I have this same footage! I was impressed that my grandma's cousin got such good film of surfers but I now see he spliced in a professional film with his own film. Mine has a March 1928 date on it, so the professional part probably was filmed before then.
Yes that's the film, it was a travel advertisement I believe, it looks like the Duke, but then again quite a few muscular Hawaiian beach boys there, perhaps you can tell if he's there or not ?
There is a tribute to Duke at Huntington Beach in the Duke's Restaurant, a statue across the street in front of HSS and a bust with an exhibit at the International Surfing Museum a couple of block inland from there.
Thanks Roy, I think where the film fades off at 2:58, right after that the 'Duke' has a Wahine climb on his shoulders. I have seen that in other video. I like at 3:30 where there are three people on the same board before the wave leaves them behind. Also, At 3:50 where the one person steps onto the board on the right and then there are two on the same board. Then both jump off. Ah!! Those were the days.... Mahalo nui loa, Bob
Roy, thanks for posting this. Those Blake "Kook Boxes" are nifty. I recently bought a modern (hollow) wood board, and I'm inspired to shape a Alaia. I have access to some big redwood, so I'll make it out of that. It should prove to be an interesting experience.
Actually this isn't a paddleboard the Duke is riding. It's an Australian surf ski (or an early version of it). These early versions had a flat top rather than a cockpit but they were still designed to sit on but he chose to stand on it after paddling into the wave.
Hi supabunka, the soundtrack is several different tracks, not exactly sure which ones sorry, by the way fawkyou123 and jujutek I don't think the Duke was about racial hatred.

It's an old Castle films video promoting Hawaii, courtesy of Mr John Mellor
The song is Manvantara by the band Bliss.

Rare find! Unreal.

Tudo de Bom!!
Hi Rahmeish, thankyou for that insight I don't know much about Mr Freeth, time to do some research !
Senti muito emocionado ao ver este video, parabéns para quem postou.
Love the video thanks for uploading such a rare beauty, didn't like the music though some old Hawaiian tunes would have been better.
The water footage in Hawaii shown was probably taken from a canoe using a camera without a water housing.
Well spotted Khanamoku :)
Well spotted, that is in fact the person here typing on his 17 foot redwood olo. . . surfing of another Pacific Island at a later date.
Lol the last case of cannibalism reported in NZ was in 1912, we are not out of the woods yet !
haha I stumbled on this vid and its roy stewart...heh nice one. Looks pretty crowded, good for sharing waves tho i guess.
Muito legal ter imagens para sempre desde tempo, parabéns pela relíquia !

Steel drum bands are Caribbean, not Hawaiian.
While I think the footage in the video is great, I question the musical choice. It should have been Hawaiian, not techno dance.
Terrible music!
