    Thank you for this! I'm having fun messaging Ebay sellers and asking them why their "original super-rare 1971" deck happens to have a web URL printed on the back. That's some pretty bold psychic activity.

    Any RW deck with no copyright is pre-1975 if you look at the back of your pre-1975 you will also notice the word " FORWARD" is spelled "FOREWARD on the post 1975 decks too. Samuel Wieser decks have the blushing fool 1970-1973. Any deck thats older than 20 years old is vintage. The street address on the little white book will tell you the vintage. People replace boxes to older decks all the time. Any 78 card deck with NO copy right is again pre-1975

    Thank you for making this video!! After watching, i went to check eBay, and OMG so many scammers!!! I can't believe it... Thank you for keeping people informed!

    Added info, I have seen decks printed in Switzerland with bar codes as well as copy-rite logos. Also, US Games moved to Stamford, CT in 1986 so anything NY is prior. Given I have seen NY boxes with copy-rite cards, it appears that pre-copy-rite stamping would be even earlier.

      Sam III Thank you for the added info. It can be tricky finding the vintage ones.

      Your efforts here are invaluable. Thanks much. BTW, I found that U S Games moved from NY to Connecticut in 1986 so this can give some sense of a timeline. I also have seen a deck printed in Switzerland with no copyright on the box, NY address, no bar code, but with U S Games stamped on the cards.

      This helped me a little bit, so thank you. My deck has the old font, the new york address, the lighter grey text box, was printed in switzerland, has no fool logo but has the copyright stamp. I was sitting here watching this video extremely confused.
      So, I can at least take satisfaction in knowing my deck is pre 1986 since it was still while they were in New York. I also read they started using the copyright stamps in 1975, so I guess I can narrow my deck down to between 1975 and 1986.

    I skipped on them. I think it would be like the second time I buy from eBay. Seller did not want to go any lower. I really wanted them but he turned down all my offers. I thank you for your time. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.

    Interesting video --thanks! My Waite-Smith deck was purchased in 1985-6 and has some of the older features, but shows a small copyright on the cards for US Games 1971 &, on the box, has an ISBN number. I paid $9.00 for it and still have the lid w/the price tag which also has US Game Systems on the price tag. :)

    So i dunno if this is just me and my family but whenever we pick up this deck, it shows us everything and things we don't ask for or don't want to see. I wonder if this is everyone else's experience with this deck in general. I asked what college is meant for me and it takes me on a ride of at least 20 years into my future of my husband, someone's death and my journey and i'm thinking the entire time, "I DID NOT ASK TO SEE THIS!!"

    • @AngeloNasios
      @AngeloNasios  8 років тому +3

      +angelicbaby92 I never heard of such a thing. It could be more on your interpretations than the deck itself. If it is the deck, by all means I would love to take that deck off your hands lol

  • @autumnisawitch5048
    @autumnisawitch5048 11 років тому +2

    I've been looking around for an older deck and this was super helpful, thanks! However, I'd like to point out that by definition, decks from the early 90s would technically be vintage (being 20 years old or more is what generally qualifies something to be labeled vintage when being sold online - Etsy is more strict about that guideline than Ebay, though). I get that it's probably not what people are looking for when they want a vintage deck, but it could still be considered vintage nonetheless!

    BTW,
    The deck I have is later than your 1st 2. It has PCS's original Fonts but it also
    has the copyright printed vertically (you'll notice below that U.S. Games started to print the copyright date in 1975) in very tiny fonts in the bottom right corner
    of the cards. I would consider a deck from 1975 - 85 still vintage. It also happens
    to be the 1st example of the later cards in the middle of your video. This would be
    the in-between deck you mentioned earlier. When I compare the back of the card it matches your 2nd deck perfectly. What would be the cut-off date for a vintage deck
    in your opinion?

  • @ellieburton5730
    @ellieburton5730 4 роки тому +1

    I own the in-between deck I believe; I don't have the box (I bought it second hand) it has the old drawn font, but it has the 1971 U.S. games copyright.

  • @Winterbagel
    @Winterbagel 10 років тому +1

    This is a very good tutorial - however you are mistaken in one assumption you made about the deck (I believe you showed it from ebay) that had a 1971 copyright on the box back bottom, but no copyright on the cards themselves. Your assumption they were from the 80's or 90's is incorrect - US games began putting their copyright on the card fronts in 1975, so that particular set would be dated between 1971 and 1974.
    All in all an excellent video!
    On a side note, for those interested - the reason you can see the pattern on the sides of new cards and not older cards is because of the precision afforded by digital print processes - older mechanical/manual print processes would have ever-so-slight variations among the backs where the inked details landed during printing thanks to moving parts and manual calibrations - ie: the human touch!

    I have 2 Rider Waite decks that are from the late 60's or very early 70's. No boxes, & only one booklet, original font, no copyright. The booklet has The Wheel of Fortune on the front & back cover & says "Tarot Instructions". There is no info on the booklet anywhere, but does say "Printed in USA". The back of the cards are pale pink irregular wavy stripes with the Egyptian symbol Ankh in the middle enclosed in a dark pink rectangle. The Ankh is the pale pink of the card background. What year?

    I have a UK copy of the Rider Waite deck. The cards are C 1971 USGames, but the writing on the cards is the older style that Smith drew and not the print type like in your newer cards. The back of the cards are in a different style too.
    If you're interesting in taking a look, let me know, and I'll sent you some pictures.

    I wash shuffling through my old deck and noticed the world card is thicker than the rest. Is yours like that too? Mine says it's from university books inc but has no logos and or copyright and has the lighter grey banner on the bottom. The card backs are pink and have an ank on it. So it's not from switching one pattern deck with another.

    Beware.... Some of the Chinese decks don't have copyrights on them either.
    Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal.
    Also, the newer laminated cards don't need to be as thick of cardstock as the older editions. The plastic coating gives them extra protection that the older editions don't have

The back says registered trademark of AGMuller. Made in Belgium for AGMuller Urania. 70 x 120 mm in size. ISBN : 3-905021-32-3. You can buy from Tarot Chest online in the UK. I've referred to this excellent video so many times and found a great vintage 1970 edition without a copyright because of you.
    Recently I have heard that the lion on the Strength card is supposed to have the woman's green wreath continue into his mane? I sort of see that flower design on my card but it isn't subtle green as they claim.

      For anyone else who might read this and want to know: any edition that lists the Stamford, Ct. location was printed after 1990. Before that, they were in New York City. And if the font for the Major Arcana was handwritten, the deck is from before 1995.

    hi Angelo, I have a deck that you confirmed as vintage but I do not have the box or the booklet. what I do have is 1 blank card in the deck and have been sorting them back in what I think is order. I believe they are in between 1970 - 75.
    someday I hope to find the box and the booklet for them. I have no idea how I have them but my exwife had a friend that was into readings with this deck around 1973 and it is possible she gave them to me. would be interested in chatting some time about these cards. have a good one.

    Heya. I’m totally confused now. I thought I bought a rare 1971 vintage deck. But, the magician on the bottom is grey, but no copyright marks. The cards feel like paper, but they do have a copyright in the lower right corner. The print on the cards is the old style like you said the artist did, but I do not have a blushing fool. The address is listed as 38 east 32nd street. No bar codes or websites, by o the back there is a serial number. From the sides there is not a distinct pattern like you show, and the cards are not white from the side, it’s like a mix newer the two, small blue dots appear on the side view. It’s like I have a a version between the vintage and 2002 deck you show. Also, on your last example in the rh video where you show the true vintage deck, you says that the word magician on the bottom of the box is not grey, but it is grey. I’m confused.

      +Gale Sal I have not seen an older deck with the copyright on them. They only appear (from what I see) on later printings. The 70's printings don't have it.

    I bought the newer deck a year ago. I opened it,looked at it put it away and never used it. I bought the older one in 1983 and I dont know what happened to them. Could just kick myself.

    This is great stuff and good to know..thanks so much for making this video. I may have to do a video response to show you my particular deck.. I have had it since I was about 12 years old now and I do not have the original box but since I know how long I have had it ..I know it's vintage...lol.. cus I am too!..lol.. I am noticing some differences however in the magician card that I wish to point out. bare in mind I have had this deck for over 30 years.. so I am curious to get your opinion.

    Dear Angelo, Thanks so much for this video! I have a new Rider Waite deck, but would love to buy a genuine vintage one. Living in Europe (Netherlands) its difficult to find one. Wonder how I can find a reliable online seller. Maybe you know one?

    Love your video. Great info for newbies. I have a question hope you can help. I have an eye on a deck and looks vintage but the address is 38 east, 32nd street not park Ave on the booklet. Are these vintage?

      Carm Men not sure of the top of my head. Is there a barcode on the box? Or web address

    • @carmmen1384
      @carmmen1384 6 років тому

      None at all. The only only thing that is holding me up from buying is that the wand and deck are the bluish color. It's my first deck ever so I don't want to spend too much money on it.

    • @AngeloNasios
      @AngeloNasios  6 років тому

      Carm Men bluish or green? Is the snake around the magician blue? If so that is a set you want to get. Older printing

    • @carmmen1384

      Yes it is and what I like is that the cards are sealed and has that red ribbon around.

    Another difference is the “Forward” on the older, Swiss deck, which is the incorrect word, and “Foreword” on the newer, US Games deck which is the correct word. That’s about the only thing that US Games got right in the re-issue of the “new” deck. Forgive me, I was an English minor in college and my eyes can’t help but trip over gaffes like that.
