    Speaking of intermediate goals... I think this is the first video I've done where I'm ACTUALLY satisfied with the music. My strategy with videos has always been to try to improve at least one aspect by 1% every time, but the background music has always been my biggest struggle in that regard.
    In the past, I'd just pick tracks and loop them entirely in the background, hoping they'd sound good. But this time, I had a realization: music should punctuate certain points of the video in order to amplify emotion. This time around, I tried identifying some of those points, placing the music accordingly, and then cutting and mixing different loops to make everything fit. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than before.
    Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the video :)

      Hello, Thomas Frank.
      You know, it is not even, JUST about GOALS, it is about, having, a PURPOSE. What is a PURPOSE behind those goals? WHO, WHAT, and, WHY? What is it, that, MAKES THOSE GOALS VALUABLE? I worry, about discovering, WHO I AM AS A PERSON.

    0:56-Intermidiate goals are essential in building the skillset you need for the big project an
    being able to see our progress and get feedback is a good thing
    6:42-Restrict your timescale and ask yourself would you could do in a week or a day and do it. By taking a series of smaller projects which will stretch your capabilities beyond your current level

    So what you're saying is... life is like an RPG and our big grand ambition is the final boss, but in order to beat it, we need to gain enough experience from smaller bosses at the start that don't overpower us but helps us level up bit by bit until we're strong enough to conquer the final boss.

    Okay the emphasis on TINY changes is SOOOOO important. In my own personal journey / with clients I call this "evidence of evolution" - I try to identify every tiny, microscopic decision that I make differently, every situation that goes a little bit differently. I think of it like a tree - if you plant a seed and show up the next day looking for a tree, you'll always think there was no growth. The growth is underground and invisible first.

    I noticed you had some acne scarring in your old videos. I know you used to be self-conscious about it, so I'm not trying to stir up old wounds with this comment.
    I'm struggling with acne scarring myself. I'm seeing dermatologists but they said laser resurfacing wouldn't be a great option for me because of my skin tone and depth of scarring. So, what did you do to solve it?

    I'm like this with my fanfiction. I've been working on a Sherlock vampire fic for a while now, always starting, writing and then doubting myself, waiting a few weeks, starting again. In the meantime I work on other stories, short ones that aren't as 'important' and it helps cause I'm busy writing and thinking about that vamplock in the back of my mind. I have 20 chapters so far and slowly but steadily working on chapters 21 and 22. Small goals, those always seem to work for me.

    I really got a lot out of this video especially the fact that you have to be seeing regular and tangible results (even if they're small) to stay motivated and that keeping projects just out of reach is a great way to keep improving. I think a lot of times I want to make like Citizen Kane over a weekend but then the day before I realize that there's no way that's happening and so I give up. I think being realistic about where I am and making achievable goals based on that is much, much better haha.

      I completely agree. I am training for a marathon and every time I go for a run I am adding to that goal. Cheers and blessings to you!

    In language learning, there's a concept (due Krashen) called "comprehensible input" (or "i+1") where you aim to use input that stretches you just enough to improve, but not so much that you don't understand anything. You don't start German with Goethe or French with Sartre, you work with stuff that you already understand 90-95% of (depending on your tolerance for ambiguity), and then make it more difficult as you understand more.
    Likewise, sports science includes a principle called "progressive overload", which encourages adaptation that improves a skill by making it just a little bit harder than you can deal with comfortably (e.g. a weight that's not so light that you can just keep lifting and lifting without getting tired, but not so heavy that you injure yourself trying to lift it).
    And to be honest, this sort of gradual improvement is, as you say, so universal as to be the model for any sort of education or improvement. But regardless of whether you develop this way, or already are a hidden genius, it requires frequent effort in a meaningful and directed way.

  • @alejrandom6592

    I know that for me at least, perfectionism is the worst enemy. There are a lot of times I don't even start a project because I really want to do a perfect job on my first try. Therefore, I tend to only start things I know I can do very well. Which is terrible for developing new skills. Whatever you want to do, start it soon, life is short and it's better to do an okay job rather than not doing anything, besides, you can always edit that video, that book, that scuplture, and in the end it will turn out just fine ;)

    I am more inclined to do smaller goals and more of them. I think that way it gets a bit easier since it rewards with those little bits of accomplishments with each day. But becouse in my college it was mandatory to finish one big project so you couldnt just do it in a day or a week but it forced you think over your process and concentrate on a bigger picture. Although it was a struggle most of the time trying to motivate myself every, i found that it is a good idea to combine the workload with another small project, just enough that working stays fun and managable. Becouse if you overwork yourself you could hate the project again and become hesitant to try a big project again.

      I recommend the TED talk "A simple way to break a bad habit" by Judson Brewer.
      It's about awareness of the sensations and feelings that go along with an addiction. By observing those things you essentially take the "magic" out of bad habits and learn to see them for what they are.
      And in my opinion, (self-)awareness is one of the most useful skills one can develop in life in general.
      So really no risk in trying, even if it doesn't help you overcome your addiction fully. But it very well might. :-)

    What if you feel that it isn't fine to not be a genius? Lately I've been getting myself into a thought vortex that sends me looping around in bad thoughts such as 'you'll never be that good if it doesn't come naturally to you' or The Talented genius vs the hard worker loop. The hard worker can push themselves to perfectly master their craft but the talented genius will reach a point beyond perfecting the craft, they revolutionize it and add another dimension/level to it. I'm trying to get past the idea that one is better than the other, they both can work together to push the craft they both love forward. But sometimes it just sucks to not be the genius, who seems to be able to see and understand the craft in a way you can barely grasp at.

      The important thing to remember is even people who are "geniuses" need to put in a lot of work to get there. So either way the important thing is to work your ass off and do it effectively.

    • @katherinek2709
      @katherinek2709 6 років тому +1

      You should get a hold of the book "Talent is overrated" it tackles a lot of what you are talking about struggling with.

    • @McDoodle44
      @McDoodle44 6 років тому +2

      These loops of thoughts, that I know too well, are very counterproductive and get you nowhere than into feeling miserable. Stop them. Accept the reality that you're not a genius, the earlier the better, and start to make plans on how to takle your goals. So you don't have a choice, you have to put in work and time. Being a genius won't come to you by accident unless you're one of those exceptions that experience and survive a brain damage which changes their character dramatically. One in a billion. And that's a good thing because geniuses are often times lacking other (ie social) skills to a point where it makes their life unbearable.

    • @Theteenytweety

      It’s okay, I’m not a genius either! In fact, I’ve done a few IQ tests and I’m bang on average. What helps me is managing my expectations. I *know* I’m not a genius and I just resign myself to the fact that I’m going to need help and more time to grasps new concepts and skills, which is soooooo fine! Do not punish yourself for not getting it on the first go, or the second of the third, ect. A book that has helped with me with this has been Big Magic by Elizebeth Gilbert. She even goes so far as to write the genius off as self destructive and driven purely by ego, and argues that ordinary people have stroked of genius after they have been toiling away, honing their skills for some time. It’s a very whimsical read that encourages you to take the pressure off and to just try and try again.

    Great video. You should do the flip side of this situation in a future video: knowing when to stop the small projects to tackle the big, epic project. I have just realized this change over in the last year or so. I have been working as a playwright for a really long time and have a string of small (and small-scale) successes. Only recently have I realized that to move up to the next level, I need to stop dissipating my energies on small things and turn my attention to a so-called big-win. Anyway, keep up the great work.

      Good point. I had to cut the script down for time, but something that I'll mention in a future video on other goal-setting techniques is that sometimes you don't need a "detour" from the grand vision - you just need to break it down into chunks. The main idea is restricting the time scale.

    • @McDoodle44
      @McDoodle44 6 років тому

      DribbleFunk How about this ideas: If you can, then why not choosing midsized goals that are between your big goal and the current situation (in case there are any) but less challenging. They might be a help to gain more skills and confidence before taking on the big things. Basically what the video says.
      Another thought would be to make a smooth transition, cutting hours on current work and invest them into the big project. Not leaving the current situation totally too early.
      Not saying you shouldn't try, it's rather the opposite, but failing can take a toll on your time, money and self esteem and things should therefore be thought out well before and during a large project.

      I have read so broadly, including a German Literature degree, and analysed structures and styles so widely that I have seen it all. I also specialized in natural language processing for my Georgia Tech degree in CS. I occasionally skim a new author, however I continually return to Shakespeare's assertion that a writer's most difficult task is finding new ways to repeat the same story.

    This video does hit the spot for me. I find I constantly get frustrated with time management, because when you’re trying to keep three large goals going. I find it hard to keep a balance between always focusing on being productive and kicking back sometimes and making room for friends, family and social occasions. It sucks and I just get mad at myself for not doing enough.

      I totally related to this comment. The point of hustling can't just be to hustle. We hustle so that we have more time to be with friends and family. We hustle to enjoy the life more fully. We can't just hustle for the sake of hustle. that's when things become imbalanced and people become depressed because they just worked their lives away trying to find approval of themselves in their work and achievements.

    Sometimes it feels like I have so many plans and goals yet I never seem to accomplish them. They are just too far away.
    This video really reminded me on how important it is to look at your goals on a smaller scale and rather take small steps than try to make impossible leaps at once.
    Thank you sir. I will use this knowledge to my advantage in accomplishing my goals.

    Thomas I've been working on a solo show as an impressionist for what seems like forever (YEARS) ...I have had analysis paralysis so many times with this project, way too many choices on what voices to do, using video and screen behind me, choice of music, finishing a script etc its been so over whelming. I've stopped and started this so many times I've lost count. I have so many ideas but as you've stated I haven't mastered any of them yet. Any advice on where to start ?

    Quick question about Eric Barone, I wish I could ask him personally, but, was he able to put in the work *every single day*? He I want to learn more about his story, to see the ups and downs, because I think we all hit that rock bottom at some point, but then we get up again, and we fall again, rinse and repeat.

    As a musician, I had a grand plan to write, produce and record an entire album by myself with little experience. After a few days, I began to struggle and ended up stopping altogether. A few weeks later however, I set myself a goal to create a song using a pre-made beat, with very simple mixing and managed to do it. From there, I just went bigger and better, and am now at a comfortable level of competence, ready to tackle my larger goal.
    This video essentially sums up my story, and I'm very glad that everyone can understand the concept of starting slow before going big and ultimately avoid wasting a lot of time (like I did!).
    Good Job Thomas
