    On Sunday I went to the bookstore and read the back cover of at least 10 books. Now, thanks to today’s bro, I know that I have actually "read" the 20 books. 30 books read in one hour, I am so productive! (And excellent at math and consistency and honesty truth!) 😎

    Self-help books seem to be his favorite. The guy spends so much time finding ways to be productive that so much time is wasted.

      Yeah, I think the pursuit of productivity can become a really dismal cycle.

      I totally agree - I've watched a whole bunch of these 'productivity' videos (from this guy & far worse offenders), and they get really dismal really fast.

    I went over to Ali Abdaal's video, not to watch it but to read the comments (it's the same thing really, innit?) and there are lots of negative comments or joking comments about his video amidst the praise from his acolytes... I guess a lot of the self-help books he 'reads' could be summed up in a page, they are mostly an idea surrounded with a lot of unnecessary fluff.
    I've seen 300 movies this year...well, I've watched the trailers so that counts, right?
    Great exposé, Steve.

    Audiobooks are not effortlessly, I love audio as it allows me to enjoy reading while commuting, or crafting.
    As for making reading effortless, if you enjoy reading it should be effortless.
    Loved this Steve, I didn't watch the original video but I can say with 100% certainly that this video is far superior!

    The thing about Ali Abdel that I don't get is why he's trying to save so much time. All he does is work. Why save time from work to work. Is that really what his Bro followers want? To just work every minute of everyday? To always be hustling for ways to make money every waking minute? That ain't livin' and spending your 20s and 30s working every minute sounds like a nightmare for which no amount of money or social media fame could compensate.

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  2 роки тому +2

      Yes - "grinding" becomes an end in itself - in the videos, that is. In off-camera reality, these grifters spend 15 hours a day zoned off their asses next to their hookahs. Particularly the 'fitness' influencers, who make "rise and grind" videos every week & live off-camera lives that would make Nero blush with shame.

      Ursula Leguin was quite timeless in her essay Why are Americans Afraid of Dragons, in the statement that particularly puritanical ideals mean we are socialized to only value spending our time on what can be monetized, and shun anything done for enjoyment.

    Oh, I just listened to his video on why he left medicine and why he's going back. Basically be doesn't like being just another cog in the machine, but thinks he brings more value with his UA-cam videos. I can't roll my eyes any further back in my head. He's thinking he wants to go back to working part time. He only was 2 years out of uni and a junior doctor.
    He'd make so much more money on UA-cam than heEver would being a doctor. One of the headlines on his videos is him making 100k a month...

    Great video. Lies are bad! I’ve watched a few videos of his and they are full of exaggeration and weird statements like the concept that reading a summary = reading the book. Basically if we’ve read 1000 blurbs we’ve read 1000 books! Yay! Oh no wait, that’s utter garbage. I enjoyed this response video though.

  • @mdavidmullins
    @mdavidmullins 2 роки тому +2

    Yeah, reading is definitely not effortless and who would want it to be? It's the effort that provides the reward. It's true that many of us like audio books, but I bet I'm in the majority when we say we like them because they extend the pleasure of reading, rather than allow us to avoid it somehow.
    Ali Abdaal is a medical doctor, I believe. The few videos I've watched of him seem to me of someone trying to work their way out of the medical profession and into the UA-cam profession. The larger implications for this if multiplied at the societal level are a little chilling. Is it true that there are a bunch of dissatisfied medical professionals looking to break into the realm of video producing?

    I've read on the comment section that HE IS WRITING A BOOK. Isn't it something? Maybe Short Form asked him to write it to have it there, and he is perfectly ok with no one reading it, or reading only a summary, or reading a blog post about it. The audacity of these people is mindblowing. They 'read' crappy books, they promote crappy books, they write crappy books and they avoid reading books at all cost. 🤦‍♀️

      He would certainly say his "book club" concentrates on the 30 or so books he decides to read "properly." But if somebody - even a self-professed millionaire - is willing to shell out money to have books summarized for him, I'm not going to credit that he ever actually reads anything "properly." It's so obvious from his videos: actual reading is something he expects his EMPLOYEES to do.

    Steve, are you telling me that by simply having watched so many of your videos where you describe a pile of new-releases, I have not in fact "read" all those books? Huh. Guess I'll have to edit my Goodreads total for this year then.
    The absolute gall of this cockwomble though: first he tries to say that he sees someone declaring that they have completed reading books in their entirety as a form of showy, peacocking by those who merely want to be seen to reading (okay, fine) but then goes on to say that he's one of the most followed/friended people on Goodreads and hopes to scale that list in the near future? Does he even hear the ridiculousness coming out of his stupid face?
    I think I might have to go set fire to my head after that. But first I need to go scan the blurb of a few Russian epic tomes, so I can add them to my list of books read on Goodreads. (Gotta try and up that social capital, amirite?)
    Yikes.
