I always had this obsession with world maps in games, especially pixel art games. This is really fun! EDIT: I'd love to see a world map series, tackling different terrains. I'd also love to see some of kind alien world, whatever looks cool to you :)
this really reminded me of your determination and persistence making these... i would have quit after the water tiling part. it looks so complicated so kudos to you
This would work perfectly in Godot 4.0 when the new tileset editor is released - it has the ability to select groups of tiles and place them all at once, like you were wanting. I really like that, and despite being an Aseprite nerd, may have to pick this one up as well.
Ah very cool! And yeah I'd say it's a fun pick-up, just for a different experience at least. I know Aseprite also has a tile function so I'd be curious about the comparison there also
Godot also has an awesome auto tile system. It takes a bit of setting up, but you can literally tell the engine which tiles are corners and edges and start painting - the tool will fill in all the right tiles for the shape you've painted!
@@BJGpixel This is certainly much better for world maps I'd think, aseprite has no auto tiling features (eg, you have to copy and paste each tile automatically). However, if I were to use this for game dev, I'd more likely just make tilemaps and then use the unity tile system, or game maker or whatever
I'm working like now 2 years with Pyxel Edit. I'm more into programming but of course I have to make my own assets. So after buying this program and getting into it I'm really happy with it and reaches out 100% for me as a young guy who has fun at bulding games. ;)
Oh these are always a delight to see. It's like candy for the eyes-- eye candy! And even when I'm doing something I can just listen to the process like some chill working vibes~ I've actually had a recent freelance work where I made a tileset and I just found what I'll use next for future ones! Great work s always!
Maps are definitely my favourite type of game art! I've seen a few people on UA-cam channels use Pyxel Edit for their tile workflow, seems like a really neat idea to just draw a tiles, and then immediately be able to start pasting it around!
Yeah there's some really unique things that can be done with map art! It's a lot of fun to focus on the mentality of making things repeatable and restricted to a certain unit size, rather than having the freedom of an entire undivided canvas like I normally would.
I've been using pyxel edit exclusively for pixel art for the last 6 years as all the updates have been coming through. (only one example on this new channel) I'm glad to see other people try and use it! I actually don't make tilesets all that often, but how lightweight this program is compared to having to load up photoshop is what I wanted it for. I especially like it because I like to keep copies of each stage of what I'm doing, or to make layered bases and parts. So instead of binding a tile to a tilesheet, it can be used as a very quick stamp tool and expand the canvas as needed. Quick iteration and such. The animation is very good for single object stuff, but yeah, it is tied to the per tile system, so being able to export the whole map with animations in parts is not possible. I think it's good for making tileset and testing them out, but I actually used Tiled to actually apply the map. Just needs a lasso tool and I'm golden.
That's awesome, it's so nice to know there are people out there who main Pyxel Edit! I appreciate the insight about your workflow, I often keep copies when working in Photoshop which ends up as many hidden layers and groups lol. Hope there's possibility for more animation (and lasso) feature sometime in the future!
The final design reminds me of pokemon ruby/sapphire/emerald which is my favorite Pokemon Generation especially because of the nice pixel art. Would be very glad to see a dedecated video on that.
I just dreamt about creating fictional world maps with pixel art and creating some type of story with it. Then, I found this video, this is so cool! I hope I'll get better at pixel art quicker because this is the dream! :D
Great vid as always mate! This'll be very helpful for my own game I'm working on, when I get to starting work on the world map part, to transition between individual scenes/levels
Nice work! I also have Pyxel Edit but use Aseprite more often. Before purchasing both, I came to the conclusion that Pyxel Edit excels at tile making while Aseprite is a good all-arounder, especially in animation.
Thanks! Yeah that sounds like a proper assessment; I've got Aseprite also but still need to work up my proficiency there too! Have you used the tile function much in Aseprite?
Thanks! Mostly enjoy the creative process, but I've warmed up to the idea of a larger project like that! Making vids takes a good deal of time though as is 😅
Reminds me of Advance Wars and how much I'd love to see another game like that but with a different aesthetic (I know about and really enjoy War Groove but I'm greedy and want more!)
I would love to see a pixel space map with different planets (or whatever you come up with) Which would fit the theme of some previous characters and scenarios, too.
Hey Brandon, could you do a video on how to manage layers/ when to create new layers? Also, your videos are so inspirational and helpful, so thank you!
Hi, I just found your channel. Some of your vids have actually helped to inspire me a bit, so thanks for that. I know it'd be a pretty big project, but I'd really be interested in seeing you make an original Rivals of Aether character. I adore that game, and imo, the more original characters on the Workshop, the better.
Very good video! Can you do a overworld map similar to wario land or mario land 2 for the gameboy? I would like to see you create something in 4 colors on a large scale
I'm not sure if I understand how you did the trees. Can you make a video about drawing trees and mountains in the style of Shining Force? Their overworlds look fantastic.
I can never jump in without a idea, I usually try out somethings, get frustrated and then save to finish another time, but never go back to it lol But making a tileset like this sounds fun, do you remember how long in total it took for you to draw the tiles + design the map and add the animation?
Blew my mind when you added that first tile to the tile bank, it seems like such an intuitive workflow! Real shame about the way the world tiling is handled tho, and the animations too. Though, I suppose it's not a big deal if this tool were to just be used to generate a tilesheet & another tool like one of the big game engines was used to put together the maps & animations 🤔 🤔 Or, in your case here, Photoshop for the animation 😁
It would be cool if they went the same route Aseprite did and put the whole thing up on Github so people can contribute to improving the functionality directly!
Yeah that's true, could be a useful part of a workflow like that, and it does allow you to quickly export the tilesheet as an image. I'll have to look again, but I'm not sure you can organize the tile layout of the sheet, it seemed like it was just putting them in the order they were created but maybe there's another way to organize/sort it 🤔
That'd be really cool to see! I do like the idea of a program like this that just specializes in tile workflow, and seeing a lot of extra functionality implemented would make it really powerful 😁
@@BJGpixel You can simply drag and drop the tiles to swap them. There's also the settings in the tile window to where you can say how many tiles wide the sheet as is well if you didn't see that. The downside is that it has to have a tile there before, so it's either an organization afterwards of tight fits, or just have one blank tile you can fill the sheet with and place tiles around there. I'd like to see it work like the pallet tab where you can drag and drop the colors in any open spot.
@@misninastar Oh thank you, I didn't realize how quick it was to make those swaps! (for some reason, I had been thinking it would actually swap the design in my image as well!) Yeah I could see how you'd run into issues with not having the right amount of tiles (or sheet dimensions) to have everything line up how you need
In a Q&A video he did a while back, he admitted that he uses the trackpad of his laptop to draw. Something about having gotten used to it because he moved around a lot, if I remember correctly. :)
You should do a world map for your detective character!
Ooh I like that idea! Would also be fun to make a 1-bit tileset 😁

Yes! I had one of those and I was totally thinking of it during this! 😂
My cousin had one of those and we would just put toy cars and race around the street lol
When you showed the final piece next to the first one, I literally sat up and went "whoa!" Dude, you're so talented!
I really love the subtlety of form and detail you can imply even in a small resolution.
this really reminded me of your determination and persistence making these... i would have quit after the water tiling part. it looks so complicated so kudos to you
Ah thanks so much! Sometimes the problem solving is the fun part; just gotta hold out hope that you can make it work eventually 😅
Every video you make makes me think: "I wanna play this". Great art as always.
I'd love to see a Sci-Fi RPG overworld. Maybe it's the world where all your little businesses and stuff live?
Great video :) Enjoy the "CRT Time" you add to the end of many of these. Lots of nostalgia there. Looking forward to the next one!

I love your intro... "I make things out of tiny squares" its the best intro line!!!!! its somehow funny and yet so true
