PodGo: Using the FX Return and Real Cab on a real amp.
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- In this video we discuss using the PodGo running into the FX Return of your real amp vs Running into the amps normal input. By doing this it allows you to bypass the tone stack inside your real amp, and allows the preamps in the PodGo to sounds like they intended.
Any questions please feel free to comment below.

I've been using my Pod Go like this with my Marshall ValveState VS100R combo. That particular amp has a "FX Loop Level" switch and "FX Mix" knob so I also have control over the volume on the amps end. Pretty cool. I also highly recommend that amp for use with the Pod... it's inexpensive, great tones, and built in the UK like a proper Marshall should be!
Exactly same happened to me while playing with real amps..The sweet patches i made at home sounded so crap.. Finally, realised that I need to plug in to the fx return
Yep... and deactivate the cab block!
I've been using a method I haven't seen mentioned in any vids or docs - I move the cab block to the end of the chain, preceded by a mono fx block, take the fx send to the amp fx return. I have to set the pod go fx send volume to about half, and set the mix to 50-50 so I get output to both the guitar amp (from the send) and to FOH from the main outs... It seems to work really well for me
So if you moved the fx block to before mod and delay/reverb, you could get wet/dry/wet? Dry amp and stereo wet to FOH?
It sounds awesome with the real amp. There's no Line6-specific digital tone in your patch sound^^. Really good job.
Like this so much better than using the 4 cable method. Thanks! One question though....what global settings do you use for ins and outs? I found that on main out level , line is much louder than instrument?
I take it that you're not a fan of the 4 cable method? Like you I am using the 2-cable method and so far I'm pleased. Only difference is I use the AMP OUT to the amp Return since the cabinet is automatically disabled, if the cabinet block is at the end of the chain. At times I may hook up to PC monitors or an FRFR amp and will need the cabinet but will connect using the MAIN OUT.
Either way works.
Apologies for leaving a second comment within 5 minutes, but after I typed out mine, I saw you reply saying you don't get notified on replies to replies. Anyway, I have a Champion 100. I saw you respond to someone else saying use the PWR IN as opposed to the PRE OUT. So in that other comment, I asked this: "...in the video, you connect it to the FX return, but you mentioned here that it it the PWR in. (which is the FX in/send, no?) - I have the same amp, and I don't know if I am just confused about this. Are combos handled differently, or am I just thinking wrong?"
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial thanks for your reply. Appreciated
Thanks. I tried this and it works better.
Thanks, great video and explanation - my Bogner likes it!
That sounds friggin KILLER!!!
What a GENIOUS!! You reinvented the wheel for good!! That's the way to use the Pod's amps with a real Cab. If I would like to add a Line 6 DL4 to that set, where would you recommend me to connect it?? Thanks! PS: Just a little suggestion with the tittle of the video... could be "Using Pod Go's amps with a real Cab through Fx Return (I think that would catch more eye). Cheers!
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Thanks for the reply. Would you recommend to connect it to the Pod's fx loop?
Jason Constantine Absolutely! I have my pod on the way. I always wondered if I could use the Pod’s amps with my real amps speaker. Thank you so much.
Great sound, I really like your pod go tutorial! My only complain about the unit is that the ampout is not as good as the main out. In the return of poweramp it's good using the main out without cabsim like you do in this vid, but very harsh using the ampout.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial yes that's how i use it, in a power amp. I solve the problem by using a parametric EQ just after the amp. It acts like doing another global EQ. Because the global EQ dont affect the ampout, that's why my sound was not good
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial OK = I'm new to this and a bit lost here - I thought the effects return on the Amplifier did actually go the the power amp section of the amp. Can you explain the difference please - or where my confusion lies? Thanks,Rob.
Jason - Did you have the amp model (or preamp model) turned on when you went into the front of the amp? That means that you were stacking 2 preamps, and it won't sound the way it was intended. This is the dilemma I have been discussing with a friend. If you are getting your tone from the amp model, going into the return makes sense, but going into the input doesn't, even if you disable the cab. To have ultimate flexibility, use a clean amp model, and a clean amp, and get the rest of your tone from the emulated pedals. That way, whether you go into an FRFR (amp and cab on), or into the input of an amp (amp and cab off) or the return (amp on, cab off), your tones should all be at least close.
But if you turn off the preamp in the chain (as well as the cab) can you go into the main amp input and not lose or affect tone? I have an old bassman and there is no fx loop. 😬
@@fairweatherfriends. What are are asking about is essentially using the POD Go for just its effects, which is perfectly fine. Although the HX Effects might be a better choice for that arrangement due to some added flexibility in your effects signal chain. But sure, it will be like having a traditional pedalboard in front of your Bassman.
interesting points. Can you turn off completely the preamp/amp in the pod go?
@@fherdelpino You cannot remove them from the signal chain (unless you want to hack the json files), but you can turn them off so that they don't impact your tone. You would have to do this in any preset that you wanted to use without the amp/cab.
Great video, cheers man! Sounds great!
Jason, thank you for taking the time to help,it's appreciated.
That made a world of difference. The res.and presence colors allot on these l.b. amps as you well know..Im much, much closer to my goal tone.
A little history,,,,,I've stayed away from m.p.units until now because I was intimidated by the tech....im in my late forties.lol.Iv all these pedals revv3,revv4 on and on.never quite dialled in.Different versions of the same circuit?
As far as tone shaping further,I need to be immersed in Global settings?
What is the purpose of getting a multi effects like Pod Go or any other if most of us want to use it via the tube amp for the sound quality?
Buying the Pod Go and using the tube amp has defeated the purpose of the multi effects..
Your opinions please. Thanks
Playing live I like to have a real Amp and when I’m recording I like to be able to customize that aspect of the sound. More functionality and more options is always a good thing for me and that’s why I bought a pod go
You just use the power amp section of the amp. Everything else is coming from the Pod. And the PodGo's effects and tones are likely better than the amp's original tones.
You have the volume on your pedal anyways....You have the ultimate gear for your money right there..
whats your pod go settings for this demo? sounds excellent
I do this with a Orange Poweramp. With both Outputs its Sound very bad. What is my mistake? Hmmm .the Pod is new and i use only the Presets inside the pod . Greetings from Germany, Carsten
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial need to dial this in as soon as I get my Pod Go! Can you also share the settings on the amp?
Jason have you tried the four cable method yet?
I just bought the 50 watt 6l6 2x12 so most likely going throught the signal loop for your Mod, Delay, Reverbs s and using the Pre/Post gain modes helps
I went ahead and bought the Head Rush G4
What the difference in performance between the single amp and the amp/or is it a pre amp and speaker setup you have in the EVH?
Not sure what you mean.
Just ordered the pod go lol was doing this with the pod hd with great results.
Great video, thank you.
Would it sound better if you changed it to the preamp only on the POD because it’s using the power amp on your amp?
Sounds really cool Jason
Do you use the preamp versions of the amps on Pod Go or use the full amp model ?
As someone who has a Pod Go and almost about to buy a 5150 LBX Stealth that was very interesting. In a small recording environment can you see any issues running the LBX into a load box/DI and then into the Pod Go for cab sims/IRs to negate the need to mic a cabinet? If it's all too much I might just get one of those Blackstar St James 6l6 heads that has inbuilt loadbox and cab sims. Appreciate your content!
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Thanks Jason.......that's another consideration. I think the pricing is a bit different out here in Australia..........amps with an inbuilt load box like the Blackstar St James/ H&K Tubemeister 20 can be had for far less than a combined LBX and Captor but in the end if I want that specific LBX Stealth sound that's obviously the way I need to go. Cheers.
Hi! When I connect a cable from POD go (either Amp out or Main out) to FX return of the Amp, there is no sound coming out. Please, do you have thoughts on why is that?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Thanks Jason. It seems that you have to plug any jack in Input of Blackstar in order to engage FX loop. Quite unusual, but it works.
Blackstars are Notorious for this.
What an amazing video! :O
Hey man nice tutorial, what riff did you just played>?
On the pod go
What is the amp out for ??? Will it sound good going into the front of an amp or isn’t that good because of the amp simulation coming out of the pod go
doing same with my hughes&kettner tb18, people just remember you need to be plugged into the line out in the back of the Pod Go(NOT amp out)
if you have it in Amp out you cant control the volume on the Pod Go.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial my hughes & kettner volume on amp doesnt work when going into return
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial im talking about the volume on the Pod Go. the pod go volume only works on the head phones and line out.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial well at least give

Hi Jason, Thank you for your vids. I found them very useful.
The volume issue when connected to the loop, occurs only on your amp?, or is this issue common in other amps when you try this configuration?
Did you have the chance of trying the Pod Go connected to a Power Amp? Is the Volume problem present too? Im thinking in the Mooer Tube Engime to engage the pod go to a Regular Cab.
Thanks in advance !
Hi, if I'm using my amp out, the volume knob is not working and it works when I'm using the headphones out. Do You know what can be the problem?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial I've contacted Line 6 for this and they said "When only using an amp, you can also use the left main out. Then please make sure to set the main out level to "instrument" (global settings)." and this works, just like it does with the headphones out.
Dude thank you. This was one of the things that I felt like would be obvious information but I couldn't find any explanation on how to completely bypass the amps preamp and just get the sound of the pod go. My only question is are you using the main out or the amp out?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Which output were you using on the pod go? Were you using the Main out or the Amp out or does it matter at all?
I like the front of the amp tone, can it be beefed up with the EQ?
great video dude!! thanks a lot for this, pd: keep the wife happy with lower volumes :D haha

i think it sounds better than way too. Do whatever you like. there are no rules. It wont hurt anything :)
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial agree
Thank you. How do you set the volume not using the pedal. Or by using the effects return that makes the pedal void? Thank you in advance and THANK YOU for helping us mental mdgets...LOL
Just to be clear your using the main out of the pod into the FX return of your amp right? Do you need to do anything in the pod go to do this?
Have you tried the 4 cable method?
I think there is a global output setting for different inputs....ie line in or hiZ front of amp???
I run the Pod Amp Out into the FX return as well, but the Master Volume control on the Pod Go is bypassed when I connect it this way! I need to control the volume through the amp model settings in the pod and it's quite inconvenient...am I missing something here? Do I go Main Out instead of Amp Out? Sigh...
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Thanks Jason! Much appreciated.
Trying this method but the volume is really loud and the knob doesn't control the volume. I tried shutting the volume pedal off but it stays loud. Any thoughts?
Found the problem. I was running into the amp out instead of main out.
So you shut off the cab IR do you need to switch from full amp to just the preamp in the preset?
This is a demonstration sorely missing around here. I exchanged my PodGo for a Boss Katana Amp. Now I’m feeling like I should go back to the Pod. I could NOT get my tone to sound natural, but then again I was plugging in 4 cables and shit! Looks like you’ve just gone 1 cable into the FX Return??
I really wanted to like the Pod, but it sounded like ASS on my amp. I tried all the weird setups they recommended. My head doesn’t have a power amp - in
Do you really believe your setup (in person) sounds like a genuine amplifier? Mine sounded so processed when I tried.. like I said, I WANT to like the PodGo so bad.
My recomendation would be to keep that Katana and pick up a Pod Go again, connect the Pod Go to the Katana in "four cable method", use the "pre-amp" models instead of the "amp" models and make sure that the "FX loop" block on the Pod Go is bypassed. This way you will be playing the pre-amp of the Pod Go into a real power-amp, which will make it sound great! An added benefit of this method is that you can bypass the "pre-amp" model and enable the "FX loop" block to then use the "pre-amp" model of the Katana, so you are essentially adding an extra channel to your Pod Go. Just make sure that you disable the Cab/IR block or use the Amp Out (and set the Amp Out to come before the Cab/IR block in your global settings) so that you don't accidently add a cab sound to a cab (that will sound like ass lmao).
@@joevstheguitar I’ll need to think about that, but as of now I’ve got my first Marshall tube amp, and I feel I’ve found happiness. For like 10 years I’ve been using an old Crate solid state full stack. My mom had graciously paid $1,000 for it when I was a kid. It wasn’t bad, but this little Marshall is insane.
Thanks though, maybe I will try that down the road!
@@justinTime077 fair does man, I just realised, the Katana 50 doesn't have an FX loop, so if you have one of those then oops 😂 still, the method works with any amp that has an FX loop, by all means you can connect up the Pod Go to your Marshall if it has one and that will create even more awesome tones! What sort of Marshall is it?
@@joevstheguitar Marshall DSL40cr. It rocks! I can’t believe it. I’ve had a 120W full stack Crate since I started as a kid (had a cool mom), and I didn’t know what tube amps were, or brands people loved back then. Jason Constantine and what output would I use? Main out, amp out or something else? Thanks for your help, new to this sort of setup
Jason Constantine I want to basically connect to the speaker portion of the amp so I can bypass and use the amp sims/cabs or jut amps... happy to turn off cabs if I need to..
are you using fx send on the pod to the return of the amp or just an out from the pod into the return of the amp?
I’m so confused. I finally got one today and I’m going amp out with the cab turned off in the settings and it’s as if nothing is working. Every pre set is just clean or off sounding.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial way to take criticism. Lol. I figured it out myself it’s just that no one nor line 6 mentions anything about that so you assume when you have a setting for amp out that it is going to automatically do that.
Now I’ll let ya get back to playing one finger “noob D” riffs. Douche.
Hi! What are you using? Preamp or Amp?
I always use Amp
I watched a video where a guy bypasses the amp and just leaves the preamp. Have you ever tried that? Thanks.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Awesome, I thought that would happen. Cheers!
Quick tip for anyone watching: You don't actually need to disable the Cab/IR if you use the AMP OUT jack on the Pod Go. You'll have to go into Global Settings and set AMP OUT to "Pre Cab/IR". Hope that helps.
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Good point!
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Thank you, that was the issue that I was facing, and just couldn't find out what the problem was. Also: are you using the preamp or the amp block on the pod go when connected to the return of the fx loop on the EVH?
are you using the amp out or the main out on the Pod go?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial this kind of answers my comment that I just posted. So to my knowledge, the Master Volume Control on the Pod Go works for the Main Out signal, but not the Amp Out signal. If this is true, what if you're on a gig, sending the main out to FOH, and your stage volume is too loud with the Amp Out signal? Luckily, my amp's FX loop has a mix knob, but I imagine not all FX loops have this. Anyway, clearly I'm obsessing over this. Lol
@@natesilvamusic What you could do (if you're using amp and cab on stage) is use the main out on the PG to your power amp/cab and amp out to FOH. Set the amp out to mirror the main out and disable all cabs in your presets. OR you can use a volume pedal or EQ pedal from your amp out to control the volume to your power amp fx return.

Jason Constantine sweet. I may get one of these. I plan to run it into my cab with a powerstage 170.. thanks man!
I’m having serious issues with this unit. I have a 214 and when use it plugged in out into a PA it sounds horrible. There’s no output and when I try to increase the level it clips and fizzes. With my electric guitar same thing - i have the knob maxed and the output levels in the editor set high, I can get enough volume but it clips and even the clean sounds are breaking up? Everything on the PA board is set neutral the slider is up pretty high.
Thanks for the help - no I’m using main out mono like it says. However I’m using a 1/4 out into the board. I’m wondering if I should use the balanced 1/4 trs to xlr into pa
Do you have your settings changed from “line” out to “instrument” out in settings, if you’re going straight to PA you want line level it’s a much louder signal than amp levels
Nice one, thanks for this video! Love the PodGo! I've started using the MAIN OUTPUTS and the AMP OUT simultaneously (like in the first diagram of the quick start manual) sending a cab emulated signal direct to the PA and and non cab emulated signal to the front of the amp... making sure that in Global Settings the Amp Out Source is set to Pre Cab/IR (if it's set to Main Out, the real amp will sound shit!) No need to mic up your real stage amp, which can be a good thing in certain gigs. The only sort of bad thing I find doing this is that the volume of the signal going to the front of the amp is really really loud, I have to keep my real amps volume down at 2 or 3! Does anyone know how to reduce the signal output of the AMP OUT on the Podgo!? Many thanks
Chris, I set mine up like you said and it sounds good on my clean effects. However not so good with distortion effects. Sounds more like a 'rattle' instead of distorted tone. The distorted snapshot sounds better through the MAIN OUT into monitor speakers. I've placed the Cab at the end of the chain to fix the EXP volume issue through the Amp. Any suggestions on improving the distortion through the AMP OUT?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficial Great idea! Thanks !
@@bcain5823 Hey! Thanks for your comment... I don't really use the distortion effects on the PodGo at all, for more crunchy/overdriven sounds I just increase the gain on the amp block... I much prefer the sound of the high gain on the amp rather than any of the distortion pedals! Maybe you cpuld try this? Also you could set the Amp Out source to Main Out in global settings and try going from the Amp Out on the podgo to the effects loop return on your real amp if has one? Best of luck
@@ChrisDeJuanMusic Chris, that’s a great idea. I’ll try it. Thanks!
@@ChrisDeJuanMusic So here is my assessment. The issue I'm having could be with type amp I'm using; Ampeg BA-115 bass amp. Probably shouldn't be playing a Gibson SG Standard through it but it's all I have to use. The 'rattle' distortion is happening when setting up the Amp Out Source to Pre Cab/IR. When set back to Main Out the sound is more like what I get out of my monitors but just a little more low end due to this being a bass amp. I know this goes against what Jason says in the video but it works better for me. I think I can refine it more by either tweaking the EQ settings or selecting a more neutral Cab in the Pod Go. Hopefully this observation will help others using a bass amp.
Can you please share your patch?
The amp out is not well designed on this. You need to manually set the cab as the last block in the chain otherwise you won’t have access to them when you set the IR to off in the global settings. Also running the amp out into the effects return of an amp sounds like crud. I can only get it to sound decent by running the amp out into the front of the amp on clean channel with all the eq down. That sounds much better than the amp out into the effects return. It shouldn’t but it does. Also the volume control doesn’t work as previously pointed out. I need to run the main out to the mixer desk for FOH and amp out into the amp for stage monitoring but using the amp out is rubbish and sounds nothing like FOH so I can’t do it I will have to take a monitor feed from the desk. Also why doesn’t the headphone mute the outputs? Kind of the point of headphones. All in all I think the amp out is not what it needs to be and I’m disappointed with the unit do gigging musicians. If anyone can fine a way of getting matched tone from the amp out into the amps effect return (with IR off of course) same as using the main out then I’d be interested to know how. The difference in tone is marked and the amp out sounds horrible. Nothing like the main outs.
