Andrew, it's easy to make a two stick control by using a couple of small u-joints and rerouting some of the hydraulic lines. And putting the clam open and close on a foot peddle. Then the sticks act like your excavator controls.
Yup. I'd use quality parts for it tho. Rerouted controls are only as good as the feel they get and sometimes people skimp on parts aaand it absolutely sucks as a result. Steering components from the most popular (local) vehicle will work for this application on account of being quality (by way of having to be quality under law since steering components) and cheap because they're for a popular vehicle, hence common and abundant since everyone stocks said parts.
Multiple levers is no big deal at all. After just a little while it becomes second nature. Then you stop thinking about what lever to use and just do it. I say, do not convert it. If you want to change it into two cross pattern levers and one more make sure what functions you can use at the same time. Sometimes oil can flow in the wrong direction under load. A bigger problem might be the slow speed.
Well, given we are currently in a deep freeze and covered in snow here in the north east which covers Andrew’s corner of the world my guess would be this was summer ‘22.

What makes me like Andrew is the guy has numerous $50,000-$100,000 rigs but he drives a truck that’s beat up worse than my WORK truck. He’s doing exactly what us good ole boys would do if we had any money at all. Very envious of him that’s for sure. I bet it makes all those 12 hour editing sessions worth it. He’s that guy everybody out in the country talks about that drives an old beat up truck and wears overalls that has an incredible amount of money 😂

A 5 stick prentice was my most favorite machine I loaded logs with. Not everyone can do it and damn fewer can do it smooth….highest compliment I got was from a truck driver that said I was one of the ‘damn few’😂 keep at it! You will get the hang of it

Once he runs those controls for a while it’ll get a whole lot faster. He is just used to running joystick equipment. Placement of the machine for loading and unloading will make it easier also. It’s all just experience with that piece of equipment.
I ran across this video just now today and thought that I had missed it a long time ago, and this was hard for me to believe. Then as you worked with it, it appeared to be cumbersome to operate. Slow driving and confusing with the sticks operating the back boom. Then you got out and you handled the logs with the small excavator instead. What a difference.
Except knowing AC, he's had this video chillin on the SD card for 1.5 years or so, & the right time for him to edit masterfully as he does his way, & out to us 😊🤣👍

That's like a skidder and used in place of a skidder. It's used to get timber out of the brush to the landing where it's transferred to a log truck. They are designed for a 1000 foot trips. They are extremely productive

Faller bunches down the trees and piles them then this thing loads up runs it to the landing and is unloaded by the loader on the landing it's faster and the loader operator sorts the logs then loads the log trucks usually hiway trucks

Designed for short trips with BIG logs to reduce loading and unloading time I would think. Thanks for the aerial shots so nice to see all the green again.
Around here they use big tractors conected to 4 wheel drive logging trailers with a similar crane on, that way they have the power and weight of a big tractor and the speed to move the load. Valtra tractors being one of the most popular choices. Some have the crane mounted on the tractor so they can load/unload trucks so makes them dual purpose.
Love the drone shots with separate audio- adds a really cool perspective I don't see anyone else doing Have you thought of fabricating a trailer with log bunks to move logs around? That would be a very interesting welding project

I don’t blame you Andrew…. I instantly thought that thing was terribly slow. It’s probably nice when you don’t have roads and you are deep in the woods but even loading it seems slow too. But they do have their purpose when you can’t have extra equipment in the woods to load it. Good call on using the LMTV or even your haul truck.
I understand the learning curve with this one for sure. We have a grapple truck at work that I'm trying to learn on in my spare time and it's going to take a little doing haha

Glad i saw this. I was thinking of getting a used forwarder/loader but i got a log trailer with loader to attach to any fast tractor. Its a lot larger and difficult to move in tight areas but in comparison it is a lot faster at loading. If a wheel loader could pull a trailer i'd just use that.
I’d love to own an old log truck with grapple loader. There’s a ton of them around me for sale that aren’t really “road worthy” but they’d be great yard trucks around a big property like yours.

Kinda surprised you bought that JD TimberJack - usually these are the machines you use when you don't have great roads, can't get excavators in/out quickly enough but they load slower than an excavator, they drive slower than a dump truck and can't dump the load (you have to pick off the bundles) but you need them when you need them in certain situations. They are not great at any one thing, but they can do it all - just painfully slowly. They have their place I guess. Curious to see how much you use this Andrew. Especially since you have all that other equipment and have multiple excavators so they could hypothetically work on both ends (load point and unload point). Either way, have fun with it. That's what toys are for !!!! Love your videos - keep them coming !!!!

Suggestion 4 ya Andrew. Maybe make a hydraulic slid out axle rack on the back. That extends out 6 or 8 feet for those longer logs this would also help spread the load. Since the wheel base is so close together.👀 Plus a bigger radiator wouldn't hurt.🤔👍👍
Those machines are pretty awesome i've seen them on another channel. They are very slow especially on a mountain that you have. I have seen them be used in a small residential area after the trees have been cut and they have smaller logs and not working on mountains
Andrew I have been watching guys since September operate a very similar piece of equipment picking up hurricane debris, down here in Florida. It doesn't look easy. But I promise you will get faster.
Nice find Andrew. Those cranes on forwarders don't have the smooth flow rhythm that a knuckle boom crane. Where You swing with the boom and get into a rhythm. They are designed for low impact logging. Where a cutter or processor is cutting trees to saw log lengths. You might try resting Your hands on top of levers so You can move levers with Your fingers. Cutting trees to the length of the forwarder body/rack. Might help. Tree long lengths is better hauled with Your Bell haul truck which can handle the extra weight. as always enjoy Your videos!
Looks like a waste of money on this one Andrew. So sorry you and Sam didn’t work out. You’re a great guy and a very hard worker. Just need to sell some of that old equipment and get a few in better shape. Great job Andrew!
Not my favorite video…then I realize how arrogant that position is (to always expect greatness). So in retrospect, thank you for being real (not protecting idealists like me from legitimate tries that were not automatic winners) and allowing us to see that sometimes it is better to try new stuff so that ….now you know [that one] wasn’t better than the tools you already have.
If you check those fuel filters on that for water in the fuel filters.& Then add in some of that sta bil fuel treatment stabilizer for diesel engines you might be surprised after running it for A little while. I'd work on fixing that over heating issues first thing though before trying that also Andrew. It has fuel injector cleaner in it to along with it blocks out.& Controls the moisture from getting inside of your fuel tanks from the outside air pressure.& Temperatures to like in the extremely cold weather to.
Never watched this channel before, but it seems you have a pretty nice piece of equipment, just need to get a hydraulic controller that works for you. It's just hoses and handles. Change it up to little toggle buttons where they feel comfortable. Small price in the big picture maybe? That thing will still be running, when the $500K machines have broke down. Point is, keep that machine. Slow and steady never killed anyone.
I drive forwarders (mainly John Deere nowdays) for a living and must say that technology has advanced looong ways since these things were brand spanking new.😀
@@Bulldog532 An extended log bunk does not make it a forwarder, I ran one of these back in the mid 80s early 90s as well as Franklin, Iron Mule and Timberjack.
Had a weird~ish dream the other day about you, without any details I will tell you how I stopped drinking. I fixed a drink, took a sip and realized I wasn't thirsty. The next time I touched the glass the ice had melted. Being all watered down, I poured it out. I had found plenty to do in the time it took that ice to melt. It is up to each person to decide when they want to set that glass down. I have a few friends who will let it kill them before they do and others who just don't want to find something else to do. the sky is still there, with or without it. I don't know if that is the answer you wanted but it is the best I have for you.
I own one of these and its made by a different company, name is worn off but think it was a Kobelco... sounds like that name any how. It was made to go out in the woods and load logs to keep them out of the mud and rocks. It will travel over some terrain that is just unbelievable and still just come right out of bad ground. The biggest advantage of mine is it has the same controls as a excavator and so its not just one function on each lever. You have ran enough excavators to know what a advantage that is when you just plant your two hands on two levers or one in each hand. I did shorten the log stakes as its just way too top heavy and wants to roll a lot when on steep sidehills. I can still load just as fast if not faster than you can if they are regular logs an not bits and pieces of firewood. Like I said, if used in the brush where the tree fell at, then no rocks or mud to get into the chain or sawblade.
Andrew ive got a similar one of those and all i use it for is trimming the trails and removing logs from the trail, for a comerical application its not good enough in my opinion, one thing i would do is trim the logs to the length of the truck, over hangs cause imbalance and extra pressure on the back end, if it had a third axle on it id use it more for more of a comercial use, but i have larger machines for that now.
My Terramite backhoe/loader has the old school six stick config for the backhoe controls like that skidded. It does take some getting used to. I thought about changing it out to dual wobble sticks, but now I don't even look at the sticks when using it.

I'm guessing the slow speed is just too keep you from ripping through the woods too fast. Need that tire aired up before it tears off the rim and gets damaged. Interesting video.
Only way to know is to check the pressure - some of those tires are designed to run pretty darn soft so they grip better - not sure on this specific equipment (or the tire rating) - but I saw that too - but just thought maybe it's supposed to be that soft.

Kinda surprised you bought that JD TimberJack - usually these are the machines you use when you don't have great roads, can't get excavators in/out quickly enough but they load slower than an excavator, they drive slower than a dump truck and can't dump the load (you have to pick off the bundles) but you need them when you need them in certain situations. They are not great at any one thing, but they can do it all - just painfully slowly. They have their place I guess. Curious to see how much you use this Andrew. Especially since you have all that other equipment and have multiple excavators so they could hypothetically work on both ends (load point and unload point). Either way, have fun with it. That's what toys are for !!!! Love your videos - keep them coming !!!!

@@iffykidmn8170 This unit is actually a Timberjack/John Deere C50 ..... the green paint/yellow stripe, Deere logo and C50 designation indicate that quite clearly. Either way - It's really not important to the point I made anyways.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Suggestion 4 ya Andrew. Maybe make a hydraulic slid out axle rack on the back. That extends out 6 or 8 feet for those longer logs this would also help spread the load. Since the wheel base is so close together.👀 Plus a bigger radiator wouldn't hurt.🤔👍👍

Those machines are pretty awesome i've seen them on another channel. They are very slow especially on a mountain that you have. I have seen them be used in a small residential area after the trees have been cut and they have smaller logs and not working on mountains
Good Engine in there.... been around a long time. All that gravel on the roads is Lookin Good!!
With the skidder and forwarder, all you need now is a logging truck and you've got a hobby logging company. 👍

Andrew I have been watching guys since September operate a very similar piece of equipment picking up hurricane debris, down here in Florida. It doesn't look easy. But I promise you will get faster.

Boy Andrew, that’s a great piece of equipment! Always before, you would buy a heavy duty truck and install a boom on it.
That's a piece of home made junk. Not fit for purpose. Propwr timber cranes are so fast they would make the excavator look slow.
You must be used to some pretty awful machinery if you think this POS is great.
Nice find Andrew. Those cranes on forwarders don't have the smooth flow rhythm that a knuckle boom crane. Where You swing with the boom and get into a rhythm. They are designed for low impact logging. Where a cutter or processor is cutting trees to saw log lengths. You might try resting Your hands on top of levers so You can move levers with Your fingers. Cutting trees to the length of the forwarder body/rack. Might help. Tree long lengths is better hauled with Your Bell haul truck which can handle the extra weight. as always enjoy Your videos!

Not my favorite video…then I realize how arrogant that position is (to always expect greatness). So in retrospect, thank you for being real (not protecting idealists like me from legitimate tries that were not automatic winners) and allowing us to see that sometimes it is better to try new stuff so that ….now you know [that one] wasn’t better than the tools you already have.

You'll love this machine Andrew once you get used to those 5 operating levers.
If you check those fuel filters on that for water in the fuel filters.& Then add in some of that sta bil fuel treatment stabilizer for diesel engines you might be surprised after running it for A little while. I'd work on fixing that over heating issues first thing though before trying that also Andrew. It has fuel injector cleaner in it to along with it blocks out.& Controls the moisture from getting inside of your fuel tanks from the outside air pressure.& Temperatures to like in the extremely cold weather to.
Never watched this channel before, but it seems you have a pretty nice piece of equipment, just need to get a hydraulic controller that works for you. It's just hoses and handles. Change it up to little toggle buttons where they feel comfortable. Small price in the big picture maybe? That thing will still be running, when the $500K machines have broke down. Point is, keep that machine. Slow and steady never killed anyone.
I drive forwarders (mainly John Deere nowdays) for a living and must say that technology has advanced looong ways since these things were brand spanking new.😀

@@Bulldog532 An extended log bunk does not make it a forwarder, I ran one of these back in the mid 80s early 90s as well as Franklin, Iron Mule and Timberjack.

Had a weird~ish dream the other day about you, without any details I will tell you how I stopped drinking. I fixed a drink, took a sip and realized I wasn't thirsty. The next time I touched the glass the ice had melted. Being all watered down, I poured it out. I had found plenty to do in the time it took that ice to melt. It is up to each person to decide when they want to set that glass down. I have a few friends who will let it kill them before they do and others who just don't want to find something else to do. the sky is still there, with or without it. I don't know if that is the answer you wanted but it is the best I have for you.
I own one of these and its made by a different company, name is worn off but think it was a Kobelco... sounds like that name any how. It was made to go out in the woods and load logs to keep them out of the mud and rocks. It will travel over some terrain that is just unbelievable and still just come right out of bad ground. The biggest advantage of mine is it has the same controls as a excavator and so its not just one function on each lever. You have ran enough excavators to know what a advantage that is when you just plant your two hands on two levers or one in each hand. I did shorten the log stakes as its just way too top heavy and wants to roll a lot when on steep sidehills. I can still load just as fast if not faster than you can if they are regular logs an not bits and pieces of firewood. Like I said, if used in the brush where the tree fell at, then no rocks or mud to get into the chain or sawblade.
Definitely need some dog go-pros. We need to see what these pups are doing when they wonder off into the lands
Andrew ive got a similar one of those and all i use it for is trimming the trails and removing logs from the trail, for a comerical application its not good enough in my opinion, one thing i would do is trim the logs to the length of the truck, over hangs cause imbalance and extra pressure on the back end, if it had a third axle on it id use it more for more of a comercial use, but i have larger machines for that now.
My Terramite backhoe/loader has the old school six stick config for the backhoe controls like that skidded. It does take some getting used to. I thought about changing it out to dual wobble sticks, but now I don't even look at the sticks when using it.

I'm guessing the slow speed is just too keep you from ripping through the woods too fast. Need that tire aired up before it tears off the rim and gets damaged. Interesting video.
Only way to know is to check the pressure - some of those tires are designed to run pretty darn soft so they grip better - not sure on this specific equipment (or the tire rating) - but I saw that too - but just thought maybe it's supposed to be that soft.
