    Hi Dave, first, of all, thanks for your channel and your informative videos!
    Regarding the cloudiness with oil based materials. Two things happening here. First, it might be that the oil is not very soluble in alcohol. If this is the case, the precipitation is not solid, but liquid, so literal the oil itself. Second, a component of the oily extract doesn't dissolves well in the ethanol (but sure did in the oil). This shows usually as a solid precipitation, so what you actually described in the video. To solve the first case, try adding more alcohol and hope that the oil might dissolve. Second case, actually try to add more oil, so the component can be dissolved again in the oily part of the perfume. Also here, reaching an equilibrium is the tricky part. Where the relation oil/alcohol is just right in order to dissolve all components properly. Might even simply not happen and the product stays cloudy. Anyway; happy trial and erroring! That's why we all love perfumery so much, isn't it? Creative experiments and unexpected results :)

    Last but no least, and first appearing comment... If you filter your tinctures, try to set the funnel up so that the tip actually touches the inside wall of the glass beaker. That way your filtrate doesn't splatter all over your table ;)

    Two possible reasons why your perfumes go cloudy with vodka tinctures:
    1. Something water soluble but less soluble in ethanol in the tincture will not dissolve properly in the perfume which has a very high ethanol content.
    2. You dilute your perfume with water. So at a point, substances which are not very well water soluble will precipitate, flake out, which makes the perfume cloudy. They don't necessarily come from the tincture itself, but might be already part of the formula.
    To your specific problem mentioned, it's very likely the first option, where you are diluting a quite aqueous solution with pure alcohol and the non alcohol soluble components fall out and make the final product cloudy. Try adding some water back. Maybe you might reach an equilibrium where all components remain dissolved.
    Given to my understanding that vodka can have from 40-55 percent alcohol, so you are dealing with something that contains as much as 45-60 percent of water. That's quite a reasonable amount of water you might add to your alcohol based perfume and vice versa, you dilute with pure alcohol.

      I guess we should put it like it's ill-advised UNLESS you're okay with just messing about with tinctures and essential oils, you don't mind the cloudiness you don't mind if not everything will be dissolved the best way in your vodka, and you're going for the easiest/ cheapest solutions. (I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with this approach.)

      As always, the universal and only true answer is: "It depends..." So, depending on what you try to tincture, using a ethanol/water mixture like Vodka, can make sense, as you might like to disolve water soluble components as well as alcohol soluble ones. By using your tincture in a cosmetic oil/water formula, you totally get away with this, as you have to create an emulsion anyway. But by using it in a almost purely ethanol based final product, you might get issues with cloudiness. As you said correctly, once your product turn's out cloudy, it depends on if you can live with that. When you aim to sell your product comercially, keep in mind that a cloudy perfume most probably will not be accepted by the final consumer. It's so easy sometimes, which makes it awfully complicated, because everything "depends" ;)

    I really want to get my timeshare caught up so I can set up a get away and get together with some fragrance makers. I would love to rub elbows with like minded makers.

    Hello, if you don’t mind me asking where do you get your materials from? I’ve seen a lot of UA-camrs with the blue bottles and I’m curious as to where you get those

    When filtering a perfume, should we expect a substantial loss of alcohol - through evaporation, as the process takes... some time?

    • @ManuelHefti
      @ManuelHefti Рік тому

      Hi @Empidiot, the most loss of alcohol to my humble opinion, when you are filtering a perfume, will be the alcohol the remains in the filter medium, like cotton or filter paper. I think, compared to this, the evaporation loss is marginal. However, you always can cover your funnel while filtering to minimise that loss.
