Loved the reaction and analysis. As a fairly long time Anaal Nathrakh fan, just wanted to highlight a few things. In the studio, the band is just Dave Hunt (vocals) and Mick Kenney (Guitar anbd everything else). Live they have a roster of kind of rotating performers, depending on who is available. The second vocalist here is actually playing bass, and is known as "Drunk". His first name is Duncan but I've forgotten his surname. - As another commenter mentioned he's the lead vocalist of Fukpig. Drunk has been a fairly standard live player, but drums and lead guitar tend to float around.
In the past, Dave, Mick and Drunk were in a kinda grindcore/death metal band called Mistress, but that's another story.
Anyway, they do use some recorded playback to augment their live sound - that's not a criticism, as frankly the depth of their sound would be hard to recreate purely live. That does help with the layering of the choruses. In the studio everything is Hunt, but live it's a combination of Hunt, Drunk and playback.
In terms of lyrics, until their last album Anaal Nathrakh have not produced any official lyrics, so it's basically pieced together by fans. Hunt is a *very* intelligent guy though, and recently completed a PHD in philosophy I believe, but he pulls influences from all over.
I'm a slight Anaal Nathrakh fanboy at times.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 роки тому +6

Being a fanboy is fine, especially when you can provide such information and context to someone's experience. So thank you for all of this as it helps me understand the group better. And you're right that it's not a bad thing to use backing tracks during live performances. Not every band is thinking about *how* they'll perform something live when they're making music -- they just want to make the best music they can. It's wild that the vocalist has a PhD in philosophy though. I mean, it shouldn't be wild but it's such a rarity to hear about musicians putting so many years towards anything except their music.

Thanks for the review and reaction to your favorite band, sometimes it's interesting to see how other people rate similar music.
I have been a fan of AN since 2009. On studio recordings, they don't compare to any of the metal bands. Their approach to writing, the crossing of genres, the huge variability of extreme and clean vocals combined, in an extraordinary way, make my heart beat stronger. On studio recordings, they mix a lot and overlay vocals in layers, it happens that 3-4 vocal tracks can go on one track at the same time and all this is done by the main vocalist Dave Hunt. Unfortunately, it will not be physically possible to pull all this live. Therefore, since about 2010, they have been using at concerts as support for the second vocalist, part-time bassist Duncan. I haven't heard such perverted vocals with abrupt changes from any other band, in addition to everything, there is a lot of expression at the output. I don't like modern core vocalists who master the basics of extreme vocals under a carbon copy and use the same technique with a minimum of self-expression.
It is difficult to characterize An in general by any genre because they get out of the rut very much. I would say that the albums from 2007 to 2018 were very much in step with the times with modern metal using all its chips, but the main basis using their signature sound has always remained and remains to this day, they have a very bright signature.
P.S. Dave performs most of the songs entirely by himself, for example at the same Rockslide 2013 concert ua-cam.com/video/OjMjcexnpKk/v-deo.html

Anaal Nathrakh are the kind of band that are very difficult to place genrewise, and really are there own thing, they are certainly blackened in some ways, but also undeniably contain death, grind and industrial influences, depending on release some of those might even be above the “blackness”, the second to last album “Forward!” feels almost djenty at times and definitely leans toward the industrial end of the spectrum and the latest one takes alot of melodic death metal influence, almost to a fault imo
EDIT: also, while I think it’s a practice they recently stopped for the last two or just the last release, Anaal Nathrakh purposefully don’t release their lyrics, and they sing multilingually, with passages in english, latin, german and even french (I think).
EDIT 2: the second to last release is called “A New Kind of Horror”, my apologies

    • @Donnerwamp

Just a minor nitpick: The second to last album isn't called "Forward!", that's a song on that album. The album is called "A New kind of Horror". Just was a little scared for a moment I missed a release. :D

  • @goodkingp7925

Fun reaction Bryan despite the iffy recording. Yeah, regarding the beginning, Dave has a very wry/dark British sense of humour. That comes across occasionally in the music. There is a reference to Monty Python in one of their songs, even.
As mentioned by others the main vocalist does all the album vocals. At some points there are like 5 or 6 vocal tracks at any given time. He has a great range including an impressive falsetto that shows up once in a while. Post-processing is used on some of those layers too to provide effects. Since you asked about the lyrical content it's indeed generally dark/apocalyptic. On the most recent album (Endarkenment) they did actually publish some lyrics finally - which in the case of the title track are a critique of the increasing modern rejection of enlightenment principles (well worth watching the video).
In terms of clean vocals probably only about 1/3 of their songs have them, but there is usually a sense of melody among the chaos provided by some aspect in either the chorus or verse even with no clean vocals present ('Of Fire and Fucking Pigs' and 'Make Glorious the Embrace of Saturn' from this same album, Vanitas, are good examples of that). I think Vanitas would be the best choice of AN album for a full reaction in terms of showcasing a lot of aspects of their core sound, but you could make a strong case for a number of their albums.

With regards to why Anaal Nathrakh don't post lyrics (the details may not be accurate as it's been a few years). I was in the 'Nathrakh Lyric Research' facebook fan group. Around when their 'Endarkenment' album came out, they stated they didn't post lyrics previously because they didn't want to get sued from the lyrical content, and although they do support fans theorising what the lyrics are, they do have a problem with people posting lyrics and being mislabeled as official lyrics when it is inaccurate. So now in the facebook group, you have to sign an NDA to not post these theorised lyrics anywhere else if you want access to the lyric documents.
Although I do like their music, what I believe to be a stupid reason for not posting lyrics and the lengths fans has to go through now to theorise the lyrics leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
