to say I'm so sorry like 10 used to do.
I thought the issac Newton bit was funny. I don't get why people are up in arms about it not being a white person playing it and then being up in arms when 14 says he's hot. What is issue???
My biggest question about the giggle is where and when does the doctor get the jukebox? Is it when he's still 14 or does the tardis think the 15th needs one once he's regenerated? I also did the warm lighting at that clip.

I really loved this episode, so good in so many ways.
For me the "My arms are too long" line holds the same dread as "Who turned out the lights." A simple sentence but holds so much weight - love it.
I never really get scared with Doctor Who but something about the large hands made me genuinely really uncomfortable. Maybe something to do with the sound design but it was all just so creepy I loved it so much!!

So far, these episodes give the impression that the spin off rumour isn't true. It definitely feels these are being written with the mindset they don't have these actors for long so Russell wants to make the most of them, which makes the small scale nature of these stories feel fitting. If it is happening, I'll be disappointed not only would it undermine Ncuti but also these three specials given the main selling point has been having these actors back, then I feel the 60th could've pushed the boat out more.

This episode put me in mind of my earliest impressions of Doctor Who.
When I was growing up in the early 00's and just knew Doctor Who as some old TV show that used to scare people back the olden days, this was what I imagined the show was always like - not seeing the wonders of the universe or fighting evil or making new friends or living life to the full - just weird, unnerving shit happening all the time.
    I loved it.

  • @dc63productions88

Absolutely adored this episode. There was some wonky CGI but that didn’t detract from just how brilliant and tense this episode was and the fact that still did so much practical work in an episode that was shot almost entirely in studio was just mind blowing. The editing of the reveal that there is two Doctors and Donna’s is just superb I called it the moment it cut to 14 fiddling with the water controls and I was watching it my my mate and I just turned to him and said “there’s two of them” and my mate was like what? Then when the reveal happened we were both just taken back by the creepiness of it

  • @treeblopez
    @treeblopez 9 місяців тому

I thought the point of the pre-titles bit was to lull you into expecting something light and cosy - when what follows is creepy and disturbing. It's more unsettling because of the tonal shift. RTD did something similar with It's a Sin and Stephen Fry - it's light and fun and suddenly goes very dark. It pulls the carpet from under your feet. I wondered if the Wild Blue Yonder song was a similar idea - and a metaphor for the programme itself. Will thought it wasn't suitable for children. Mrs Bean thought it was "jolly". Maybe it's both? You think it's light and fun and then bad things happen. Newton is also called back with the heat-into-mass thermodynamics stuff. It's a nice joke but it's also faintly disturbing that you can make one wrong move - you land on top of Isaac Newton by accident - and you've renamed gravity mavity. That also seemed to both a jolly joke and something a bit unsettling.

The ship's corridor and it's reconfiguring put me in mind of Dino Crisis 3. Also Event Horizon as well as the films that RTD said it was riffing on i.e. The Thing and Alien.
I do wonder whether a post watershed version of this should have been made. An alt version as it were.
The show being on at tea time must be careful not to be too graphically horrific after all. Waters of Mars was toned down for that reason.

The thing is with saying that the takeaway should be that Doctor Who is still here, is that Doctor Who isn't really still here. It might be back going forwards and one can hope but this was the first episode in years, and years, that actually truly felt like Doctor Who. The vast majority of New Who is nothing like this, the vast majority of New Who is closer to your Buffys and your Sherlocks and not so much Doctor Who.
Sometimes I see people in the fandom talking as if anyone with any complaints is being unreasonable, but really it's not an overreaction to say that Doctor Who probably wouldn't be known for Tennant and Piper snogging on a beach or "bow ties are cool", character drama and monster of the week filler episodes, if it had stuck to the broad identity it had in the original series.
