  • Join me for a tour of my current Traveler's Notebook setup, and a talk about keeping just one book that gets...surprisingly psychological.
    If what I say in this video offends you, please know that no offense is meant. I'm not calling anyone mentally ill here, and I understand that while keeping a super-slim planner works for me, it's not going to be a solution for everyone. I included the later part of this video rather than just sharing a straight planner tour because I myself have benefited from the type of self-examination I describe here, and while I'm not at all qualified to offer medical or psychological advice, I'm sharing my experience and my thoughts in the hopes that others might be inspired to see whether self-examination might help them too. And as always, whether your planning system includes one notebook or one shelf full of notebooks (or more!), planning should ALWAYS be tailored for YOU - because otherwise there's no point.

    I know some people might not agree with you but I love how you said, self examination is key. I'm trying to cut down to the basics to not let my planning take up so much time. 👍🏻

    Amen! The conspicuous consumption and 'keeping up with the jonses' aspect of the planning community has always bothered me. I mean, clearly some folks like having ALL the things in ALL the notebooks with ALL the accessories but it's just not for me., nor could I afford it! Kudos for making the vid, it's a breath of fresh air.

      And for some folks, that's totally legit! I know that some people who deal with chronic illness or other conditions often use a lot of books to track various aspects of their physical or mental health and have an easier time with paper than with a digital alternative.
      For myself, any aspects of my mental or physical health that need tracking I can do (and prefer to do) with apps, not on paper. Paper is reserved for the things I *love* to do by hand: keep track of my calendar, and write my stories. Nothing else needs to be on paper for me. (Plus, apps are so good at compiling overviews and showing me trends over time, which is super useful!)
      For me, my EDC is functional above anything else. Beautiful, too, but it doesn't exist for the sake of having a glorified scrapbook - it's a working book. There are a lot of planner folks who keep planners more as an outlet for creative decoration than for planning or anything else that's productive beyond the scope of keeping the planner itself, and that's fine too. But you hit the nail on the head - that style is so prevalent that a lot of newbies end up thinking they *need* to have a billion books to be doing it "right", and what's "right" really comes down to what's right for YOU.
      Thanks for watching!! ^_^

      I appreciate your course correction in this comment, but it's hardly enough. You are fortunate to be healthy and able-bodied. You also have no children. So incredibly intolerant of you to cast aspersions on others who enjoy or need their planners in a way that differs from your own. How many times did you straight up say that people should consider getting mental health evaluations??? The true test of tolerance and maturity is allowing more than one thing to be true. I happen to carry one book as well, but mine doesn't look like yours and that's fine. My 19yo son with several chronic progressive illnesses, tracks all of his medical life on paper. The rest of his life is digital - everything that can be digital is in the cloud. He is the opposite of you. Does that make you wrong, of course not. And I'm glad he didn't watch this video and walk away questioning his mental health. I have to say, I'm so disappointed that you have joined the ranks of slamming others to make yourself feel better.

      Mare Biddle I'm truly sorry that judgment and aspersions are what you took out of this video, the point of which is not at all to judge but rather to say that IF you are looking to simplify your planner carry AND you are having trouble doing so, THEN it MAY be worth examining your priorities and judging whether a need for control, often born out of anxiety (which I deal with myself, along with depression) is causing you cling to several more notebooks than you want or need to. But this is only for people who are trying and failing to slim their planners down! People who love to have fat, heavy planners with bookmarks clacking and eight pens stuck under the elastic, or people who track chronic illnesses or their kids' activities on paper, more power to 'em!! I don't understand it and I could never carry anything that chunky, but that doesn't make them wrong, and the beauty of planning is that it should always be whatever each individual user needs it to be! So if your son deals with chronic illness and he needs - or even if he just wanted - to surround his life in paper trackers, that's entirely his business and his choice. I don't judge him, because I don't know his journey and it's none of my business in any case. I wish you both the best, and again, I'm sorry that you chose to take offense and personal judgment out of this; that was never the intent.

    Excellent video! Had to subscribe because you reminded me of why I wanted a TN to begin with: Simplicity. Speaking personally life is chaotic enough adding more chaos is unhelpful. Thank you for sharing your video :)

    I watched your vid a when it came out & have been pondering on what you said for a couple of days. I know for myself, having a chronic illness that I can't control, it does have an impact on my planning. I looked at what I had set up for July 👀 a tracker for how much I slept, water, vitamins - no wonder my Midori was getting chunky! I took them all out. All of it. I can use a digital app for my medical care & not feeling the pressure of carrying it around with me. Very inspired post 🙌🙌

      Dragonflykeep Vlogtinis I'm so glad it helped! Chronic illness can take a LOT of tracking, but digital is such a good option if you want to slim down your notebook! ❤️❤️❤️

    This whole video is sooooo great! One book July pro over here! I'm not consistent with the things I love. I'm lazy. I don't really do anything. I love your approach. Planning in its simplest forms. I need this, I'm trying this. It's just so hard to stay motivated! Thank you for this video, it was great.

    Preach!! This video really speaks to me. I have felt the "need" to have the 6 inch spine and a notebook for every little thing and it really overwhelms me.. but I wanted it because everyone on Instagram has one 🙄 but everything you said just put everything into perspective. ☺️☺️☺️

    Your so right. I switched to ONE book for the month of July and I loved it. But I didn't like the weight of carrying everything with me all the time so I'm switch to the Tn (maybe) but I was having the hardest time because I didn't want a bunch of inserts. I realized it was because most planner videos on the TN usually have one notebook for every sub category, while putting something things together in one will help. I'm excited to try my new system to see if I can work with it.

    Thank you for this video, you really put words to my feelings about especially tracking! Needed it for some time but not anymore, so I dropped 99% of my tracking mid-June and haven't looked back. Now I only do the daily reminders on an app. :)

    I love your notebook and this whole video. You said a lot of what I was thinking. I have brought so many planners over the last two years and I have just been overwhelmed by them. Too much color makes me feel like things are too cluttered. I recently decided to try a travelers notebook. I had seen them before on UA-cam but like the planners, it seemed overwhelming to just have so much based off of the videos that I saw. I plan on purchasing one next year after my planner runs out but mine will be so simple since I just want to have a writer's notebook/memories book, a calendar, and something to track my spending/budget. I can't do all of the decorating and six+ inserts. It all seems like too much.

    All those pretty Planners! God love 'em. I tried to be a pretty planner but it's just not who I am. I love to watch their videos! I think for some it's more of a hobby, so they don't mind the time it takes. Ideas that you have for book just go in your journal?

    This was an interesting perspective. I do think it's important to keep in mind that people plan their days on paper for all kinds of different reasons. For myself, I'm an adult with ADHD. That means my executive functioning skills need a big assist and I have a real problem with remembering things. If I didn't keep my habit tracker in front of me and check it at least 4 times a day, I would forget key things, like taking my medication. So having that list of 7 things that I track daily is just a necessity in order to help compensate for my disorder. Definitely something that I'm responsible for being in control of!
    I think if you are a person with a very strong working memory, not many distractions during your day, and a very simple lifestyle, then you wouldn't need to fill up your time with planning things that don't really need to be planned. And it's okay for you to keep it very simple and be grateful that's all you need to be happy and productive.

    • @LeilaAMMartin
      @LeilaAMMartin  7 років тому +2

      JennyMaine Absolutely! Planning should be whatever you need it to be, whether that's one book or ten (or more!). My point here is that if you're looking to simplify your paper EDC and struggling, some self examination may help. Some people may be able to find ways to cut down that work for them (like giving up books or taking some trackers digital); others may not. But planning is personal and your system should be all about your style and what works best for you.

    While I don't need 10 books, when you have too much going on its easy to forget to do something or not plan properly. Hence more than what YOU have going on. I get that you don't get that, and that's ok. But to assume that we all have a mental problem because we have more books than you do is not right and not true.

    • @LeilaAMMartin
      @LeilaAMMartin  7 років тому +3

      Shawnee Wind As I mentioned, everyone needs to do the planning that's right for them. Some people need 27 notebooks to keep track of things. My point is that if you're someone who would really like to pare down but find yourself struggling to do so, it may be worth some self-examination to find out why it's so hard. Planning is a control thing - keeping to-do lists and trackers are, if nothing else, a way of controlling yourself an how you interact with your environment. Some folks who might be struggling to pare down may find that they don't need to be controlling quite so much, therefore possibly eliminating some books. Obviously if you aren't trying to pare down, the whole thing is moot - just because I don't understand having that many books doesn't make the method invalid. Planning is a personal thing, so always make sure you use the right method for you!
