All in all, Andrew's finest work. Almost genius camera placement and editing. A genetic randomness that gives some people the ability to see, and know in some way, how pleasing the fire, the coming darkness, and the drone use, will be to others. Really fun to see the flora flourishing and filling in. Kudos to the owner for his foresight. Bravo.

We burned TONS of brush in our front field at the farm .. same idea as here, we added a pond, out back .. and dragged everything "tree" up front to sort for saw mill, firewood, and burn :)
A year or maybe two years later, we planted corn in the front field (Sweet Corn to sell at the roadside) ..
And every year after that for many years ... the area where the burn pile was the corn grew a FOOT Or two taller, and the ears were by far the best ones, we charge extra for them! :)

I've got one with 5800+ hours on it and the oil stays looking like honey in the engine... sure it's got its quirks but it's still a pushin' little machine. I'm not sure it won't outpush my D5K2 for like 1/6 the purchase price and I think it also has better cutting edge visibility from the operator station.

My uncle made a pond for his heat pump and for recreation. He used this stuff called bentonite. I am not sure exactly what it does, but he told me it is the best pond liner on the planet. His was mixed with red clay I believe he said at 50/50. Once he had it spread I remember him rolling it until it was hard as cement. It reminded me of a dirt race track I used to race go-carts as a kid. But he spent a nice chunk of cash to do it that way.

it's a plasticated clay most oftenused in hydraulic drilling and building casting as a slurry mix where you need to keep water and "inclusions" away from what you're working with.

Among the many things Bentonite is spread (raked) on baseball infields to dry it out after it rains to soak up excess moisture (water) to make the infield playable

    • @ronm3245
      @ronm3245 Рік тому +3

Yes, the clay of 1000 uses! Bentonite, from a geological perspective, is a type of clay from volcanic ash that has been altered by seawater. Like other clay minerals, it can absorb water within its structure, giving it desirable properties. But bentonite has particularly good absorption and swelling. Bentonite is surface mined and almost all of US production comes from Wyoming.
I learned all that in clay mineralogy class over 30 years ago, but here's what I learned today. The guy who named it (late 1800s) wanted to call it something else, but that name was already taken. So he named it after the Benton Formation, which is shale and contains such ash/clay layers. And that was named after Fort Benton, Montana. And Fort Benton was named after a politician, but who really gives a fuck about that. Fort Benton, which was originally called something else (go figure), is as far as you could go up the Missouri on a steamboat back in the 1800s.

Just a thought: build some attachment brackets for the backside of the bucket, add a couple detachable arms that extend out a couple of feet, and weld to the arms some plate steel. It will give your bucket hoses out of the fire. Since you do quite a bit of this work, it could be handy. Yup it will be heavy but you have the equipment to handle that issue.

I live in Amsterdam, NY and don't watch the news.
At first, when there was a lot of smoke and a wood burning smell, I thought that there was a major structure fire in town until my neighbor told me what it was!

The spillways have too little material in them. Putting down a single layer of slabs wont cut it. Water will undermine the stones and wash them away. Usually rip-rap works a charm.
If your berm is NOT holding the water, then it too will get washed away. You cant just build up a dam and expect it to hold water.
At 23.18 you can see the road edge collapsing into the pond. The water is shedding off the mountainside and will; wash that into the pond.
When you cut down trees on a hillside like that, there are consequences. Trees act as natural regulators for water.
The area on the slope looks good for a year, after that nature will find its own path.

The wildfire smoke was really bad this year. Having smoke like this week after week is rough and really makes you appreciate the regular fresh air we usually have
