With many Iron Maiden songs you get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier in the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during this battle on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of over a hundred British soldiers. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem to commemorate this disaster and he called it "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
The bronze that the recaptured guns were made from was used to make the Victoria Cross, a military medal of the very highest order that was awarded "for valour". Very few of these have ever been awarded, even to this day.

I've been a Maiden fan since hearing their debut album on cassette in 1980 when I was 10 years old. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground and mine too, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!

In addition to their great musicianship and songcraft, Maiden made it cool for metal bands to have thoughtful, intelligent lyrics. Love these guys!
Both guitarists each play a solo back to back in this song which is very common in their songs. The front man, Bruce Dickinson is incredible in his range and just his overall craftsmanship as a singer.

I am a guitarist. I'll break it down on a few things that I think most non-guitarists might miss. The guitars are employing a "galloping" rhythm to imitate the horses on the battlefield. You'll also realise that during the second part of the solo (@10:52) you can hear the almost "haphazard" playing going everywhere which may also imitate the soldiers on the battlefield ducking and diving whilst firing their muskets on horseback.
Maiden is still going today, still touring, released a new album a couple of years ago. Maiden are unique with their style and story telling, their live performances are on another level and the fans at their shows span generations, young and old and families. So just as popular today, if not more so.

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Iron Maiden write songs that sometimes run very, very long. Including up to 14 minutes long. So they may have fewer songs on the album but there will be some epic songs as well. Hallowed Be Thy Name and Rime of the Ancient Mariner are good examples of long songs but amazing. Chris
The reason for 9 songs back on old albums is because of vinyl records and cassettes being limited on space for information to be written. When CDs first came out, Megadeth was in the studio making Countdown to Extinction and had to add another track so we got the filler track “Foreclosure of a Dream”.
It was the calvary charging being out numbered and slaughtered charging the Russian front line.

No CDs back in '83...vinyl can only hold so much per side before the sound suffers. Maiden made longer albums than average back then.

They charging against heavy infantry, so the Bursts would of been canon fire.
There are LP's with one track per side, look in to the prog rock arena. The charge is against an Artillery line of Russian cannons. They ride directly to the line. No infantry troops to back them up.
Cannon fire bursts. Only 126 of the 600 + troopers survived .

The battle of Balaclava 1854 during the Crimean War, it is the story of the doomed charge of the light brigade on the British side due to bad intel, they decided to charge anyway doing as much damage to the Russian front as possible before inevitable defeat.
