I don’t think that there should be rules when it comes to reading books. I read books for entertainment and because I enjoy reading. I don’t set a time limit on how much I read .... oh let me read for thirty minutes or an hour .... no thank you. I don’t need an accountability partner to remind me about how much I have / have not read. I find an author I like and I read their books especially if it’s Penelope Douglas, Crystal Kaswell, April Wilson, Gwyn McNamee. Reading if it’s not for pleasure then it’s certainly not worth starting. “Reading is for the sake of pleasure that it gives and gives alone”.
I like the idea of audiobooks for when I’m doing crafts because it uses a separate part of my brain (I don’t like playing videos in the background because I can’t look at the video), but I just hate hearing people reading to me. I’m very particular about the audiobook reader, and most of the time, I just choose to read physically. I hate when popular channels have misleading titles like that! How do they keep viewers when they overtly lie like that?!
It's been my experience that overt liars can keep - and even increase - viewers as long as they're telling the kinds of lies their viewers want to believe. You see that a LOT in political 'commentary' channels, for instance ...
When some UA-cam presenter is monomaniacally focused on anything and deals in stupid buzzwords I find myself pretty quick to dismiss them because they're pretty dull dudebros. . .
"Might want to check his basement" lol. My kids watch a lot of UA-camrs who talk like this. Check out "Matpat" of Game Theory or Film Theory, for the epitome of this style of talking. I can't even be in the same room when they're watching him. And this guy has millions and millions of subscribers.
I was also recommended that video, but I didn't watch it because I assumed that it wouldn't be very insightful. I assumed that all of his books fall into the category of self-help/productivity. That's my prediction. Now I'm going to watch your video to see much I got right and what I missed. I hope the teenagers you know, Steve, are not like these bros. Or maybe they are, and you are planning to retire at 29 after following their tips.
I don't have any issues with counting audiobooks as reading. I am an atrocious listener and audio books are so long that I am impressed that anyone can prefer audiobooks, and yet many on booktube clearly do and understand what they've heard. But I don't know how honest O'Brien is. He wants to retire at 25, so lying must necessarily be his modus operandi.
Bailing on a book is perfectly acceptable. I have bailed on many books that just irritated me for different reasons. Why should I continue to be irritated? It's just like any other relationship. If the other member of the relationship isn't working for you, bail out.
I know people who say they don’t have time to read, or rather I did know until I became a recluse, and their excuse was they were too busy and even,once, that books were messy. Time? I used to ask whether they watched tv. Of course they did and probably still do. I don’t know why having lots of books was/is equated with mess. I admit to not worrying too much about mess. Clean yes, especially now during this pandemic, but a few more books or craft projects? No. I think there is an underlying fear of learning, if not loathing, a reverse snobbery. Certainly if I ever said I was a classically trained pianist and that I love Bach then I was immediately assumed to be someone to somehow bring down. Sad.
Ah 'the young' are a breed unto themselves. Every generation is, I'm sure. Hype and ego command huge followings. Remember, the younger book tubers doubtless have a larger fan base due to far more youngsters / admirers using the internet 🦉often they are quite money oriented only. I'd avoid watching such channels completely, just so you don't get 'contaminated' by their annoyances.

Gail I have the same experience with audio books. My mind slips away. If this happens with the written word I can pick up where I left off but with audio books that annoying reader doesn't notice and just carries on without me!
