Wow listen to her she is a good woman let us not forget that she is a great granddaughter of Leon Trotsky Definitely I mean you could trust And I’m being sarcastic by the way
A cure for addictions would be fantastic indeed! After seeing firsthand what drugs can do to my family, I am very hopeful that a vaccine of some sorts will be tested and approved. Maybe not in the near future, but sometime down the road. Thinking and creating a vaccine of this sort is a very ambitious and daunting task, but I have faith in these people! The amazing things science can do!
Addiction is not just an issue of the dopamine system. Environment, physical health, social skills, rewards and consequences, mental illness, trauma, religiosity, availability of drugs, cost of drugs, and many, many other factors contribute to the risk of addiction. If all you do is remove the cravings, you will not necessarily "fix" the addiction problem. Take your average addict and remove their cravings (which methadone and suboxone do) and you have not restored the person to health. In fact, many people relapse while on these drugs. For many people, healing from the physical consequences of addiction is just the beginning of a process of renewal and growth. While I applaud her for increasing our understanding of the neurobiology of addiction, I disagree that choices and morality play NO role in the development of addiction. Empathy for the difficulty of quitting drugs is a good thing. Denying that addicts are able to make choices is not such a good thing.
over prescribed, I had teeth pulled several times, I didn't fill the prescriptions because I knew after the first time that I wouldn't need it. just cycled Tylenol and ibuprofen and rest. I am talking about. I had this probably three times in 2016 so yeah, over prescription, and of course some people say they have problems just to get scripts.
Jesus Christ. The Orwellian piece at the end about developing a "vaccine" to block addiction was appalling. To think this was the state of addiction science back in 2012. Nuts
Among the US government, there was not a deep interest in drug addiction and proper treatment during the 80s and 90s with African Americans' usage of crack cocaine. Now, this heroin epidemic is adversely impacting the white population now its a disease whereas in the past it was a crime. Also, in America, the population that struggle with teenage drug addiction is white americans. Since this is the case, one must ask, why did they show a class of predominantly black children along with some latinos? This is framing was unnecessary but useful to perpetuate certain images in the mind of people. Maybe these broadcast are addicted to saving face for a certain people group and also addicted to producing inappropriate images of minorities in the media.
Addiction has several mechanisms involving dopamine. It will either cause and increase in the release of dopamine into the synapse or it will inhibit the re-uptake of dopamine after it has been released. Some, like methamphetamine, do both. But like she said, the body can't handle having that much dopamine activating the nervous system, so it will try to regulate what it sees as a disruption of homeostasis - it will shrink the dopamine production sites and reduce the number of receptors. That is why it takes more and more of the drug to continue getting a similar high. Other drugs will change the rate at which a nerve fires. Alcohol does this by interfering with the rate at which ionic molecules cross into and out of the axon, which makes them fire more slowly or more rapidly, depending on whether it affects the excitatory or the inhibitory process.
She's not "happy", she's incredulous. What she's saying in that moment is unbelievable even to her. Maybe you could get some education on affect regulation and gain some emotional intelligence, you sound like a 5 year old...

Opiod outbreak makes sense now
Fun fact, she's the great-granddaughter of Russian revolutionary Leo Trotsky

So sad and awful....Trotsky was a brilliant mind and my heart goes to the family that suffered from Stalin's terrorism.

supajb1 Are you from Thailand?
she should go on bill maher. that score just needs to be settled.
I thought heroin/opiates increased the number of dopamine receptors?
But she seems to be saying that the number is greatly reduced??
So which is it??
They reinforce the receptors which makes one repeat the behavior.
